Not in.

Well, they're good. But it's despressing. I feel like listening to the Carpenters or Cardigans (the singles are nearly apples and oranges).

They get a lot of points for being unique but for the most part I don't enjoy their music.

A wise man once said to me, "You're either a Stones guy or a Beatles guy." I think for the modern era, you're either a Tool guy or a Radiohead guy. I'm well past my prog rock phase, but I'm backing Maynard over Yorke.

An old friend paraphrased every Radiohead song ever for me, and now I just can't take it seriously anymore: "Whining, whining, silence, oh God Yorke's overdosing on valium again, cue the piano!" This goes on for nine minutes.

I, actually, listen to both of these bands (though Tool gets serious more airplay). I can't really see what makes them so diametrically different that you can't like both bands.

It falls between Yorke and Maynard. They're pretty much opposites, musically. Both bands are pretentious prog rock, but the singing styles vary a lot. Namely, Maynard's technically good while Yorke sounds like he swallowed an angry wasp.

And they don't have to be very different to force people into camps. I mean, The Beatles and the Stones are different, but they're in the same ballpark.

(Also, The Beatles nine months out of the year. I'm firmly in the Stones' camp in summer.)

Ah yes Tool, the 'prog' rock band that haven't progressed in 10 years. 10,000 Days is insultingly similar to Lateralus. It's Mer De Noms/Thirteen Step all over again.

The production on In Rainbows is amazing. Jonny's strings on Nude and the independently echoing percussion on Reckoner are examples of how Radiohead are pushing the concept of songwriting in modern pop music. It's not a revolution, but no one ever said it would be.

Well actually, Maynard said Puscifer would be a musical revolution, but all he did was rip-off hip-hop and make the misogyny even more overt.

It's all inconsequential regardless. Battles are the most modern band on the planet right now.

Battles remind me too much of Animal Collective at points. Or at least their LP does, as opposed to the eps.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of Tool though, I don't think I have listened to them enough though.

In regards to the "whiney" comment I can say I agree.

I am more impressed with the band themselves as opposed to the singer. I don't want it to seem that I think they are the second coming either. I think it's just an easy place to set a foundation about more modern music in general.

I think people forget Thom Yorke can sing normally as well, and does so on a number of songs. When you're the poster-boy for alienation and discontent though, you've got to have a certain style. No one bats an eyelid when Jonny plays contrary to key, but when Thom sings in microtones people get offended. He does have a high range for a male, but he's a small guy, that's the way of things. The beauty of Thom's voice is that there is no discernible gap between his normal and falsetto ranges. He slides all the way up without any change in tone. Sure, it's not a unique ability, but it still sounds awesome.

You can't really compare the two bands or their singers objectively because art is inherently subjective, and they are approaching different aspects of music from different perspectives. Tool have done amazing things for prog rock, while Radiohead gave alt rock some credibility in the 90s and continue to push forwards through modernism. Battles juxtapose modernism and post modernism, and I love them for it. You really have to see it live to appreciate the simultaneous instrument playing and looping shit they do.

I'm not an extreme fan who likes every song on every album, but I like generally all of their songs, and love that select few, indeed my band and I play 'You' at every gig we go to.
So generally I like them...

Radiohead are one of a few bands that I really just can't stand at all.

I don't really know why. Sorry.
