It's got to be poor stories for me. I've jumped head first into the Bioware bandwagon, though Dragon Age 2 threw me through a loop, and those games would be nothing without their stories. My favorite game of all time is Final Fantasy Tactics, because the story is insane, even though the graphics are from the 90s, the controls can be odd, fights can last for 30 minutes or longer, and there are translation errors and other glitches. The story makes it worth it though.

I suppose my favorite game at this point is Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance... so I voted clunky controls. If you removed the zoom function, command/build queues, multiple-function patrols, et cetera... the game would be terrible.

This. This. This.
The User interface and controls are what made Forged Alliance an awesome game.
We should have a game of FA sometime.

There are many ways to screw up a good game. Add some bugs. Make the control scheme stupid. Blanka. Most of my favorite games are heavily story driven though, so I went with Story Sucking in the poll.

my favorite game? well if the story was blown to hell, then the movement/rearranging of pixels on the screen would be..nothing. not a single meaning to me beyond that.

Well if someone took Baldur's Gate then put in random battles, hordes of unchallenging minions that constantly respawn, turned the combat into button mashing and recycled all explorable areas... I'd be pissed to no end.

What? Only a few people for unfair combat?

If I'm getting my ass kicked because the difficulty curve has an overhang, then something has gone wrong. Or if I'm trying to sneak past enemies and they see through damn walls, draw a bead on and decapitate you in on fell swoop.

When I played CoD: MW2, n00b tubers ruined it for me.

But in single player town, a place I've been spending a lot of my time in, it would have to be clunky controls. I didn't play ME1 for a year and a half after getting it because of that. Then ME 2 was available for $20 so I beat it, and now it's one of my favorite games. Playing through for my 7th time.

If Eternal Darkness and Silent Hill 2 had a horrible story, there would be little reason to enjoy them both.

Definitely controls. How can you even begin to enjoy a game when you can't play it?

Captcha: deep thought.

Oh man I love Hitchhiker's Guide.

My favorite games is Metro 2033, and since it actually does have clunky controls, unfair combat, and can look pretty unspectacular at times, the only thing that brings me back is the amazing story and atmosphere.

Strategy games and games in general don't need a story or fancy gfx. Controls don't really matter much (especially if turn-based) and the AI has to be unfair and cheat alot to compete against a smart human player.

That leaves repetition.

I have a question.

How can it be my favorite game if it has a glaring flaw in it that would make it unplayable? I already have trouble determining favorites and you're asking me to choose something that would automatically invalidate it in the first place.

Well, a game like Just Cause 2 (no my favorite, but it is a good example) has a ridiculous story to begin with, but it's still huge fun to play. This is why I say: controls mean more to me then everything else. I played the original Half-Life, and I still love it. GTA Vice city is still huge fun. My favorite game at the moment still is GTA IV, which gets everything right, at least on the PC.

Clunkly controls is generally an answer that would work for every game. If the game doesn't do what it should, it will never be all that playable. Take Okami Wii for example, that game is horribly broken and unplayable because of its piss poor controls.

My favorite game is Bully. Without the characters and story, it'd be unplayable.
