I had worn a succession of cheapo watches, then I met my grandfather for the first time in memory. He regaled me with how he found a nice watch while shovelling out grain cars. He then gave my mom $100 and lectured me on how "every man needs a watch."
We went into town, and I pored over trays of elegant fancy watches, and selected the bulky, ugly digital Casio G-Shock DW-5600. (Warranty valid while rock-climbing, motorcross racing, rock-drill operation, and SCUBA diving (not using Helium-oxygen diving gear).) So, I didn't have to worry about bumping it into the counter, or wearing it in the shower.
When I brought it back and was showing it around, the other relatives quietly asked my parents if I had trouble seeing, since the numbers were so big.
Wore it 22 years until the cost of replacing the gaskets and rubber casing was about half of buying a new DW-5600, so I bought a new one.
I wear a watch. It has a stopwatch, countdown, alarm, dual-time zones, is partially solar powered, and is faster and easier to read than digging a cellphone out of my pocket. And it reminds me of my grandfather.
Cell phones do a lot of useful things. So do watches. Use either as you see fit.
