I haven't played many games from this year so I can't really state they're the best characters of the year but I really enjoyed everyone from Mass Effect 2 and Alpha Protocol's Leland.

I had to vote John Marston. The guy was just too awesome for me. People call him schizophrenic and I don't really understand why. Most of the time he very clearly doesn't give a shit what the bigger groups are up to, he's just interested in helping his friends and family. So of course he'd go for whoever could help him track down his enemies fastest. For example, the Mexican government. But when they betray them he'll feel rightly betrayed, so when he went to help the rebels that made sense to me. In the end he reminded me of that retired agent from Taken (I think that it was called that?)
He's a family man who once lived a more exciting lifestyle, but when you threaten that family he's made he will wage a one-man war to get them back, and God help you if you think you've got what it takes to stop him.

Hudson, I would choose Tali, but she was out before. Tali IS the best char in ME and I will fight those who say otherwise.

Mordin was awesome, for obvious reasons.
Legion was an extremely well done example of a hive mind character.

either way i chose 'other' and my 'other' selection was a toss between Sahz and Boone
Yes FF13 was a crap game, and yes the characters were thinly developed and stereotypical
BUT he had twin pistols, a kick-ass afro and had a chocobo in his hair
