This is a serious question. I want to know whether you would rather save the life of your pet animal or me in an emergency.

I am a complete stranger and you know nothing about me, therefore I could be a disliked loner or beloved by family or friends, a dumbass or a prodigy, a criminal or a volunteer with children and the elderly. You can't know.

EDIT:

These poll results are hardly surprising; a similar question was posed by another user on a forum I frequent and most people were more than happy to let that OP die, even kill and torture him, over their dog or cat. There is a serious lack of empathy in the modern world.

Even as a pet owner myself (I have a cat), I feel that people who put the lives of animals they own over other human beings are SELFISH. Selfish because their pets love them unconditionally and provide companionship, and they don't want to give this source of happiness up, while many people don't get along well with other humans. However, I personally could never live with the guilt knowing that I let another human being with family, friends, a significant other, a job where they provide value to others, hopes, and dreams die for an animal that is barely self-aware and mainly exists to make me happy and entertain me.

It would pain me to do so, but I would kill my cat myself so that any one of you may live.

EDIT 2:

Yes, the poll question was poorly worded when compared to the content of the OP, sorry.
You have yourself to blame, the internet is a terrible place to ask this question. Were you really expecting someone 500+ miles from you to give you an honest answer? Half the votes are people who thought this was for "fun" and then you edit your op with a serious answer.

I would personally save you first, and then try to save the animal.

However; I dislike when people give TOO little regard for animals. Intelligence is not equal to right of life or right of love.

Although I don't even want to think about my pets dying, I would probably choose their death over the death of a human being. Even a stranger. You probably have more years ahead of you than my pets do. You are probably more sentient than either of them. You've probably been through more hardships, and you don't deserve to have it all come crashing to an immediate end all for the sake of a cat. An adorable cat who's been my lifetime companion, but a cat nonetheless. And honestly, I consider human lives more important than animal lives, due to our sentience.

Besides, I believe in souls and spirits. My cats will be fine.

I mean, if somebody's dog started mauling my leg, I would shoot that dog dead. And there's something wrong with the owner if he blames me for it. Of course my life is more valuable than that of a pet. And so is yours.

I don't know, if I had a psychic pet like Paul the Octopus (not literally Paul the Octopus, since I have a phobia of them, plus he's dead) who was picking out winning lottery numbers for me on a weekly basis, or one of those cats that cure cancer, or a talking hamster, then you'd be screwed.

I love my kitty, so you. Nothing personal, but there are only a few number of people I'd save over my cat...

I picked my pet. Selfish? Hell yeah. Does it come from a lack of empathy? No it does not. It comes from love and loyalty. I think it's just as selfish of you, OP, to expect me to save you simply because we have the same number of chromosomes. I'd pick my friend, hell, my family, of nine years over a complete stranger, no matter what species.

Let the pet die
Humanity, even in it's most pathetic form, is worth much more than an animal.
Humans are nothing more than animals. More intelligent animals who use their intelligence to domineer and exploit other animals while treating them as lesser beings. Humans falsely heighten themselves to the point that they consider themselves above that which they are, animals. We all die someday, and if I had to power of choice, I would choose that which is familiar over an unknown entity.

Haha comeon, OFCOURSE everyone will want you to die! lol this is honestly a pretty stupid poll, and the fact that you believe the people are serious, just makes me pity you a little...

@OP
Are you saying humans are worth more than cats?
Absolutely. Your cat would have shown Hitler equal devotion as you if he fed it regularly, bought it toys, gave it attention, and kept it safe.

No there isn't. It's about association.

Mammals have evolved to instinctively defend their own family, and the ones that they know, it's basic survival.

Moreover do you ever find some black humour funny? That's because you're distanced from it. If you were anywhere near closely involved it would be tragic, almost heartbreaking. However it's absolutely fine for most people on the internet to shout "raep" and praise pedobear.

Please have some more common sense before posting hate next time.

Otherwise I'll just assume you're trolling (which in all fairness you probably are).

Good day (night) to you sir.

Selfish? Lack of Empathy? No. What you have is life, what my pet has is life. Your humanity does not elevate the value of your life. You present me a choice between two lives. One I know, one I don't. I'm simply making the logical choice. If you feel offended simply because I chose to forgo the human choice than there truly is a lack of empathy in this world, especially for non-human life. Life is life no matter who it belongs to.

I'd let my pet die. People always trump animals. Unless it's like a serial killer or somebody directly threatening me or other people, then maybe not so much.

Go up to a parent that just lost their child, and tell them that you're more upset about losing your dog than they are about their kid dying. Go on, I dare you.
Go up to them and say you're more upset about losing your six kids and parents than they are about losing their dog. It'd still be callous, no matter what it was you lost. You're arguing something entirely different, something which no-one was disputing in the first place.

The poll results make me sad for humanity, no offense anyone but a mere animal is worth nothing compared to that of a human being.

Also, the "monkeysphere" just sounds like an excuse to be douche :p
