Because writing in video games is pretty terrible? That could explain quite a few things in fact X_X

I don't really believe that any of that even applies to Lightning (FF13), so I question whether you've played the game at all (or for longer than a few hours). FF13 certainly has stronger character development than any other game in the series. Hope was the "angsty" one, and even he got over it eventually.

Though I get the feeling you are mainly talking about JRPGs and that's far from the truth, sure a lot of them do have those kinds of characters (You can blame the success of FFVII and its brooding protagonist) Many JRPGs also have pretty upbeat or well rounded personality characters in them.
I didn't mean it for every game I just see it is a recurring trend
