It depends really. Some remakes have been crap (like the remake of The Italian Job, which had almost NOTHING in common with the original). Some remakes have been good (for example, I actually liked the remake of Alfie, although that may be because I'm as much a Jude Law fan as I am a Michael Caine fan). Really you just need to look at each one on a case by case basis. That's the only thing you can do.
Depends on how the original material is used. If it is respected then I'm cool with it.

Being a remake doesn't automatically damn a movie to shitsville. I watch every movie on its own merits and decide if thats a good film or not. If I cut remakes from my movie watching there would be so many awesome movies I would've missed out on such as Man on Fire (The original is teribble)
