This stems from extra credits' sexual diversity discussion and the following comments made me wonder: you put in a brand new game and up pops the character select screen. Which would you really choose?

I would choose to create this topic in the "Gaming Discussion" forum.

OT: I usually choose male, at least on the first playthrough. I only don't if I know that the female voice acting is much better. (IE: Mass Effect).

Really?

I like playing as a woman, just because games in general are dominated by men.

Female Dwarf in Dragon Age, female in Saint's Row 2, girl in Pokemon.

Regretfully a man in Mass Effect 2, because the 100% complete Mass Effect 1 save file was on my male character.

Male, I like to play through at least once as close to myself as possible.

I usually play as male in games such as saints row 2 but in games like fable 2/3 and dragon age origins, I play as female, I'm not really sure why...

Male, first play through. I want to be able to relate to my avatar.
And seeing as I am a white male, I will naturally first go for a white male.

Doesn't mean I am UNABLE to relate to anything else. I think my favourite playthrough on Dragon Age was the one with the human female.
But that was mostly because of the romance with Alistair, I think. I am so gay for that guy. It is not even funny.

I usually play the games trough as a male first so I can relate. Then on my second playtrough tend to be an evil (If alignement choices are available) female. It mostly depends on the game tho!

Generally a woman. Depends for different games, but usually because a) if I'm going to be playing as an adventurer/gangster/space marine/ etc. and staring at their backside for the entirety of the game, I'd rather have it be a backside I wouldn't mind staring at.

It also comes down to different factors. For instance, in Mass Effect, I found Jennifer Hale's voice work to be an incredibly strong performance, especially in comparison to whoever does male Shephard (he still did a good job, Hale's was just THAT great).

I'm not entirely certain I understand the question. Do you mean which gender do I prefer to play? If so, female. The males generally look so overly masculine and douchey that I just really don't want to be them. Although I usually do a second playthrough as male for the other dialogue/romance options.

However, I originally read your question to mean: what sexual orientation would you choose for your character? If so, bi- or homosexual; regardless of whether I'm playing male or female. If at all possible, a kind of grey area (e.g. romancing Naoto Shirogane in P4). There's enough hetero-ness in most games. A little variety's nice, you know?

Male, cause last I checked, I do have something between my legs, and I like the character representing me to have it too.

Female. I like everything about being female, in all my realities.

if you can't customise them (like in Pokémon), which ever one looks cooler. Otherwise it's usually a man, since they get better clothing options, like in Saints Row and Fable.

I normally choose Male characters. For some reason before I tried a female character in ME1, I was very much against doing playthroughs with characters other than human males. Not too sure why. I'm fine with it now *shrugs*

Male. As I am. I can't really relate to playing a female character.
