I thought this would be some political article on all the stuff Japan did in China during the Second World War and still doesn't apologize for.

Talking about how anime/games/manga have been butchered by importers reminds me of what happened to Harry Potter when he first showed up on the U.S. shores. The publisher thought that we dum-dum 'mericans no would understood what "bollocks" or "bogeys" would mean so they turned Queens English into Uncle Sams English.

Which confused the hell out of me at first until I realized what happened! Me: "Huh, I thought this little pecker was a Brit? This book makes me think that Hogwarts is in upstate New York!"

'Course I've the same thing often happens with America's exports. A Japanese friend of mine has played and beat both the US original GTA3 and Japan's imported version to which she said the differences and mistranslations are hilarious!

Instead of being angry at Japanese developers, you should be ranting at American publishers for not picking up any of those wonderful licenses to sell here.

I love the Japs - great sushi, fantastic anime, awesome hentai, and above all - great fun to kill in Crisis. :p

Anyway, I asked around and eventually resorted to the internet only to find out that every game I played at his house was a "Japan exclusive" game, in which case, instead of getting the game 3 years later (as usual) we're simply not going to get it because the Japanese are too simple to understand that Americans will pay good money (at least better money than their currency) for these games... Selfish Bastards...
A small part of your problem is that licensing rights for characters or series in a few of those games are in hands of grubby american corporations who will either charge too much or just not lend the license at all for an american release.
Case is even worse with crossover games (Battle Stadium D.O.N. comes to mind) where the licenses could be spread over several companies, making such a release just too expensive.

Mark0217 your 100% right. I've heard that the US importers of manga get nervous when even a guest star from another manga shows up in a story (which has been a on-again/off-again trend in manga).

Coincidentaly, an NIS America game is coming to the US from Japan and it's a cross over story containing over 24 characters from 7 games and 5 companies! Could you imagine the legal hoops it would take to make something similar here in the US? I shudder to think about the number of lawyers needed.

Oh, and in case you're wondering, it's called Cross Edge and it's due out in late May this year.

Go crazy with it.

There are too many things in Japan that aren't anywhere else in the world because they've locked themselves into a glass ball, and don't let baka gajins dilute their culture XD. Oh well though, they do make for interesting people.

Do you complain that Japan isn't exporting or other countries aren't making little toys that go on the stylus slot thingy on your phone? No. But that's freely available in Japan - because there's a demand for it. If you really want something from there you have to go get it yourself, it's not gonna come on a silver platter every time.

I feel a need to quote Yu-Gi-Oh the abridged series:
Joey: There was a season 0? How come I never knew about it?
Yugi: It only aired in Japan because it was super violent and depressingly bad.
Joey: Man, the Japanese get all the cool stuff.

It is quite annoying when they withhold a game, though. I think we can all agree they need to release Mother 3 here.

Somethings there just wouldn't sell here. This one thread (can't remember what it was called) showed this game for the Wii where you pick from a group of thong wearing men, or a polar bear, and use the remote to use different poses to break through walls while racing the other contestants.

Oh, and for some reason you race in a straight line.

I'd like to see more games make it to the western market. Problem is the market in the west is all shooty killy action, or sports so a lot of Japanese games that are about something much more slower paced don't get translated because the American game people don't think other Americans can concentrate long enough.
They do the same with Anime, it gets edited and dumbed down so Americans can understand it. I don't think it should be, Americans are just as smart as anyone else, when you start dumbing things down for a particular audience, you're just insulting them, like you don't think they can understand anything that's not edited until there's no reference of any other culture but your own.

I don't hate them, I hate their gaming and nerd culture.

Anime.

JRPGS.

Metal Gear Solid.

Visual Novels. (See JRPGS)

Nothing good ever comes out of Japan.

It annoys me when they don't release CGI movies over here in the cinemas, such as Advent Children because they wouldn't attract a big audience, especially not where I live. I think there was a cinema release in London, but I'm not too sure.
About the games, you have to consider the audience. They're probably far too obscure to reach us and probably won't be very successful over here.
Also, perhaps they don't want their games dubbed and a lot of people won't play a game if they don't understand what they're talking about.
An anime I watch is in Japanese only, so I have to watch fansubs. Ugh... fansubs.

If your nose has been in the news room regularly, you'd know that there was a game featuring capcom characters & a ton of anime characters in a game (Tatsunoko vs Capcom I believe?). Why, you ask, are they having trouble releasing it in America?

The anime characters are mostly from 1 company in Japan, so getting permission to use them in a game is rather easy, but when it comes to exporting it to America, the anime's are copyrighted by MANY different companies. Therefore, copyright difficulties.

Your DBZ/Naruto/One Piece game sounds like it's in a similar situation no? what are any of the other games you looked for, & did they have many crossovers of anime/game characters?

The japanese have been doing that for years now. They even have japanese exclusive versions of SSBM over there, containing more trophies. It's nothing new.

Even though I do find it ridiculous how people are very quick to say how Japan is the best country on earth, that they want to live there, it's not like it bothers me that much.

Anyway, I do feel your pain. My beloved Dreamcast still gets games released for it in Japan. PSO for DC still has servers in Japan. Games that my friends care about don't come here for a long time.

I feel more rage about this subject for Korea, especially with the recent titles of Huxley and Aion. There's things I'd love to try, but they won't even get here until they've been patched twice over there. :/

And there's several PS2 games that don't come out anywhere else...

I can understand the effort and resources it takes to localize a game, but you know, I honestly think they shouldn't bother sometimes! Anyone buying the game is going to want the original voices in Japanese anyway.. :/
