Don't worry guys, windows 9 should be a good OS. As for me, I won't be ever upgrading to 8. I have no desire to.

Given how easy it is to bring back the Start Menu with a third party app and how everyone says the performance is so damn good...

What the hell. I just bought it and have started the update.

Huh only $40 I thought it was way more like over $100 more. Well really the only thing keeping m away was the price, but if it's that cheap then I might upgrade this Christmas.
It's that cheap if you upgrade before January I think. The normal price will be higher and the cost of getting it on a system that doesn't already run a version of Windows will be higher. This is just a way to get people to upgrade to the new system in order to make a faster transition to the new OS.

OT: I will probably get it on my old desktop since that is still running XP and the difference of having XP and Windows 7 is killing me. I can't bear XP after getting used to 7 and the price is quite neat. I also want it to have a 64-bit OS that is functional...

I don't know why anyone would upgrade. The only changes I observed were aesthetic, with the exception of some things that made using my computer more annoying.

If you're really wanting a visual change that bad, just install Rainmeter.
See? Better than Windows 8.
For the curious, yes, the wallpaper is a dreamscene. All of the shortcuts work, and the meters are in realtime.
That's awesome! does it work on surround? =D
As far as I am aware, it does, but there are some resizing issues. You may have to manually edit where things are, or just set them to draggable and give them the ability to go off-screen. The help section of the rainmeter site probably describes it better than me though :)

Menu 8 costs 5 dollars, but it's so worth it. You can also get a 30 day trial for it.

Got it for just 32 euro. It's very solid, stable, reliable and fast. I'm satisfied, I like the metro interface, it works for all the usual dicking around, browsing the web, watching Movies, listening to Music, etc. If you have to do some serious work then the desktop is still there. I upgraded from windows 7 and Everything just worked and that was nice.
It isn't that much more than a large upgrade to windows 7, but then again it barely costs more than pocket change so I'm cool with that.

Thanks for reminding me I need to snap up a copy of 7 before they become hard to get.

Every new version of Windows gets a little more antagonistic towards users who don't want to do things the way some Microsoft engineer believes is the ideal. More functions hidden brightly colored buttons. More fighting with the interface to put things where you want them, rather than in defaults. And now, we have an OS designed on the mistaken belief that MS has a chance for a belated presence in the tablet and smartphone market. Pardon me while I grimace.

I'm not looking forward to discovering which of my older pieces of software will no longer run, which pieces of hardware no longer receive drivers from their manufacturers, and what restrictions big M may put on new developers to achieve full compatibility with their vision for the way the PC market is "supposed" to do things. But eventually, yes, it will probably become necessary to have a computer running some version of 8, just as there is now software that won't run on Vista.

But I'll hold off while I can in the vain hope that by version 9, someone will have knocked some sense into the right heads and tried to cater to the users, rather than expecting the users to conform to the creators.

Did use Rainmeter untill it started nagging that there was no disc in the disc drive, everytime I started my laptop.

OT, won't be getting it for as long as possible.

I'll wait for 9. Windows 8 has no improvements worth noting. All of it is made for Tablets, and they just simply wanted to make it for touch screens. Last time I checked, I had a mouse and keyboard.

I downloaded the public beta and it seemed nice: the interface was intuitive, the 'missing' start menu should not be much of a problem and the whole thing was almost perfect.

For a tablet.

Since I won't buy a tablet (at least, not very soon), I probably won't buy Windows 8. Also, I think that when I finally DO own a tablet, Windows 9 is probably in stores.

Therefore my conclusion is I will never buy Windows 8. Windows 8 focusses on tiles instead of windows. And why would you still call it 'Windows' if you try to take away the windows.

Already there.

I tried it out without the Start Menu and found the desktop part to be crippled without it. With it, it functions just like Windows 7.

The Metro side... has some potential. I'm not crazy about all the flat colors everywhere (I don't want to live in an Apple ad), but there's quite a number of programs that work very well as an app and it looks to have a pretty consumer-friendly interface underneath a handful of stupid, stupid mistakes.

I'll get 8 to screw the mess that was Vista. I also want it because I can get rid of most of the system slowdowns that I get.

And I fucking want the Surface Pro. I want it a lot. All MS needs to do is add Office 13 already installed on a Surface Pro and it's gold for me.

Having seen it running, I can't say I'm in any rush to get Windows 8. I think I'd only update my Windows OS as it becomes necessary to run games on it, which, seeing as most games coming out now are still compatible with XP, won't be any time soon.

I've also recently started using Linux based machines now and then, and I'm really tempted to switch to that, I think I definitely would if I would be able to run games without having to use emulators or other third-party software.

Yeah I like a few of the apps, but some of them are indeed rather basic, or just a load of empty space. Like it was only designed with tablets in mind.

I really like the aforementioned Manga Tree App (a must have for manga fans), and the new minesweeper is really cool, especially the new adventure mode.

The App store has a lot of potential for some really cool stuff like the I-phone app store, so only time will tell if it's truly a worthy addition to Windows.

I heard that it was really locked down. Is this true? That could be bad for developers of all types of programs.
Nope, Metro is locked down but no serious user will use it. Other than that it's exactly the same. Of course while this is no problem directly to consumers it is pretty anti-competitive which is probably where the fuss comes from.

Anyway I've been using the Consumer preview for a while but technically it's an upgrade from XP/Vista for me.
Anything would be an upgrade from vista. Even OSX.

It's one of those things where if I ever NEED it then I'll get it,
(as in, my computer being otherwise incapable to running some highly desirable program)
otherwise I've no use for any of its features so have no reason to waste my time, money and effort in 'upgrading'.
