I could probably write a thesis on why censorship of an R-rated game makes no sense, so i'm going to summerise it into a list of points.

1) Everything else in Australian has an R classification, from books (more comics then books), right through to music and movies, we know by this that its not the principle of "Violence is Bad" that the government hates, its the fact that they are pretty much spastics.

2) If anything, R movies should be banned rather than games, violence in a game context is much easier to notice, where as to days movies, it can be very difficult to tell whats fake and what isn't, this problem doesn't come up with games (unless your blind, in which case u cant play games or watch movies)

3) I think we can all agree that games have got about as violent as they are ever going to get, from slicing up people with the Lancer in Gears of War, to the head splattering glory of the new Saw game, both of these games see violence up the ass, as well as plenty others, another point is that both these games are violent towards what are clearly human characters, but Left 4 Dead 2 has been condemned by the Australian government as a gory splatter fest, calling the games violence "Heavy and Unrelenting", my answer to this is a big "WHO GIVES A SHI*", so the violence has been ramped up a bit from L4D1 to L4D2, it still looks basically the same, and occurs just as often, except for the pipe bomb explosions, and all they did was make it 50 times more awesome.

Although I think censorship in general makes no sense, it was the eventual violence trimming in L4D2 that prompted me to write this lengthy thread, i've experienced both the R rated and the MA version of the game, and the MA version is a complete and utter joke, after 1 day of trying the demo on steam i quickly got a refund on my pre-order, and am now in the stage of faking my way to a UK copy, email me at pudge_player1110@yahoo.com.au if you too want a guide on how to get a UK copy of the game via steam.

I don't know enough about the Australian censorship policies to make a clear decision on it. All I know is from second hand information from fellow gamers which, I hate to admit, is biased from the beginning.

Because our government is a bunch of pansies. For eg, I don't see how killing zombies in L4D is any different then killing zombies in Carmageddon. But still, I don't complain. Just gives us an excuse to pirate overseas games.

why did this need a poll, not everything needs one this could need explanations more than a simple yes or no

with that out of the way I don't agree with how they censor things I do agree with how they are giving a damn about there gamees they really could use a system like ESRB with it they could at least get more games and a fair rating

Although I agree in principle (in that I want an R rating for games here in Australia), please don't contact the government about it. The reasons why are in bold.

To LeonHellsvite: the fact is that they DONT care, if they cared they would censor all R rated things, rather than just games, they think by censoring it they can claim the 'Moral High Ground' which is ultimatly, good in the polling booth

To Avykins: Australia is a democracy, not a dictatorship, and as long as it remains that way it is the peoples country, not the governments

Our government just has outdated ideals (no doubt because of its conservative nature).

Once some younger folks go into politics, I assure you, there will be change.

That said, the whole 'censorship' thing isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be; the only game affected is L4D2, and someone already made a gore fix within days of release.

At least, I heard a convo about it during a game of TF2.

EDIT: I am, of course, referring to the demo. The actual game will be fixed pretty quick smart.

Gotta love the internet.

I wanna see someone in power who is under 50. My thoughts is that no one in parliment has ever played a video game so they have no idea how to treat it.

yeah its crap that games don't get an 18+ rating like all other media here. Its because they still think of games as only being played by kids and they think interactive violence is worse then passive violence. The previous govt commissioned a report into gaming which found the majority of gamers were men aged 20-35. This wasn't the result they wanted so they ignored it.

<a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/18.144722.3256690>I direct you here. I'm getting a reply very soon :D

If you don't like it, do what I did and write a letter to someone who can change something. The worst that can happen is that they don't read it. At least you will have tried.

Interestingly, our OFLC just dropped the 15+ requirement for M-rated movies. So now it's perfectly fine to take your toddler to whatever violent movie you want. Just don't try to play any video games that have adult concepts, even though the average age of gamers down here is 28.

Although I agree with your point, your arguments are flawed. Try ommiting point 2, and heavily editing point 3.

I'm undecided. I understand why they'd do it, but I still think its bad.

I choose to not take sides usually.

The root of the problem is that games are still considered very much kids toys by those who do not play them. Hell, my folks watch me play Call of Duty and then have the cheek to say I should have grown out of this years ago.

I'm all for ratings, kids should not be playing these ultra violent games. But banning a game because it's not suitable for under eighteens?... I'M 21 DAMN IT!!!!. I HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO PLAY THAT GAME!!!
