Hey, who left out Charlaine Harris [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Southern_Vampire_Mysteries]?! (i.e. writer of "The Southern Vampire Mysteries" which then became the TV-series True Blood).

Christopher Pike.

Where the hell is he on that list? Darren Shan was good as an author but as for who "wrote the best vampires" I have to say Christopher Pike's books may be pure pulp fiction but god... damn... his vampires make all other vampires look like pussies.

The protagonist of his The Last Vampire series is just the most extraordinary character I have ever read. The books are incredibly violent, visceral and fucking terrifying and I am amazed that the author is not more well known. I see it as a hidden gem, for anyone lucky enough to find it they will love it.

But I think the problem is the kind of people who pick up "vampire books" are the Twilight type, i.e. teenage girls who want their own special vampire "bad boy" only he is something stupid like a vegetarian.

But if Twilight is teen drama, The Last Vampire is teen-horror and is no love story, teenage girls won't like this, thins is the kind of vampire book Sam Peckinpah would make into a film. I mean anyone who has watched the Hellsing OVA or read the manga then they must READ THE LAST VAMPIRE!

Another book that is absolutely wonderful by Christopher Pike is Monster... nothing to do with vampires but it starts off with a school shooting and it actually gets darker and more macabre and terrifying from there.

The only major weakness of the White Court are those touched by true love: Mere skin to skin contact with such a person is enough to give them severe burn injuries. Feeding from one would be like 'Drinking burning gasoline while standing in a pool of Napalm'. Ouch...
Also hinted that anything made by someone who truly loved them could burn them as well.

I feel like I should also mention Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The show's random vampires are mostly overconfident idiots that are killed without any real effort needed, but it also has several vampires that are just the opposite, like Angel, who somehow manages to simultaneously be a brooding and tortured vampire and (seriously) not suck, Spike, who is badass incarnate, and Angelus, Angel's soulless inner demon who is arguably more of a complete monster than Dracula.

Barb and JC Hendee's Nobel Dead saga is top of my list.
The Dresden files, Legacy of Kain, WoD (old version) and DemonHunter (the Dead Camper Lake ones) all deserve a mention.
I do love the sheer variety of the old myths (and by that I mean all the old myths, not just the ones that inspired Dracula). Comiog before all the novels and films earns them bonus points.

The main character in Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption was a total hottie. And the rhetoric! *faints*

But seriously, Christof was kick ass.
