Final Fantasy has always had its ups and downs with characters, but I've always been under the impression that these two characters were the most poorly written in the series. They lack personality, they lack characterization. They can flit schizophrenically between between someone willing to help every Tom, Dick and Harry because its "the right thing to do" and helping no one because they're only in it for themselves. They aren't well-written characters, they have moments of true unlikeability. I choose neither for that reason. If you look at pretty much any final fantasy apart from those (with 1 being the exception), every main character is fairly well characterized. Final Fantasy VI was the master of this, but that, in part, had to do with a lack of having one main character that is the main character for the entire game.
I've always been under the impression that their side characters are way more interesting in 7 and 8. Cid and Barret were more interesting than Cloud. Hell, Cait Sith was more interesting than Cloud. And while I'm less familiar with the character from 8, I can guarantee that enjoyed Quistis' character infinitely more than Squall. No, this is not a case of me thinking they're emo, its a case of them being hollow, boring and poorly written. The next time a game wants to create a a character whose brooding, with a mysterious past, can they not use these two guys as the archetype?
EDIT: Also, in terms of main characters, Ramza has always been my favorite.
