Surely WoW players are living a life merely in a different world, while celeb-aholics are just sucking up the lives of others

As much as I dislike MMo's I will give them credit for not being as chronic or wasteful as celeb fanatics.

I suppose that playing MMo's requires a certain level of devotion and commitment while celeb stalking and gossip mongering is seemingly a person's attempt to justify the absence of their own life by obsessing over someone else's.

I whole-heartedly agree.

Celebrity gossip is cancer of the mind.

Celebrity followers, for sure. Although MMO players don't go outside, they are communicating with people they (hopefully) kind of enjoy being around and are building friendships and community.

Ultimately both groups pursue equally fruitless goals, but being a former MMO player, I know that it does provide you with something like a social life right in the comfort of your own home.

We're talking about two completely different kinds of obsession. Celebrity obsession is passive. You hear, second hand, what some person you've never met, and probably never will meet, is doing with their life. This is a life that you will likely never have any bearing on whatsoever (unless you're REALLY dedicated/creepy), and as such have no real stake in. The closest you come is living vicariously through these absurdly famous people.

MMO obsession is active, you're playing an actual part in the growth and development of a character. Whether it is the stat grinding aspect of the game itself, or the detached social aspect that the massive player base offers, you're still *doing* something.

Which is more obsessive? Probably MMOs. They are mentally stimulating in a way idol worship can't be. Even the most basic, elementary mental challenge is more engaging than sitting idly. Most of us here know that being an obsessive MMO player has nothing to do with being lazy. There is a hell of a lot of research, experimentation, and number crunching involved in playing the game "right" by some standards. Listening to idle gossip has almost none of this. MMOs pull you in. They fill a certain need for cognitive growth.

As to who has more of a life, I would have to say the MMO freak. At least it's their own life their obsessing over, and not someone else's. Sure, it's an avatar in an arbitrary game world, but at least you, personally, put something into it. It is a part of you, as sad as that may seem to some people.

And the next time your sister gives you grief about them not being "real" people, ask her how many of these celebrities she's seen or talked to. Can she actually give a first-hand validation of their existence beyond the magic picture box? Are they any more real to her than the Blood-Elf you partied with/pwned (depending on allegiance) the night before?

Celebrity fanatics are by far worse. Atleast MMO players are accomplishing something. Atleast they're doing something. They're excersizing their brain, and communicating with people, if not in person.

I don't know much about celebrity fanatics but is there much to know? They spend their lives obsessing over what other people are doing. As in, they don't do anything. And I have new for them: celebrities aren't that great. You're better off obsessing over the accomplishments of historical figures, atleast then people will call you a historian.

People have died sitting in their chairs playing WoW, MMO's win this easily.
you say "people", the problem with that is, there are millions of players, and so few of them actually are either stupid or crazy enough to die over the game or even let it seriously affect their lives. Also, i play WoW for like 2 months every other 2 months, and to be quite honest, everyone online ridicules the crap out of people who die over Wow, and as an example...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHJVolaC8pw -- what isnt explained is that the girl committed SUICIDE, labouring under the illusion that she could join WoW for real, the fact is, even though it is tragic that nobody helped the girl (because she was clearly loopy in the head), there shouldnt be anyone holding an online funeral especially since they decided to hold it in a PvP area.

EDIT: I said Celebrity freaks

You're onto a kinda one sided debate here, considering the forum.

But either way, we spend hours of our lives entertaining ourselves via digital means, and getting nothing from it but the... actually, why we game is another discussion altogether. but regardless of your reasons you are simply wasting time.

with the celebrity obsessed it's the feeling that they are the people that are rich and famous for whatever they do, the unofficial world leaders in their field of acting or standing in front of a camera. and if they weren't interesting then they would vanish off the face of the earth.

now don't get me wrong, i don't care who's put on weight or who's sleeping with who. but it's no less of a waste of time, ergo, no worse a life.

Haven't people murdered because they were celeb obsessed?
True. Someone tried to send Björk a bomb-package through the mail once, along with an 18-hour monologue than ended with him shooting himself.

That fecking thief.

At least MMO players get interaction, and don't come off as damn stalkers.

Especially old guys who wanna fuck up a teenage girl but then they realize that barely any hot girls play WoW and then they get all mad and say they're gonna go take some wine and sleeping pills............

I don't think you really get the image of both the people here. There is an MMO addict who sometimes plays it at is job, loses friends and jobs constantly, and thinks that his level is something to brag about in target. A great example of this (to a lesser extent) is one of my friends. He plays an MMO called Runescape, i have never played WoW, so i have nothing to compare it to. Runescape is alright but gets repetitive after awhile. He constantly talks about his "level 99 hunter and cooking skills." No one really cared. The catch is when he wasn't talking about stupid crap, he was pretty cool. He was thin, not overweight, liked soccer (futbol anywhere else:Guess what country I'm from), and didn't really do anything else really nerdy (any runescape fans, im not insulting you, im just using an example). He also had the potential to get some girls. Another example is some girl i knew. She wasn't really hot, but wasn't fat or mean, or really ugly. She was, however, OBSESSED with Zack Efron (mainly) and many other "yummy" (her words) boys. She played softboll, and was alright, but she had every CD, had seen every High School Musical multiple (5) times, knew the songs by heart, believed Zack Efron would give her a chance at love, and was just plain crazy. Based on these people, both their obsessions screwed up their lives. The only difference where argument could take place is that gamers hang out with gamers, and celeb stalkers hand out with celeb stalkers. Because of this, i think gamers have more life because celeb stalkers are obsessive compulsive and gamers just have no life, most of them don't have a creepy medical condition. Celeb stalkers are likely to fight each other over not complementing/insultings a fellow celeb stalker/a celeb's cloting/lifestyle. Gamers, on the other hand, will fight, but most of the time if you act like a dumbass, normal people will critize you, and the only people who critizine you out of no reason HAVE NO LIVES AND SHOULD GET AT LEAST PART OF ONE. So in conclusion, celeb stalkers have no life because they all want to be a celeberty and thus all have super egos, so they'll never have friends, while gamers get along and can have a friendship.

And no, not all celeb stalkers are hot, most of them are fat and ugly and think that they look like someone who's hot.

And i'm not a nerd, i'm just procrastinating from typing an english poem essay.
Maybe this could be my essay(it's long enough).

Yeah, celeb fanatics are dumb. They look to Celebrity life because they are materialistic and unsatisfied with their own lives and instead have to worship a person who was in the right place at the right time, got the attention of a rich guy who thought they were talented, and got lucky. I basolutely hate Paris Hilton. All she did to earn that money was to unite with a sperm from a guy with the last name Hilton. And all these damn magazines with celebs on them; "I'm super famous and rich, my life is so hard."

At lest you do something constructive in MMO games. You have to plan and strategize when you play MMORPGs. MMO shooters require you to be sharp and alert.

Either way, too much of either is bad for you. You have to get with the program and lead a real life regardless of how dissatisfying it is. Call me old fashioned, but I like money that is my own (however little that may be) and not silver from WoW or the money that Lindsay Lohan blows on coke and booze. I prefer women that are not made of pixels or ink on paper. I like conversation that is not text-based or originating from headphones and wires.
