Nicholson. All three were great, but I just prefer the classic looking Joker over Ledger and I've never seen Romero's version.
He was the Joker of the 1960's Batman tv series with Adam West and Burt Ward.
I'm quite aware of where Romero is from, but I have never seen an episode of the sixties series.

Romero for this reason. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlusgU-MUZ4]
Okay, it was a tossup between Ledger and Nicholson, but thanks to that, I'm completely changing my vote to Romero.

Mark motherfucking Hamill.

And shame on you for not including his name, even if it was only the cartoon series Joker and the one from Arkham Asylum.

Mark Hamill is the obvious answer.
LIVE ACTION JOKER!! Come on people.

OP: Ledger's performance in The Dark Knight held that entire movie together, it's a shame that such a great performance will never be seen again. I prefer him to Hamill anyway because I never liked the animated show, even as a kid. Don't know why.
When we posted it the thread title was just Best Joker. Wardog simply chose to change the title instead of giving us a poll option and maybe digging up a new image.

Heath Ledger, hands down!

The other two look like... well, actual clowns. Heath pulls off the psychopath thing brilliantly.

All of them were great in completely different ways, you really cannot compare the three.
I agree. I like all three for their each reason, but for overall effect, I prefer Ledger's, just because he portrayed a Joker who out for nothing but his own enjoyment, and mixed both utter insanity with the Chessmaster...ehem ehem --> http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/XanatosRoulette

Originally, I voted for Nicholson, but then I saw this. Count that as one less for Nicholson, and one more for Romero.

Nicholson was awesome he made it feel as if the Joker was much more devious and that he enjoyed fucking with Gotham and Batman much more than Ledgers outright ridiculously insane actions.

Although Ledger is a close second.

They were all fantastic in different ways.

Mark Hamil was awesome though, I have to say--the animated Joker was impressive. And I know you say animated doesn't count. But still. It bears saying.

Jack Nicholson - to me, Ledger's Joker was just a bit generically insane whereas Nicholson seemed to better tread the fine line between genius and insanity.

Part of me can't help wondering if Ledger's Joker relies entirely on the Pencil Trick to become interesting.

Ledger. I mean, sure he's not reminiscent to the actual joker character, but I like his portrayal way better anyways. *has never read a comic book in his life*

I read Batman when I was a kid and only Ledger truly captured the insanity that was the Joker.

Did the creators of the 60s series ever read a fucking Batman comic?
Heath Ledger got the true Joker down. I never saw Jacks version.
To be fair, the comics of the day probably weren't much of an improvement. They had to be *some* improvement, but still -
