Of the two choices I prefer Matt Smith. He seems a bit more alien, which to me makes sense considering.

But of the new doctors I think that the best so far has been Eccleston, he just seemed so right. Every time he pulled that happy/surprised sort of face he did it just screamed doctor at me

Matt smith, hands down no contest- Tennant could not be believable threatening, which the Doctor needs ot be able to do, he also had the misfortune for having that hack davies as his writer- the pseudo messiah stuff got really old.

EDIT= And another thing, Tennant was far too human for the role- the Doctor is supposed to be a little bit off kilter and edgy, Tennant was too much of a pretty boy.

Christopher Eccleston.

I want a more serious, dark doctor. I know its meant to be a fun show, but the sinister is just more entertaining to me.
In the classic series it was always really dark- kids like me just saw the aliens and the badass hero, rewatching them recently I was shocked at how much Id missed.

Yet another reason to downrate Tennant.

I quite enjoy both actors in their portrayal of the Doctor, though at present I admit I am liking Matt Smith even more than I liked Tennant. He strikes a very enjoyable balance between the "enraged demigod" and "whimsical explorer" aspects of the Doctor's personality.

For a lot of people, Tennant was their first Doctor. He stayed for 4 years and was more or less perfect in the role.

My first Doctor was Eccleston thought. He'll always be my Doctor.

I like to belive the only reason Eccleston was one of the bad guys in the G.I. Joe was because he only got one season of Doctor Who and he wanted revenge. He had better storylines which had likeable characters, and he was a good doctor to boot. David was also good. He acted well, and was belivable enough. I despise Matt smith though, he just seems too crazy. I think I gave up hope for his character in the second episode, when he couldn't work out something the secondry character could. Granted, Amy knew more but I don't watch the show for the companion to overrule the doctor.

Overall, Eccleston didn't get enough time to shine, Tennant had too much and I dislike Matt Smith. But the best character had to be the Master. Just saying...

david tennant and matt smith have quite similar styles of eccentricity, but in different ways (if that makes no sense to you, its like watching a similar character, but is done differently and reacts differently. or something.)
i like matt smith, his series have had really good episodes and twists.
but
and he went on QI and talked about magic mushrooms and other drugs for about 5 minutes.

I didnt mind tennant, but I could never really take him seriously, especially when he would go into his "serious" moments....se him as barty crouch jr in Harry potter? I expected him to do the tounge flick thing have the time....
"Actually, before you kill me, there's something you should know. I'm not a dark wizard at all. I'm actually a Time Lord."

I enjoyed Tennant, but Smith seems a little more erratic to me, which is kind of what I expect from the Doctor. Still trying to catch up on my classic series, though, so who (or Who, I guess) knows?

EDIT: Just to prevent people being a smartarse, I don't mean the guy on first base, nor do I mean Jim Neidhart. :p

I started watching Doctor Who with David Tennant, therefore I am predisposed to prefer him over Matt Smith. However, I really do like the job that Matt Smith is doing on the show.

A Youtube comment I read once said it best:

David Tennant was a great actor.
Matt Smith was a great Doctor.

i personally kinda like tennat more, but at the same time i see matt as the superior doctor.
david was great but matt is the doctor. i'm not sure what david was but he sure didn't even come close to being the doctor compared to what matt is doing... still i enjoyed david a bit more.
i'm really torn when it comes to this but generally i have to go with whille david was indeed great i do belive the shift to matt was at the right time. it made the show get back to what it was suposed to be.

David tennant was my first doctor but smith got me hooked on the series. The clever writing of Moffat's episodes combined with smith's chemistry with his companions is fantastic. If David had moffat as his writer instead of RTD then he would have been even better. I just think that Matt smith does the doctor as he should be. An old man with a lot of experience in a young man's body. Also the anger he gives off feels much more genuine.

I despise Matt Smith's version of the doctor, far too juvenile.
David Tennant managed to be quirky without being overly weird, and managed to convey emotion.
Smith can't act
