The amount of resources needed to mass produce space ships that are reliable in battle and give enough people combat and astronaut training would necessitate space warfare to have its own branch.

Nobody's going to lob plasma when a heavy uranium rod can do just the same job.

Besides, they'll probably call it the 'Earth Defense force' to rip of several sci-fi books and use them for litter picking and spying on women in the shower using their tremendously large cameras.

Probably it's own branch but it would be directly branched from the navy, well if you're talking about spaceship combat that is

Other, the civilian agencies presently at the forefront of space flight would be militarized and given a rank hierarchy analogous existing military branches.

At first it would fall under some other branch like the Army Air corp (which later became the Air Force) then at some point it would become its own separate branch.

I'm guessing the Navy would be in charge of the giant ships and the army/marines/etc of the assault and occupation forces.

I think this poll is completely off-base. Once we start exploring space it won't be about weather it's the Navy, Army, or whatever that controls space, it will be more about which country(S) have control of space.

I think when the time comes where we will need a Military or Government presence in space, there will either be a unification of most nations on earth, or just all out war.

I think there would be a coalition of sorts, to protects everyones interests. Then we would lose. Military coup ensues. Ruthless dictator enters. We win war but lose freedom etc. etc.

Trodden ground really.

Police/Gendarmerie. Space Warfare would be incredibly energy expensive so unless widespread space travel is accompanied by far more efficient ways of generating energy 'space wars' wouldn't make much sense. However the police would have an incentive to try and control space flight as smuggling and criminals fleeing their jurisdiction would presumably be just as common in an interplanetary trading/legal system as in a global one.

Though even this might be too expensive, maybe they would just follow criminals and only engage them after landing.

Since when does the military care about the costs of war? It's the military. It has so much in the way of resources that the cost of doing something is rendered irrelevant.

To be fair they'd pretty much have to rip off someone if they came up with a name for a space unit. How could they not theres that many sci-fi books with various incarnations of spacial federations or whatever.

As for the question it depends on what you mean by space warfare? Do you mean taking our own wars to space or do you mean goin up and doing in aliens? If it was just Space battle but with our own planet, then it would require and entirely new unit, as the current forces battlegrounds would remain. As for stretching it to planitary invasion, it would require a combination of all forces as someone else already said. Of course this is under the speculation that any country other than the Superpowers would get into space, seing as if they were all at war, it would start at home. And that just leads to nuclear war, which in turn makes humanity go bye bye anyway. So we can only assume that space warfare would be against aliens, which would require a combination of forces as said ealier...

Surely theres to much room for speculation?
