I second that.

It's zombies today, but who knows what the next big thing is?
Maybe it's homosexual Jewish Nazi's, maybe it's just regular, normal people (Heavy Rain being left out of the discussion), maybe it's just inanimate objects, like fridges or chairs.
Fads sell big time, and what can produce a lot of money for the gaming industry, will be used, reused and reused again until it's abused.
Aye.

A long time ago, we had platforming fever (Gex, Crash Bandicoot, Mario, Spyro, Banjo and Kazooie, etc).
Then it was Space Marines.
Now it's zombies.

Oh, and welcome to The Escapist.
I just hope that the next big thing will be something game developers can actually be CREATIVE about! What is there to be done with vampires? They suck blood and kill people...Great...
Zombies eat brains and...kill people! Big friggin' surprise.
Oh, and if any game developer ever decides to make a game where you are the zombie and have to kill zombie hunters (Stubbs the zombie not included, as it was made way before the zombie fad), I'd say congratulations!

And thank you.

Why zombies?

They require little to zero story, and are therefore easy to insert into pretty much any game with a weapon.

'oh noes! zombies are attacking! lets defend this building/kill them all/run away/die!'

Backstory? Easy enough. Crazy scientist makes a virus. Some demon is trying to destroy the earth. Zombies feel like some fresh air. Take your pick.
Motivation? They're zombies, so none required.

It's just a lazy way to pack 'new' content into a game.

Zombies are probably in because Vampires suddenly got a too feminine reputation.

How come so few games centre around werewolves by the way?
I'd love a werewolf game. Especially if it allowed me to be one.

Alas...

Why zombies?

.........................

Because you can shoot them... That's it.

And I'm getting sick and tired of them too.

Your statement is untrue and poorly backed. If it was true, it's because it's fun to shoot zombies and it's a fun role play.

There wasn't an option for "I love zombies but not every game needs them", so I got lost on my way to fridge. ;)

I really don't understand why they haveto smear every damn game with this zombie bullsh*t, it doesn't add anything it's just irritating.
I love games that were made with the purpose of killing zombies(L4D) but when they just tack it on every game it's simply retarded.

Why is it that pretty much every game now has a DCL to do with zombies for example; Red Dead Redemption. I have been forced to watch Zombie film after Zombie film because my boyfriend love them so and I'm pretty much fed up of Zombies. Come on game developers, why can't you come up with something different? (and not Ghouls. Ghouls are just radiated zombies.) What's your view on this zombie invasion?
Ironic, I was just on my way to make a thread that has something to do with zombies.

Anyways, the idea of zombies is interesting, a single virus (or other brain deteriorating thing) causing the downfall of huge societies and the eventual restructuring of smaller, more crude societies. Plus, zombies are cool.

But that being said, I don't think they should be tacked onto every game, movie, novel, etc. If you're going to do zombies, make them most of the story, not just a side quest.

But I'm actually looking forward to RDR's zombie DLC and I'm a fan of Nazi Zombies, so sometimes, if you do it right, tacking zombies onto something unrelated is forgivable.

I really don't care. If it's fun, it can tack on some extra playtime to a game I might have put down sooner. If it doesn't look fun, I just ignore it. Judging from the poll results, people still seem to have fun with zombie add-ons, so let them have their fun, and just ignore the DLCs until it blows over.

They're a morally-neutral enemy that any speculating nerd can conceivably take in a fight. They also represent the erasing of all your current worldly cares and woes, because the zombie apocalypse would mean no more parents, or school, or shitty day jobs; instead you get to be a badass.

So it's two-fold, a badassery-fantasy and an apocalypse-fantasy.

I just hate the Left 4 Dead and Dead Rising games because they try to take themselves WAY too seriously when their storylines are just piles of crap.
Left 4 Dead and Dead Rising take themselves seriously? You are joking, right?

For the fad in zombies I suggest looking at Escape To The Movies review on Zombieland. It gives quite a good rundown on why zombies are popular. In a nutshell - killing stuff like vampires and aliens and orcs and crap is all well and good, but what really pisses most of us off on a daily basis is basically.... people. And zombies are people. And we get to kill them in games. Which is kinda fun! More fun than wasting demons from hell or even Nazis..

Because Zombies are now popular.

Think about it, Call of duty: Nazi Zombies
Halo: Infection
Dead Rising
Left 4 Dead

Probably more.
I can understand that but seriously, Zombies were fun for the first 5 minutes then it just gets really really dull. I'm waiting for the DCL of Left 4 Dead where the survivors aren't even bothered anymore; (in a dull tone of voice) "oh look, ANOTHER jockey" *gun shots* "he's dead now."
Check out Vampire Bloodlines. Its Awesome. Proof that Vamps kick ass.

Also, Left 4 Dead has a storyline? Did I miss something?

Personally I would rather see less zombies than there are at the moment but I don't hate them, what I would like to see are more games where you play as vampires (The awesome kind not the complete bullsh*t) can anyone recommend any titles?
