Last Monday, at a conference in San Francisco, California, Apple released what they call the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet, the iPhone 3GI. Of course, the greatest part is that only the most loyal Apple customers can see and use it.
Steve Jobs, having returned to the company from his medical leave just a few weeks ago, excitedly presented the new phone to an auditorium full of dedicated Apple users, who jumped out of their seats to point and yell, in awe of the incredible new iPhone 3GI. The breathtaking phone is so slim and lightweight that it almost appears invisible.
?The new 3GI is light as air,? said Apple senior vice president Philip Schiller, as he pulled the phone out of a display case. ?See how thin that is? It?s like it?s not even there. Those who really understand what we do here at Apple are going to love this new product.?
Apple also announced that along with the stunning slimness, the new iPhone includes several major hardware updates; such as a better processor and an improved screen which will provide more brilliant colors and an incredible resolution.
Currently, the 3GI is retailing at $599. But price was no obstacle for thousands of people in New York City who skipped or called in sick to work, just to stand in line at the Apple Store in order to buy one of these amazing phones.

Unfortunately, those who are not unconditionally loyal to Apple cannot see the new iPhone. Bummer.

I honestly think that once the masses really start seeing how this device is used, some people's harsh criticism may start changing their tune. I think people are more upset that its interface is too iPhone-driven and from first look that it doesn't bring anything new to the table. However, as an indie game developer and professional web developer I seriously see this as a game changer in many respects.

The biggest flak it gets is because of the lack of Flash support. However, most web sites tend to deliver their content in multiple approaches now. If Flash isn't detected, another technology (usually via javascript) is used. This is not hard to do as a web developer. On the other hand, not being able to play VIDEOS that are delivered in Flash is a PITA. (Especially when the video being played is already using the h.264 codec and the player is jwplayer. -- geek talk.)

I can't justify spending that money on what to me seems a very expensive toy. I like some of the features and such but i have no idea where i'd get use out of it. It's too large to use as a phone and not powerful enough to replace my laptop. I guess i could use it to sit in bed and browse the escapist but again my laptop does that.

Also it can't run some of the tools and software (e.g GCC) which i need for coursework. I think i'll stick to my macbook pro.

The people who love Macs (Liberal arts majors) will buy anything apple makes...

Yea, I'm a fan of Apple (I type this on my Macbook Pro and am about to go running while listening to Pheonix on my IPod Classic), but I've just got no use for this. Same goes for the Nook and Kindle (not Apple products, but some of the same concepts are being incorporated into the IPad). I look at glowing rectangles enough, sometimes I want to read words on actual paper. And ever try reading a computer screen at the beach? Good luck.

Gatti, be honest. Did you just create this thread so you could round up all the apple fanatics here in one place to do one massive group mock for their, lightly put, 'silly' choices?

Well, I made this post because I thought that there would be people here interested in the kinds of games that could be developed for the iPad. I actually reserved an iPad (32GB Wi-Fi model) because I'm an indie game developer and making a game for it ;-P

Good luck finding people that will buy the thing, the whole idea of them seems silly to me. If you want a portable device you get a PDA or new mobile (preferably Nokia, Samsung etc), if you want a small computer, get a laptop or netbook.

It'll also be playable on the iPhone and iPod touch. But the iPad is what the game is truly made for!
