Im gonna go with gearbox since Ive been reading that they are the ones that pushed the 2 weapons and shield recharge.
Nope, 3DR put those in. Gearbox just respected that decision when they picked the game up.

Well maybe they wanted to make sure it was just as crap as all the other games being released on PS3 lately.
I also blame the fans, I dont know why you would want to re-hash games which you know will be re-made and marketed to people who arent you.
To get angry at a remake is like pissing in the wind in my opinion. The old Duke will live on forever in my heart.

3D Realms and Gearbox.

3D realms did a shoddy job making the game. Gearbox is guilty of tidying up the trashy job done and calling it finished work.

If I tell you shit is completely tasty and hand you some, and you agree whole-heartedly and start to sell it, which one of us is at fault?

(Hint- the answer is everyone.)

3D Realms. They had 14 years. Gearbox had a couple of months. Even the highest quality studios couldn't fix a mess in a few months and even the smallest of companies could have made anything halfway decent in 14 years. They need to explain what the hell happened.

Anyone blaming Gearbox is an idiot, among those responsible for it not meeting expectations can be blamed on the following people and factors:
1. 3D Realms. Yeah Gearbox bought the franchise, but it was to get rid of what was becoming a tired industry joke. and they know it as Randy Pitchford even said he doesn't care about how well the game scores.
2. The Fans: When developers start listening to fans and giving them what they want, of course it's going to suck. Fans wanted the game, and therefore were expecting that since it was in development since 1999 , and the fact that it had been delayed again and again, it would be a manifestation of the best game ever made. and with that hype is hearby created and it spreads like an unwanted itch, and it increases people expectations. It's like the problem with Bioshock 2, where devs thought it would be good to play as one of the popular aspects of the first game and in this case it was the Big daddys. And that game sucked a massive pancake poop. the second game that is. Bioshock is a great game before people make gross assumptions.
3. Modern Shooters: Everyone is so obsessed with realism it's not even funny anymore. anything thats beyond the laws of realism is considered bad. the only solace anyone would have would be games like Serious Sam and Duke Nukem, but unfortunately the latter became influenced by Modern Shooter Trends adding the "OMG SO REALISTIC HE'S HOLDING ONLY 2 GUNS" to the gameplay.
4. Since there havent been any other games of Duke Nukem that have been released during DNF's dev hell, DNF havent had any chance of being able to bring in scores of new fans to follow it. the only people and this has been mentioned in many reviews that will enjoy DNF will be the people who played DN3D.

I digress, people including gamers will have to learn to accept that not everything will be what we expect when it comes out. anyway, what happened to the olden days when everything was fun? oh wait, the internet.

I love how people say "this game would be amazing if it was more like old games", when the reviews say the entire problem is that it keeps trying to throw back to ancient, outdated ideas.
It throws back to outdated ideas, but then it also tries to wedge in the things that are the worst cancers on FPSs caused ultimately by Halo.

it may be because i myself am behind the times or something, but i've been playing DNF today, and i really don't see what the problem is. it's fun. the two weapon thing isn't a big deal because you can keep any 2 weapons you like and there's those infinite-ammo-for-every-weapon boxes everywhere so nothing will ever run out of ammo. the graphics are fine. i don't see what's wrong with regening health. it lets you just have fun without having to memorize and micromanage the limited health packs that would be in the area.

what other gripes are there? i'm sure those are also being blown way out of the proportion. buncha whiners, i tell you.

Gearbox released it. They get the blame. I don't care about "all the work 3D Realms did on it". When you buy the rights and take over, it becomes your responsibility. Gearbox could have redone the game from the ground up and released a great game. They didn't. Yeah, everything is own Gearbox.
Seconded.
If you have an inferior product, you don't just put it out there anyway. You start over or you scrap it and accept your losses. The Gearbox name will be taking a huge hit from this, and that's the company's fault.

In the last Escapist podcast, the guys mentioned that this is pretty much just Pitchford's "legacy project". He wants to be known as the guy who finally got the game out on the market. Time will tell if it was worth it. DNF may sell well, but the long-term cost may not be so sunny (especially not coupled with the fact that many fans are upset about the apparent new direction of the Brothers In Arms series. But it's much too early to be sure about anything there).

My conclusion: 3D Realms. 12 years and this shit the best they could do? Considering they went bankrupt in '09 and the game looks like it should've been out in '05 or '06...

Gearbox probably tidied it up just to punt it out the door. Now they can focus on Borderworlds.

2K and TTI probably tossed it out to re-coup some of the money spent on making it since suing George would've been trying to draw blood from a stone.

I don't blame the fans... mostly 'cause they deserted it ages ago. The hype long since died away and the game became an industry-wide joke. It probably would have been better for it to remain vaporware.

I'd blame the gamers who went into it expecting anything different. I mean, come on, it's Duke Nukem. The game was great for its time, but anyone who hasn't been living in a cave knows that there's no conceivable way it could keep up with the pace set by modern FPS games.

It sat in limbo for 12 years and you're expecting it to not be utter crap? Does anything that ever gets delayed for this long turn out good? It hasn't been developed its been hold over a barrel and tortured for a decade before being revived after a complete cardiac arrest and you expect something good? Be amazed someone bother to finish the vaporware but don't be surprised it sucks, we all knew it would suck.

Despite hating Nukem's sense of humor, I can get behind hating on the design choices for DNF, ESPECIALLY in light of how it contradicts the character. There's no excuse for building up a macho meat-head and then designing his game-play to cater to pussy-logic.

And I strongly suspect Gearbox is at fault.
Maybe that's where they put the parody aspect that they keep talking about. =P That for all his gloating, Duke is in fact a big pansy who is out of breath after running ten metres and can't take three hits without dying.

I think the 12 years between DN 3D and DNF are to blame. 12 years of speculation, rumours, fake screen shots, real screen shots, etc.

I blame the fans for expecting it to be the second coming. It was never going to live up to the unrealistic hopes of the fanboys.

I also blame the developer for listening to the fans. They gave them the dated feel they were asking for and all of a sudden they don't like it.

Fans should be ignored in all development. Fan ideas stink. Its the same way everyone thinks they know what the coach of their favourite football team should do to make the team awesome. Managers and coaches don't listen to these people as they wouldn't last five minutes if they actually had the position. Their ideas suck once taken outside of the pub/living room.

Picked someone else: George Broussard. He's the one who was obsessed with making the perfect game, only him and not the whole of 3DRealms. He meant well, but his decisions where absolutely retarded, pardon my french.
