This is a question I have often wondered about, but have never come to an answer to. I ask this to my friends, but they either answer too quickly and give it no thought, or are unable to choose.
Imagine This: You have just committed a crime and are taken to jail. The judge gives you a choice of which punishment you would want (Not sure how often that actually happens). You are given two choices:
1) Go to jail on a life sentence, with no chance of parole. (It is also impossible to escape.)
2) Go to death row and be executed.
Which option would you choose, and why?

I'd go for the life-sentence. A chance to write a book, develop my spiritual side, help my fellow inmates, and possibly work to make amends. If I wanted to die, I would prefer to off myself rather than force another human to take my life.

Life Sentence, you never know what will happen in life, but if you let it stop, you're doomed anyway. Do it for the sake of living, even in a cage.

Depends what kind of prison it is. I think I'd rather live though, and read books or something. Hell, if I have really good behavior and I'm in a slightly more relaxes prison they might even let me have an xbox or something in my cell.

Death row, but I live in Canada so I guess I'm f**ked if I ever kill someone.

Well, if you think about it, whatever you did to get on death row would have to be pretty horrible and when you die, chances are you'd burn in hell. So I'd much rather spend my life in prison after I think about it. At least then I could be forgiven.

Insert angry Atheism here. But seriously, if you leave religion out of it death row is much better (i.e. no gang rape, torture, boredom etc)

As demoralising as living without freedom would be, I'd still rather be living, in spite of the inevitable beatings and violent rapes.

Death. I just couldn't take the lack of freedom. I'd go insane long before my natural death in a life sentence.

Death is permanent. Life Sentence, there's still a chance, albeit slim, that you can get out.
There is absolutely no chance for freedom. No parole. No Michael Schofield breakouts.

Depends: If I got to stay in the UK I'd take life since you get free games and all.
If not, then death if I really did do it. Quick and painless I guess, I don't want to rot away slowly.

What's the difference? People can spend years on death row actually waiting for their execution, and more often than not the quality of life is far worse than than normal prisons. My sister has a pen friend on death row, and he's been there for over 7 years now.

Keeping that in mind, I suppose life sentence, because if I ever really want to die I still have the option.

If I correctly recall, the life expectancy is higher in death row than in quite a few New York and LA ghettos.

Life Sentence.... People can be released from life or intervening actions can occur..... I've yet to see someone released after having a lethal injection work.

Well seeing as typically inmates on Death Row are there for about 20 years, I'd go with Death Row and just keep appealing everything.

Chekov wrote a story about this once. It was about a man who took a bet for a substantial sum of money that he could last ten (or was it fifteen) years in solitary confinement. He was expected to have gone mad but instead he wrote that he had learned a ton from reading and writing. He would up leaving the confinement before the bet was up because he didn't want the money.

And that's why I'd choose the life sentence. I'd spend the time reading and writing, hopefully becoming a better person through it.
