I think that both games has merits and they are quite different, in gameplay and in tone. I am one of the few who didn't care much for ME 1 or 2, so my choice is quite obvious: Skyrim.

If it follows late TES trends, you will get a lot of replay value out of it, and the game looks gorgeous. Skyrim is also located in an area that's much more interesting than Oblivion's (but still not as good as Morrowind's Vvardenfell), which is a subtle detail that I'm sure will make a lot of difference in the game.

Make up your mind based on your personal tastes and previous experiences with the franchises, not our biased advice =)

It really should come down to which series you prefer most. If you like both equally (as I myself do) then go with Skyrim, only because it comes out first and will have more hours of content than Mass Effect 3.

Also, are you sure you can't afford both? I don't exactly have a large income myself, but I have some money set aside specifically to ensure I can get these two games as they are released.

Can't you get both? I might be wrong but ME3 isn't out until the second quarter of next year, yes? You have time to save up money after buying Skyrim to be able to afford ME3.

I miss the option 'both when finances are sufficient'

I'm a Elderscrolls Fanbooiiiiiiiii (mark down the extra i's for more lulz) so the answer is clear to me.
I enjoyed the ME games, but they don't pull me in as much as the Elderscrolls do. (at least the characters look STRAIGHT AT ME IN THE EYE ALL THE TIME /sarcasm)

Okay in all seriousness. Which game you choose is trivial. With both you will have an experience that will last. Will it be ME's roleplay aspect along with fast paced frantic space action, or the rustic scenery with the occasional Dragon decapitation.

I'd say elderscrolls, because... well I am kind of a fanboy, come to think of it..

You'll probably be bored by Skyrim after somewhere beyond 50 hours, but you'll probably start to get bored by Mass Effect 3's monotonous shooting before it picks up in a super-gripping finale after which you're the greatest fan again for two days, but then won't think about it anymore. Be that as it may, it seems like Skyrim is providing the best value for its price. But in the end, no-one can really say for certain (and you may regret either decision at some point). But doesn't Skyrim come much earlier? If you pre-order Mass Effect 3, you can probably get Skyrim at a discount in the interim, but you have to wait longer. Ah, I don't care.

Agreed. ME3 shouldn't make its appearance before March 2012. That being said, I love both games, both franchises, but I'd still rank Skyrim just a bit above ME3. If only because you shouldn't be able to kill someone with an "omniblade"...

Seeing as Skyrim is the one that is less likely to require Origin, I'd recommend it. Still, if there is a way to block off Origin's access to the files on your computer, then I couldn't say either way.

If you MUST get only ONE as a new game, ME3. Because Skyrim will undoubtedly be greatly improved by mods, and you'll want to avoid ME3 spoilers.
What if he has a ps3 or 360? You can't get skrym mods on those can you?

Oof. Well then, he should save up for a PC, so he can mod his Elder Scrolls like a civilized human being!

As much as I'm looking forward to both games, I'm voting Mass Effect 3 on this. I loved Oblivion, I think I've put something like 130 hours into my main character on it, but what takes Oblivion from a good game to a fantastic game for me is the mods. I can't imagine playing it without some of the quest and companion mods and that's largely the reason I'd say to get Mass Effect 3 instead of Skyrim: by getting Mass Effect 3 first and waiting a while before getting Skyrim you give the modding community time to work its magic.

Edit: Of course, if you have a console instead of a PC then sorry, I don't know.

Depends on what you're after, Sci-fi or fantasy. Personally I'd get skyrim because I know more about it and I've always found the elder scrolls world's very immersive.
