First Air force since they're in the most similar region and use similar tools, after it grew out more it would have its own division and would overpower all of the other ones because of the fear of big brother in the sky... Guess the shy territory would be a problem too. Apart from that the people involved would have drastically shorter lifespans spending their time out in space because their bones would decay.

Nobody's going to lob plasma when a heavy uranium rod can do just the same job.

Besides, they'll probably call it the 'Earth Defense force' to rip of several sci-fi books and use them for litter picking and spying on women in the shower using their tremendously large cameras.
To be fair they'd pretty much have to rip off someone if they came up with a name for a space unit. How could they not theres that many sci-fi books with various incarnations of spacial federations or whatever.

As for the question it depends on what you mean by space warfare? Do you mean taking our own wars to space or do you mean goin up and doing in aliens? If it was just Space battle but with our own planet, then it would require and entirely new unit, as the current forces battlegrounds would remain. As for stretching it to planitary invasion, it would require a combination of all forces as someone else already said. Of course this is under the speculation that any country other than the Superpowers would get into space, seing as if they were all at war, it would start at home. And that just leads to nuclear war, which in turn makes humanity go bye bye anyway. So we can only assume that space warfare would be against aliens, which would require a combination of forces as said ealier...

Surely theres to much room for speculation?
I've been meaning to add this to the poll. When I say Space Warfare, I personally mean war between different nations that takes place in space. However, if anyone thinks that by the time space warfare comes into existence that the main priority of the world will be to defend the entire planet against Spore-like creatures, then by all means state your opinion based on that.
Frankly, I originally said that it would be the Air Force, but someone posted something much much superior: The Navy would be in charge of the big, hulking, space carriers, since it's basically the same as commanding an aircraft carrier, administration-wise. Then the Air Force's pilots would be piloting the smaller fighters, bombers, and X-Wings (if it doesn't have X-Wings, they might as well forget about it), while the Marines handle invasion, boarding, commandeering, etc.

I'd think it would be some division of NASA, it seems to most plausible. Apologies if I've been ninja'd, I didnt read the entire thread.

I say we just put William Shatner on the bridge of our first intersteller ship and tell him
"Wing it."
Ron. Pearlman.
Who's Ron Pearlman?
Hellboy.
Why do I get the bad feeling he will punch the Moon into the Earth? Also, whoever will get an army into space first, will certainly be able to impose it's will on Earth ... although ... I wish an army in space, would be mainly to assist with space exploration, and possibly develop diplomatic ties with friendly aliens.

-cough- Republican Space Rangers =D

If you mean ship warfare then Navy. Navy spaceships bolstered with Marine boarding parties and army invasion troops and airforce fighters and bombers. And of course the nuclear bombs. Don't forget to bring those...

The Air Force would be the most likely canditates for our cosmic armed forces considering how they are already trained in the use of craft with jets (in which case, creating a space craft for them to occupy would just be the next step along) while the best we have in the way of 'envirosuits' would be a major pain in the arse for infantry to use (along with the fact that conventional firearms wouldn't work in space) and the idea of getting a boat into space (for the Navy) probably wouldn't last five minutes into the design process.

I'd have to say Navy. I don't see space warfare being all that different from modern day carrier warfare. Sailors, or whatever they would be called in space, to man the big ships. An air wing to fly the smaller, fighter style ones and marines for surface warfare.

Only bad thing is, how would you break the news to the air force?
