So I was salivating over reading about the 3DS today, and the thought of going against my plan of waiting for the Ocarina remake to drop before I pick up a system crept into my mind. I thought about buying one sooner than expected. I realized that I don't really have much of a basis on whether or not the system's worth it at this point in time, so I thought I'd pose this question to the Escapist: Should I buy a 3DS? I can easily afford it, but the casing on my laptop is slowly breaking off. It'll need to be replaced soon, although it can probably wait. I'm not sure if I should drop all this money at once though. So, what do you say?

Not on a student budget :(

Might consider it next year, I'll see how the game lineup goes.

As for you, the person who knows best is yourself.

Except I don't have any idea as to the actual worth of the device, which is why I'm asking this here.

I played with the one my co-worker bought and am thinking about getting one now. I'm still probably going to wait until this summer when Zelda is out though.

I personally don't give two shits about anything Nintendo does anymore, but hey, you wanna buy one, go for it.

Although you might want to wait a bit. As with most consoles, there is likely to be very few decent games at launch.

Nah. I'm not into handhelds.

Y'know, I feel rather sorry for the people responsible for marketing the 3DS. It's main feature is impossible to demonstrate without giving prospective customers actual hands-on time with the device.

The 3DS has launched with one of the absolute saddest lineups that I have ever seen - it's selling mostly off gimmick alone.
With a gimmick that good, they're not going to need quality games for at least a year.

OP: I don't have one yet but I'm dying to get one. Hopefully I can get one very soon but I need to work out whether I can afford it or not at the moment first.

Waiting until the second generation seems like the smart move. By then, I'll be able to see what games are coming out for it and if they will have fixed the short battery life. I've also heard a lot about how the 3DS if picky about what angle you look at it from. Hopefully, they can make that more manageable.

What do you mean? You can actually feel this guy's mind being blown.

Yep, I picked mine up just a few hours ago. I love payday! Picked up Rayman 3D on it, now I'm just waiting on Starfox, OoT and Devil Survivor. Have to admit, I'm glad I coughed up for it, Rayman is gorgeous (the game, not the character you perve) and it's the size of a DS Lite with a bigger screen, so I don't know where people got the idea that it was a brick like I heard. Also, been playing for 3 hours straight with the 3D all the way up and I don't have even the slightest bit of headache or eye strain so don't listen to all the whiners who complain about that.
