I picked Wii U, for all the obvious/aforementioned reasons, but ultimately the answer is all of them. Every single games system has had a stupid or goofy name. Names for electronics goods (or cars, or shavers, or anything... ) tend to be awful and/or pointless, so they're just doing what's natural, so to speak.

If I'm someone who doesn't know shit about games, It takes some research to find out that the Xbox One is the third damn console
"Research"? It takes less than 2seconds to Google 'Xbox One'... The first entry is the official site - with a big picture, a price, and an overview of its console-y console features. The second result's the Xbox One store of a major highstreet site.

And the third's Wikipedia, where this is the first sentence: "The Xbox One is a home video game console developed by Microsoft. Announced in May 2013, it is the successor to the Xbox 360 and the third console in the Xbox family...".

Two seconds and a click = "research" in the always online space-year 2017? C'mon... Personally I think sequalising a games console is heartily derpsome (doesn't that make the PS4 Pro the PS4.5?), but as I said at the start, all console names are terrible, just in different ways.

Xbox 360 and Xbone. Just... why the 360 part? Why the One part? I don't really get it. Yeah, the name Wii U is silly. But goddamnit so is the 360 part!

I picked Wii U for obvious reasons, but I had an old Turbografx 16 at one point and that name is patently ridiculous.

The Wii U. While I thought the original Wii's name was kind of dumb I could at least find some humor in the play on words. Can't really do so with the Wii U.

Also the Xbox One as a secondary choice because that is also fairly dumb.

Because the Xbox 2 was competing with the Playstation 3, and they wanted to have a 3 in the name to make it sound on the same level as the competitor's Playstation 3.

In a universe where the Pippin (Does it have magic to do? Just for you?), the Ouya (Did Peggy Hill name it?), and the Channel F (sounds like a cable porn network) existed, you have some pretty weak choices in the poll.

It was 360 because the Xbox had come full circle I believe was the explanation at the time.

I voted for Wii U because that's an objectively ridiculous name, but I remember thinking that the "PlayStation" sounded like one of those cheap Playskool activity centers you buy for toddlers. Compared to the more sharp and edgy names Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo, how could a PlayStation be an upgrade?
Because it's PlayStation. Plaaaaaaaaaystaaaaatiooooon. I remember finding the name PlayStation very odd when first hearing it at the age 6 in late 1995. I don't know what it was, but when we got one during Christmas of 97, the name stuck with me, and my older brother loved the name instantaneously. I think the reason why it worked was due to a lot of games being stationed to the console. Ha. Ha. Ha. And then PS2 happened, so we all know the rest from there.

Ironically the XBOX ONE came full circle in the worst possible way. Similar to its original predecessor, the console lacks variety, with a whole bunch of shooters galore, and multi-platform games you can get on a better console or PC. It's almost like XBOX all over again, but even less tolerable. With cancellation of Scalebound, there is now no reason for me to get it, because Microsoft was too chicken shit to release a game that wasn't supposed to be multiplayer focused.

I feel no sympathy for Microsoft, that's their own damn fault.

Wii U and Xbox One are tied. Wii and Xbox 360 are also tied for second worst.

Here's my reasons.

Wii U - A contradictory name, if Wii was supposed to mean "We" then "We You" is contradictory. They just wanted to reuse the Wii name and this is the best they could come up with.

Xbox One - There was already an Xbox 1, we just call it the original Xbox since it would be confusing to call it the Xbox 1.

Wii - We are not in Japan, using Japanese titles for games is a pet peeve of mine and it extends to console names too, localize your damn title. While we are on the subject, I have noticed that sometimes Japanese developers don't localize the voice acting and we are stuck with only Japanese voice acting (Tales of Hearts R comes to mind). Either fully localize your damn game, cut out the part you don't want to localize or don't release it here, lazy fucks.

Xbox 360 - It seems perfectly natural now to say Xbox 360 instead of Xbox 2 but what does the 360 really mean in terms Microsofts usage here? Seems nonsensical to me.

Some of the best console names are: Playstation, it perfectly says what it is. Dreamcast, it just stirs the imagination. I am also fond of Gamecube as it describes the look and purpose of the machine.

I remember hearing that they were going to just call it Xbox 2 but seeing as it's direct competitor was the PS3 they decided that to Joe Public PS3 would sound more advanced than Xbox 2. They couldn't call it Xbox 3 as it was the 2nd console(something that didn't seem to occur to them when they were naming the 3rd console) so went with 360 instead. Don't know how much truth there is in that but it makes some sense
Yes, it made some sense right up until they named their third console Xbox One, proving they were just confused both then and now. So now they have Xbox 1 competing against the PlayStation 4.

At least more clever than "Xbox 360", which is what I voted. I get the "Xbox" part because of Microsoft's own DirectX, and that "box" is considered slang for a piece of hardware, but what the hell were they thinking with "360"? I mean, it could be anything...I guess the disc in the tray spins 360, the...I just don't know. If they're going for an all-encompassing solution then no, it was nowhere near what you get with a PC. Hell, even the PS3 had that covered far more effectively, especially when it still had Linux support. Plus, all it did was lead to stupid speculation on what the next one would be called. 720 you say? No....
I always thought the 360 came from the marketing gimmick of the console being a 'revolution'.

not really. sounds like one of those kiddy play pen things if you analyse the name.
It's the opposite of a "workstation", which Sony also made prior (PC's).
