Normally I would be really excited, but Moore and Hollywood never quite get on as well as some would like. V for Vendetta was wrong, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was VERY wrong, I just hope they dont screw up one of my favorite books

incidentally, one of the reasons it works so well AS A BOOK is that there are elements there that make it impossible to work as a film.

I bet 10 bucks Rorschach tries to kiss Silk Spectre

*shrug* I dunno... the coastguard?

I'm unfamiliar with the graphic novel, but the movie looks very interesting to me. Definitely going to go see it.

Yeah it should be good. I'm interested to see how they will factor in the sections from the book that are in between each chapter, and if the pirate ship story will come into it.

In my opinion, something I like to call ?fact?, The Watchmen was easily one of the best books of the 20th century
The whole 20th century? Call me biased, but you mean out of Animal Farm, Catch-22, Deliverance, I, Robot, the Foundation series, Lord of the Flies, Snow Crash, and many others, you think that it was easily the best book of the century? I mean, it's a pretty good read, but probably not the best book in the last 100 years.

I distrust Zac Snyder, but I think I will end up seeing it. I've got my expectations very low and I doubt this movie will be as revolutionary as the comic was. Here are in my opinion, the pros and cons of the film from the trailers.

Pros
1) Snyder insisted on a Period Piece, big points in his favor.
2) The Comedian looks great
3) Frames Directly from the comic.
4) Snyder appears passionate about the project in more ways than one.

Cons
1) Zac Snyder, the man who brought us the most brainless comic book movie around (300) doing one of the smartest comics ever written.
2) The costumes look like they were designed by Joel Schumacer (sans Batnipples thank god)
3) Whoever is playing Silk Specter 2 looks totally wrong for the part.
4) I hate Zac Snyder's slow motion obsession.
5) I'm not sure Watchmen can be fit into 2 1/2 hours.
6) Watchmen is a mystery/drama, not an action/adventure, the trailers seem to indicate a prevalence of action.

To be fair, I am a rather huge Frank Miller fanboy, but I don't understand what was so brainless about 300. Sure, there's less of an emphasis on the plot, but personally, I don't think something's brainless just because there's a focus on action.

I don't think 300 is BAD, I just think it's pretty mindless Action fare. It is not an intellectual movie, it's big buff dudes, in cool fights against flashy enemies with some decent one liners. This is notably different from the much more cerebral level of Watchmen, which is an intricate mystery full of Pathos and Politics. As I recall there are maybe 3 or 4 action scenes in the 12 issue series.

I never said you said it was bad.
This brings to mind the movie Robocop: it was a pretty standard popcorn movie on the surface, but it shattered that popcorn feel where none of the characters are in any real danger, and was a pretty good film to go with it.
What I'm saying is that you should focus on wether the movie is actually good or not, not wether it has more emphasis on some plot aspects than others.

I probably will go see it, but I've already complained heavily that it is being turned into a FX extravaganza. Because I already know that they are cutting out the pirate comic and the chapter with Rorschach in prison.

Oh, hell. I'm going to go see it, if for nothing else, just to see how it stands up next to the book. Of course it can't and won't be the same thing because it's in a different medium. I just hope that Snyder captures the psychological elements of the story and doesn't try and make it into another 300-esq action movie. Action was not the driving force in Watchmen. I'm still super stoked to go see it though. Best story or our generation.

I'm going but with low expectations? Where does that put me?

It works really well as a system, I ended up liking Beowulf because I expected it to be lame and instead it broke ahead, made some clever metaphors, and even had a cool soundtrack in a very corny way.
