Carpenter ants are cool... they make really intricate tunnel networks out of stumps in the woods around my house... never really come near the house itself though, since it's got a mostly solid concrete exterior for the first few feet, and above that it's mostly vinyl and steel. Most other ants, I'm not really fond of.

Termites... well, I've never seen the construction worker ones, but I've seen the other kind turn a wood pile almost to powder over the course of a few years.

So I guess ants.

Wood-eating termites get a bad rap. At least they're proactive. Ants just stumble around and eat leaves and crumbs and stuff. They'll never take more from a human than a single sandwich in one go, and that's only if you're dealing with some really hardcore ants. Termites, on the other hand, take a look at a permanent structure built by the dominant species of the planet, and think to themselves, "Yes. That shall do for lunch."

Seriously, go termites.
But you see here in Aus we have Ants that grow up to 4 cm and can kill people while the termites just make obnoxious marks on the landscape from their spit. Ants are so much cooler :p

I going with ants but only because I have less encounter with Termites. Before you asked I have little problem with ants well except for one or two times but overall I think they're fine.

Lets just say that if there was no ants there would be no nature. They keep it in balance. Users who at least heard of Darwin's theory of evolution will know what I meant.

A Hermit's Cave
Ants... formicidae all the way! =P

But seriously, I've studied ants and want to study them again, 'cos their cool for the little critters that they are... though it is disconcerting to other people when you admonish an ant by saying 'silly girl' when it's not behaving... always referred to as 'she'... bugs a lot of people, that...

I don't like either, but I prefer not to kill them, mainly because I don't want to get too close.

Well, ants tend to taste almost sweet once you get past the bitter exoskeleton. The two flavors come together to make a unique and pleasant dining experience.

Termites, on the other hand, take almost smoky, like casket-aged bourbon. It can be okay with the right drink handy (Like casket-aged bourbon) but in the end, I'll have to go with the snacking potential of ants.

Was that the question?

I have to say ants because whenever I think of termites, I remember the termite war scene from the movie "Antz." It scared the piss out of me as a kid and I didn't watch the movie again for years because of it. On a less traumatic note I also enjoyed "A Bugs Life" as a kid, so ants get more points in my book.

Ants, because there are no termites in these parts of the world. Termites only bring to mind the damage they cause, to wood and to the ozone layer.
