AVGN is kind of a big deal around the internet, and he finally put out that movie he's been talking about for so long. I haven't seen it yet, and probably won't for a while, but I still want to know how good or bad it is.

For those of you who have seen it, how was it? Did you see it during the theater tour, or did you watch it online?

I'm waiting for it to be released on DVD so I can get it for a friend's birthday; we're both fans and it'd be great to watch it with him on his b-day yo

From what I've heard, it's pretty good so I wouldn't be hesitant to at least rent it online.

I haven't watched an AVGN for a long time. However I did rediscover James Rolfe's in his videos when he's messing around with his friend Mike

my favourite nerd videos are also the ones where he looks at old hardware (like the jaguar)

I suppose AVGN deserves some of the credit for getting me back into video-game-related media and leading me to my current entertainment regimen (i.e. AVGN -> Screwattack -> Game Overthinker (Moviebob) -> Escapist Magazine), but I'm not that interested in this movie. I never cared for the profanity, scat humor, campy special effects, or storytelling in the AVGN videos, finding much more to enjoy when he simply just talked about the games. As such, I remember enjoying things like his Castlevania retrospective. I'm still subscribed to his channel and will occasionally watch one of the 'James & Mike Play X' videos (watched the NES Double Dragon one recently).

I followed him for a while and I'm well aware he enjoys filmmaking more than anything else, but I fear the AVGN just won't transfer well to a film. This is especially after the fact that Rolfe has definitely not connected much with the character for a few years. Also, he was funny but was never much of a screenwriter.

Just finished it! It was pretty fun, but some of the editing and technical aspects (mostly audio) were a tad awkward. It was a good laugh though, and that's what counts.

It didn't blow my mind at all, but it had a lot of heart.

A true love letter to the fans :)

I saw the trailer, and that was enough for me to not wanna get within a mile of it. I was never much a fan of AVGN anyway.

I didn't really like it. It felt like a general action/comedy/sci-fi that happened to star the AVGN. It could have starred anyone and been the same without changing too much.[footnote]Really, only dialog and the "let's get him to review our new game" thing would need to be changed. Any character that wants to find the ET cartridges could easily fit right in.[/footnote] I would have preferred the movie and the ET review to have been separate. Still, you can see a lot of love and labour went into this movie and there are thousands or millions that do love it and that's what counts. Not to my taste, but a good watch none-the-less.

Internet Aristocrat said he heard stories about actors making fun of James during the shoot, and he got pissed off about it.

Anybody else hear anything about this?

Have seen it a couple of day's ago.
It has a few good and "lol" moments, overall not to bad really.
Just enough self awareness to make sure they made it funny enough without being ridicules or to serious.

I liked it, especially the review at the end, going against the main stream and being honest about the game.

There was one very clever inside joke during a character's death scene that was actually really funny if you caught the reference. Other than that, most of the movie was painfully overacted and most of the characters were cringe-inducingly annoying - when the titular foul-mouthed, disgusting pessimist is among the most likable character in the script, its really hard to sit through sometimes.

Still, the $5 rent price to satisfy my curiosity and knowing that it went to supporting a small, but genuinely enthusiastic and passionate film maker made it worth it. Behind the Nerd character, I sincerely believe James Rolfe is actually a very talented, creative visionary, and I hope that this movie helps launch his ability to start a serious, grand project like he's always dreamed of doing.

I'd give the movie a 2/5 on its own merits, but I still recommend it.

I actually like the idea of movies that have some sort of gimmick, whether it has some select actor or personality, I'll usually go and see it once, as long as I have some idea of who they are.

The AVGN is one of those personalities that I feel I won't like the movie too much, but I'll be glad to see it at least once (I didn't know until a few days ago that the band The Killers did a cover of the AVGN theme song, so I'm more interested then I previously was), and I could end up pleasantly surprised. I am looking forward to seeing it though.

It was fun.

It seemed a tad self-masturbatory at times, particularly the opening scene, but in that sense it was very true to the character. James Rolfe has of course, always taken an effort to distinguish the character from himself. The humor was about par with the webshow, which is what I expected when I watched it. It was cheesy, as was the acting and a lot of the low-budget special effects, but it's apparent that that was what Rolfe was going for. It was after all, a love letter to both the fans and the shitty games and movies of old.

It's obviously not the Best Thing Ever, but there was something satisfying about seeing someone's longtime dream come into fruition. I hesitate to actually give it a numeric score, so I won't bother. I do highly recommend it to fans though - I can agree that it's probably not worth watching if you didn't like the character to begin with.

It's good and bad. It's very self-serving to James Rolfe, acting as a 2-hour advertisement for his Angry Video Game Nerd persona, but at least the movie's title warns for that.

*SPOILERS*

It brings in themes of old B-movies and conspiracy theories, revolving around the Nerd's relationship to reviewing and his fans and the dumping of hundreds of thousands of unsold Atari video games in 1983. This is the only urban legend I know of where the event is true and the urban legend disbelieves it.

This movie only appeals to fans of the Angry Video Game Nerd - clearly James Rolfe was the creative director for the movie as many of the visual and art effects bear striking similarity to those used on his show.

The tone is very farcical and light - it's a parodic modern B-movie minus any serious allegory.
