You've gotta consider the fact that most people are right handed. While I'm sure that still doesn't change much, from a developing/marketing standpoint, you've gotta appeal to the biggest audience. Although having an option to make the character left handed couldn't hurt, and I'm sure it wouldn't effect the gameplay, but you also have to consider games that have 3rd person perspectives.

Take Prototype for example, if Mercer were left handed, then he would grab people with his left hand, have the blade on his left hand, the shield on the right, etc... While you could say you could just mirror it, I'm pretty sure more effort has to go into it than just that. More animations will have to be made, as well as different models for those powers. I'm saying they might look different since they look so irregular to begin with, and while the shield *might* be a simple switch from arm to arm, the blade would have to be redone to suit the left one, since the power (like most of the others) goes up the entire length up to the shoulder. As a result, more money would have to be poured into the game, and as we all know, games (especially AAA titles) cost A LOT of money to make, and I don't think publishers and developers want to spend even more.

For first person shooters, putting the gun in the left hand shouldn't be too difficult. I remember back when I was playing unreal tournament (the first one), there was an option to put the gun on the right, middle, and left, so it shouldn't be too difficult to do it with today's modern games.

Unreal games you can have it left handed I think, also in FIFA games you have to choose your preferred foot. I've never really given much thought to it, though I suppose, seeing as you can select races and genders in most RPG's these days, does seem like a weird thing to have left out.

Well, the gun aiming, I can understand. But the swords? In medieval times you either learned to be right-handed or got murderized. So there's that.
Thats nooot entirely true. Left handed dualists has always had the upper hand.

And back in Rome, left handed gladiators were highly priced, due to all gladiators only being taught defense against right-handed opponents.

I'm a left-handed sword fighter my self, and I have won several sparrings because of just that^^

[Edit:] With guns of the other hand, I have a slight handicap, as most firearms are made for right-handed shooters...
he is acctually right, just not in the way you think.

because left handed dualists had an advantage in melee combat the Catholic Church declared them 'Agents of the Devil' during midevil times. if you where found to be a left handed sword fighter, you where often declared a heritic or witch and burned at the stake.

this is mostly because of the 'handshake' concept... As you extend your right hand for a hand shake you prove that you're un armed. however if your left handed such a gesture is empty as you can just as well wield a sword while extending you're right hand in friendship.

Whenever I play first person games, from shooters to RPG's, every game character seems to be right handed. While I understand why that is the default setting for game characters, what I dont understand is why there can not be an option for characters to be left handed. I am sure it would not be all that hard to program (just flip it around), and it is really odd for me to see a character holding a sword in his right hand, so why not just have the option? I am fine with a couple of games not having it, but I just find it odd that you can not do that. Thoughts?
It's not as easy as "just flipping it around". Animations often involve other models, both from the environment and other enemies/characters. You would have to re-do each one to make sure that it worked properly. It's just too much work for too little benefit.

all of the unreal tournaments have given the player the option to be right center and left. do some research before making a blanket statment

I was playing my import copy of Monster Hunter Prtable 3rd earleir, and what do you know? Turns out all the characters in that hold their weapons in their left hand. Just thought you might be interested.

Call me silly, but in a lot of third-person shooters, Uncharted 2 for example, can't this be done by pressing L3? I mean, I know it isn't a realistic shift, as you would get hot casings to the face, but he is holding it left handed.

I'm left handed and I really never noticed. By now, I'm so used to seeing the weapon on the right side of the screen that seeing it on the left would just be weird.

Link from LoZ was always lefthanded; they had to flip the controls for Twilight Princess because more people are right-handed and use the Wii remote as such...

the GC version is still lefthanded tho.

and mo-cap and whatnot is not that big of a deal. all animators have to do is flip everything
He's left handed in the GC version because everything is mirrored in the Wii version compared to the GC version, but yeah, you're right, he does tend to be a lefty.

Mario Tennis (not a shooter or a RPG) lets you be left handed, and there are several others. Honestly I don't really care what hands the character use, if I get bored enough to think about it the game can't have been fun from the start.

I'm sure I have played a shooter where you can change your characters hand, can't for the life of me remember what it was though.
You could in Counter Strike, and I am pretty sure you could do so in Bioshock too. I dont see how it can affect the gameplay though. Does it really matter if the main character is left or right handed?

CS 1.6 and it USED to be in CSS (not sure about now) but you could switch to left handed!

What? That's just balls, there's always been left handed sword fighters. Granted difficulty with mass battles (ie: shield walls) but there always has.

ON ANOTHER NOTE the british SA80 is a solely right handed weapon as opposed to the american M16s which you can 'switch' so that the casings are ejected the other way.

I remember Sam Fisher was ambidextrous. And I remember you could be left-handed in Demon's Souls (or at least you could hold a sword in your left hand and a shield in your right).

I'm sure this has always been mentioned but one of the most iconic gaming heroes of all time is left-handed!
