This is a bad survey. You would have to compare how many people bought each version of the x-box to make sense of how many times each version of the x-box failed.
No problems, the problem with your study it is HEAVILY skewed. A: a greater proportion of RROD will tick the boxes B: People with the arcade generally use it the least, Elites come second and premium are the most heavily used, that's a huge factor. It's not what the system costs, but how badly it's treated, how heavily it's used and luck also comes into play.
Sorry, but unless you do another poll on who owns what machine, then you have a big problem with this poll - if, say, 30 'Pists have premiums, and half die, and 10 'Pists have Elites, and half of those die, then the probability of failure is still the same, it is just that more people on the Escapist own a premium.
Baneat also makes good points - 'hardcore' gamers may be more likely to own a premium or elite, and will therefore play it much more than someone with a basic core 360, meaning you will, again, have useless results.
The best way to do this would have been either using a website designed for surveys, or having a template in the original posts asking multiple questions.

That isn't what he was saying at all - he said that people who buy premiums are usually more 'hardcore' gamers than those who buy core machines. This means that a premium may be more likely to fail, as a hardcore gamer with a premium may use it far more than a casual gamer with a core machine.MrGFunk said:

Not having a 360 myself and only knowing one guy who does, this is a bit of a shock to me.
This is in no way an attack on the 360, but damn!? Is it only me that finds the rate of RRoD insane. Even allowing for the statistic uselessness of the survey it really seems this happens alot. I had no idea it was this common. I actually thought people exaggerated and joked about it mostly. You know, like the BSoD and Windows in general.
Or am I getting the wrong impression?

Here's the problem with your methodology. Each console type has come with various different chipsets, and were manufactured in differing quantities. The other problem is that the reason for failure is already known, and a poll on a forum isn't going to narrow it down any further.
At release, there were only the Core and Premium units. Premium units were manufactured and sold in incredibly higher numbers than the Core versions. These versions of the Xbox had high failure rates.
Then the Elite was introduced. The Elite was manufactured on a different chipset (Zephyr - which also included HDMI). Core and Premium were also renamed to Arcade and Pro. The new chipset was then rolled over to include the Arcade and Pro retail units over time, though the only way to tell is to look at the box to see if HDMI is listed as a feature.
Another revision was then rolled out - Falcon. It doesn't really add new features though, so it's somewhat difficult to tell whether or not a system has it other than looking at the manufacture date.
There is also another new chipset revision rolling out right now (Jasper), most easily noticeable on the Arcade units that include built-in memory instead of a memory card. These are likely to be even more reliable.
Anyone that has the original, non-HDMI units has approximately a 30% chance of having the console die within 3 years. Any of the revisions after that should be significantly more reliable - the newest ones (made since September 2007) shouldn't really have any more problems than any other piece of electronics.

A few people I know that have had their "pros" red ring they all had them standing up not laying down in a open area. so maybe they had it in a confined space where air couldn't get to it there for Red ring.
