Anyone who does not say World of Warcraft is riding on the "Dood, the game is so addicting that you can't haz social liefz!!!11one" bandwagon.

Even though I got bored with it after a month or so, I would have to say WoW. I will admit, it was fun at first, and when playing with a group of people, it stays fun. Fun enough for me to say if my friends kept playing it I would still continue to play it. I will admit, that City of Heroes thing looks like it could be fun, but I am just to cheep to pay monthly fees anymore.

I voted runescape for the fuck of it, but I still think Everquest holds the title.

Guild Wars.

Free to play online (you only have to buy the game itself), fun, interesting story, fun missions, ability to play by yourself but be a in a party, effective and fun skill system, more-emphasis on knowledge of the game and how it works as opposed to where to grind for the best loot, easy-to-learn, and far more fun to try out different things than most other MMOs.

OMG RUNESCAPE!!!!!!! lol just kidding. i guess WoW because it either 1) doesn't suck as hard as others i've played or 2) it's the only one ,other than runescpae (god forbid), i've actually played. plus i was mildly addicted for about 3 hours when i thought to myself "dear god what have i become!"

Star Wars Galaxies Pre-Patch 9 with Jump to Lightspeed expansion.

Best MMO ever until SOE cocked it up.

EDIT: But if I had to choose a current one it has to be WoW

Or they just don't like the game, or is that not an option in your opinion?

Pre-Trammell UO! Classic for which mmo's wouldn't be the same without. Too bad the "genre" seems to have abandoned the days of old, however there are a few hopes left and seems mmos are starting to abandon the theme park ride template put down by Everquest. Probably because no one can really tap into that crowd already monopolized by WoW.

WoW, from a number perspective, I've heard they have over 11 million players, which is fucking insane. Fun-wise...well, I've never been into MMO's, so I wouldn't know.

Whether or not anyone wants to admit it, there are more people who haven't left their chairs in months because of WOW than there are grains of sand on a beach.
