I don't see anything wrong with zombie centered games like L4D or Dead Rising. But I do have to agree that they shouldn't be put in every game. Some games would be ruined by the appearance of zombies. But I got nothing against them in general.

I prefered zombie games when there actually was a reason for them being there and not just thrown in because it's practical and easy to abuse.

Resident Evil for instance. The story might be crap, but they still explain WHY there are zombies everywhere. Besides, not only humans are affected; there are dogs, snakes and more.
Also you can't switch out the zombies without altering the whole game. In a game like Dead Rising you could have vampires or mutants or landsharks and it wouldn't make much of a difference.

Why the hate for L4D?
Also, to my knowledge, RDR zombie DLC will be the only time I will get to kill zombies in the Wild West, so I may consider purchasing it.

Why is it that pretty much every game now has a DCL to do with zombies for example; Red Dead Redemption. I have been forced to watch Zombie film after Zombie film because my boyfriend love them so and I'm pretty much fed up of Zombies. Come on game developers, why can't you come up with something different? (and not Ghouls. Ghouls are just radiated zombies.) What's your view on this zombie invasion?
First off, I love zombies. Always have, always will. The more zombies, the better.

That said, I can understand why zombies have always been popular. There's something frightening about the end of society. Having nowhere to go and doing nothing else other than to survive day to day can be scary. Zombies are one of the easiest ways of bringing about this fall. The dead eating away at the living brings to mind a lot of ideas and concepts that writers can fool around in. The past destroying the future, the blurred lines between the dead and the living, the moral complications of a lawless world, the idea of killing loved ones to save yourself--these are all themes that can be played against the backdrop of the zompocalypse. It's an idea that many are fascinated with, and it can be played to represent diverse themes.

Now why do we have the flux of zombies in games currently? It sells. It's a fad, but it's a fad that waxes and wanes as time goes on. Many fads just tend to die when the popularity of them slides. Zombies (along with other known supernatural creatures) always come back after a short time. Adding the undead to game is simply a result of the popularity of zombies at the given time. Just understand that zombies are a type of sandbox that creative folks love to dabble in. It certainly makes for some interesting settings and situations, like the aforementioned Undead Nightmare. If you find that you tire of zombies, you probably aren't alone, but that doesn't mean that other will.

tl;dr, Zombies are a sandbox of ideas, I love 'em, others do too, they sell, not much you can do.

Dead Rising games because they try to take themselves WAY too seriously.
Sorry, have you ever played Dead rising 2? There is no way it takes anything too seriously, you can ride a green mankini and ride a pink kiddies tricycle.

It's just the in thing at the moment, like everything it will explode and everybody will cash in on the thing at the time then after a time it will die.

Musicals were dead till high school musical came along now theres step up, glee and about a bajillion more, fantasy was dead and unused then Harry potter came along now we have twilight and others.

Games that started with Zombies (ala L4D and DR2) are perfectly fine because that's what they started with.

but games like COD and RDR shouldn't be trying to shoehorn them in on DLC because it doesn't really fit or make sense in the grand scheme of things. Love zombies, but let's keep them in their little world and keep nazis in their little world. We good?

Nearly two pages of 'What's with all the zombies lol!' and no one thought to post this:

Zombies are hot right now for a number of reasons.

Current hardware allows developers to have tonnes of enemies onscreen at once. Of course, if you're going to have tonnes of enemies on screen at once, you need to make sure that they're all relative easy to kill on their own. No bad-guy archytype does 'massive crowd of easy to kill baddies' quite like zombies.

And the story practically writes itself. A plague has turned the residents of New Orleans/Las Vegas/Blackwater/Tokyo/Nazi Germany/The Imperial City* into mindless zombies, which you must now (shamelessly) kill en masse.

Besides, it's all matter of prioritizing gameplay over story, which is what games should be about.

*I seem to recall see a Mod for Oblivion that would cause a zombie outbreak.

Zombies are just getting soo annoying because they're all designed the same. They can all run fast, especially the obese ones, they all attack you the same way except in left 4 dead with the special zombies which were kinda cool until the witch butchered you to death for the 20th time trying to get the headshot achievement and when LOUIS STOLE EVERY SINGLE KILL (Angry Face.)

I'm glad I actually wrote this post because I had been pondering this thought for quite a while because zombies aren't just called zombies. Theres the Ghouls of Fallout, the Hollow Men of Fable 2 and, well, Nazi Zombies (which makes no difference I suppose seeing as the word Zombie is still in the title yet but it helps you see who's side they're on) in Call of Duty.

But what about using something different or making the Zombies useful? Like mowing the lawn and killing people trying to kill you

They're fodder. Endless hordes to be killed in fantastic and awe inspiring ways. Or the road blocks to get through and survive past. Basically they're all purpose plots. You know the one. The one where the Writing team showed up late so they basically just decided to screw the tossers and make a zombie game so they didn't have to worry about story. You know, like that space marine plot a few years back. You know, you're a super powered badass, kill everyone who looks different. And honestly i prefer zombies to that so. Yeah, it's not to bad. And honestly it's not even that big of a fad. Yes lot's of games have zombies, it's not like EVERY game is centered around them. Left 4 Dead, Dead Rising, Resident Evil. The list just about ends there.

First of all, it's DLC, for downloadable content. I usually don't fix spelling, but because I think you've gotten the wrong idea (judging by the repeated nature of the mistake). No meaning to offend.
No offence taken, thank you for that. I thought it looked a bit odd

Wow, quite alot of support for the Zombies.

I just don't see the need why they need to turn up all the time. I can understand that they sell just like anything that mentions Boba Fett sells out within seconds (I don't see how, he fell into the pit of Cancoon when R2 D2 saved EVERYONE in Episode 1 and continued to do so throughout the whole saga.)

Bioshock, my personal favourite, did quite well without the use of Zombies because there were splicers and you had not only weapons, but plasmids. Why not make more games like that? Where people, with access to genetic materials, have altered themselves to become crazed maniacs with a desire to kill. That does sound like the Super Mutants of Fallout but these crazed maniacs wouldn't be as stupid.

I love zombies, every type of them...it is my FIRM beleif that every game would be better if zombies were included.

ohh and, I think you're overreacting, there has always been a thing for zombies...games like House of the Dead, Resident Evil(the old ones), Extermination, The Thing(the game, not the movie), Army men sarge's heroes 2 are a proof to that, and I could go on with the list. These are old games from the Ps2/Ps1 era.

Well, the last really good zombie game that I played was Stubbs the Zombie. Zombies are the current mook. Developers need a mindless, faceless enemy that is easy to identify and doesn't need a huge amount of work put into it.

Zombies are popular because we all love to eradicate the teeming horde of enemies that overwhelm with numbers but are fun to shoot.

The slow, shambling zombies are just walking targets, designed to allow you to maim them as human substitutes without the repercussions of being called sadistic or vicious. The faster ones are a little more scary, and are aimed at a different crowd methinks. Still fun to blow their heads off though.

Better than Pirates? I beg to differ...

That aside, I must be missing this Zombie spam, because there aren't that many games with zombies. Seriously, look at a list.
