Well its The Beatles really, one of the main reasons was they made music popular in every corner of the world and did alot of experiments sound wise. Guess after that maybe Led Zeppelin cause of the Hard Rock/Heavy Metal movement.

Also to Oasisblur Frank Zappa did had is share of influence in mainstream music without him Hendrix might have never touched a wha-wha pedal. In the end Hendrix work on the guitar can be credit to Zappa and Jeff Beck for creating the term Rock Blues, and be one of the first Guitarrist to do a mix of Rock and Blues.

Only one other person so far has voted for Sabbath!? I am shocked and appalled at you The Escapist.

Of course all of them are influential but I think Sabbath more so than the others (with the possible exception of Hendrix or Zep) as they wrote some of the most inspiring, heavy and catchy riffs ever. I know they've inspired my music writing more than all the others by a long way. And Iommi only had half a fretting hand to do it with!

Plus for rock music now, I don't think musicians would take inspiration from artists such as The Beatles or Elvis anymore because they'd be closer to the modern style of pop than rock.

The Clash...

They restarted the rock era after it got all stale and showed that you could be anybody and become famous

I wouldn't say they were the most influential, although I completely agree that they revitalized rock.
I don't see Queen on the list, nor Hendrix, so I chose The Who. Their early songs were very similar to Beatles' songs, sans the fact that The Who's are very enjoyable. They developed their style, and changed radically over the years. If you get a chance to listen to The Who's album Then and Now, you'll see what I mean.

Musically, it's impossible to say who has the largest influence, but the Beatles have the largest influence on the business of music. They were the biggest band in the world, and record companies still try to emulate the success of the Beatles. Whether it be their sound, their look, their style, or their promotion. Record companies are searching to find the formula that made the Beatles big and it effects every single studio artist.

It's pretty difficult deciding which one has had more influence, as all of them have had some form of influence in one area, such as Led Zep and Black Sabbath (metal). Hell, if we hadn't had The Beatles and The Stones, i can't imagine what most music would be like today.

So i just went for my favourite artist at this moment in time. Can't beat a bit of Hendrix in my opinion!

Elvis, because he was the first real rock star in the way we use the term today. Everyone before him were either not famous enough to make an impact or not talented/interesting enough to make a difference.

Without Elvis, there would have been no Buddy Holly. Without Buddy, no Beatles. It goes on like that.

i'd have to say Jimi Hendrix, mostly because he was one of the few to actually really experiment with guitars and the sounds they make and can produce

while Zepplin and the Stones are good they did also rip off a lot of blues musicians
That's because rock came from blues+classical music.

So Robert Johnson, the most influential man I can think of.

Also, Frederic Chopin.
Good shout there with Robert Johnson. I'd add Charley Patton to that as well, and maybe Muddy Waters, or BB King.

J S Bach
Robert Johnson
Captain Beefheart

In that order. Bach invented the modern musical system (all the notes and sounds in pianos and notation came from him).
Johnson's vocal phrasing, original songs, and guitar style influences to this day all styles of music.
Beefheart's influence on modern music is likewise immeasurable. He was a pioneer years ahead of his time doing things with songs and styles that no one, even to this day has topped.
Yes to the first two, not so sure about Captain Beefheart, I mean he definitely puched boundaries, but I wouldn't put him as one of the most influential musicians ever. I'd have said other musicicians have been much more influential. I'd say this man had more influence on modern music than anybody else in this thread:

actually rock came from a combination of blues and rockabilly/bluegrass

Zepplin has ripped off artists and not given them credit

Many people I know haven't even heard of Led Zeppelin and I don't know why. It's the second best selling band ever damn it!

I voted for Led Zeppelin because it's one of my favourite bands.

Also isn't Black Sabbath a metal band?

...metal is pretty much a rock spin off its normally included in the whole "rock" category like mind numbing repetitiveness and dance music

I am suprised of the voting. I would have thought more people would have voted for Dylan or the Kinks.

Depends on the genre you could say Sabbath and Zeppelin for metal
the who for punk rock
the beatles for pretty much everything else

and all the other ones matter as well. No one is better than the other; that being said
I vote The Who

For modern pop rock (I'm thinking the Killers or Franz Ferdinand or something like that), gotta be the Beatles. Sabbath, Zeppelin, Hendrix, and some of the others were influential on late 70's-80's rock, but that era is gone. Now it's mostly shitty alternative that tries way too hard to be the Beatles.

even though I voted zeppelin, for metal I would say sabbath, as they were one of the 1st bands to use the diminished 5th(or augmented 4th, or the devils note) and this was very important, and, in some ways, sabbath started metal
