Its called Rebuild of Evangelion.
I own the first two, and I've never heard that title.

They're called Evangelion 1.11 and Evangelion 2.22 (in the US).
Really? Cause Loop Stricken's post you quoted yourself also referred to it as that.

The project of remaking the series as movies is called Rebuild of Evangelion, the two movies so far are titled Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, and Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance.
In Japan, yes.

In America (or, you know, wherever else they get dubbed) they have the titles I mentioned (and subtitles reading "You Are (Not) Alone" and "You Can (Not) Advance" as you mentioned).

I just never heard them called "Rebuild" before.

Edit: And I was too lazy to mention it in my previous post. Didn't mean to call you out specifically - you were just the easiest to quote.
I just looked it up, they're called the same thing in America. The 1.11 and 2.22 just means you got releases of it on either DVD or Blueray that fix some stuff and added a couple extra minutes that the theatrical and original home releases didn't have. As for the Rebuild thing, well that's just for the series of movies overall so I guess they didn't bother including it on anything. Since unlike a TV series, a series of movie sequels don't need an official name.

Sorry, I never meant to imply that you were wrong, just that I was unfamiliar with the title and was confused by everyone using it all of a sudden. I mentioned owning the disks (on Blueray) because I wanted to demonstrate that I was an actual fan, not some random person with access to Wikipedia. My comment was more confusion than accusation, but re-reading, I can see how you might have thought that. Hence my apology for implying such - it was not my intent.

My opinion of the ending? It was terrible. Why? Because it did not resolve any of the plot threads of the series. Even LOST and Twin Peaks (both of which are also great, confusing shows with endings typically regarded as less than spectacular) at least brought the main plot threads to a somewhat satisfying end. NGE just felt like it stopped. Nothing got resolved at all. To add insult to injury, they chose to focus the last two episodes on the worst character of the series. The combination of those two elements (along with smaller complaints like the crappy animation and the near absence of the EVAs/Angels) made me hate it.

I can only say I watched it and I didn't,t really understood it. It was all a big mind rape and everything was confusing (The End of the Evangelion was a bit less mind rapy and better to understand)

You know what annoys me about these threads.

"I didn't understand Eva so it sucked."

Really, you think something's bad because you're too dumb to understand it?

I respect the people who dislike the characters - they are still missing the point, but it's a valid reason to not enjoy watching a show. The people too lazy to think just piss me off.

Evangelion (any version) is high art. If you're too lazy to pay attention and think, then go watch something else and stop complaining about it. For those smart enough to follow the nuance, it is a powerful and moving piece of literature.
Don't you mean art? I mean, literature is written down. Although I suppose the manga constitutes literature... Wow, I'm more sleep-deprived than I thought!

Anyhoo, yeah put me down as lazy and stupid if you want. I'm not good at watching/reading things like NGE; I tend to drop into deep depression, questioning the meaning of life, and end up not showering for 2 weeks because what's the point, until my sister comes by and prods me back to life.

This is why I stick to happy things like MLP mostly. Or to books/films where my psyche doesn't get too heavily involved in the dark bits. My brain is damaged as it is o_O

I'll admit I enjoyed the manga. Only read up until volume 6, but I liked it. They killed off my favourite character though and I lost interest by the time volume 7 came out. Not to mention I was broke.

I'm gonna stop rambling now. *stumbles off to bed*

Sure, and don't worry I didn't take it as that.

Also here is the best description of the series I have seen, if you have watched the series and feel lost reading this you need to rewatch the crap out of it.

I watched all 26 episodes of the anime, although I didn't terribly enjoy it. I was mildly annoyed with most of the characters, but not enough to really bother me. Shinji on the other hand can go fuck off. I hated him all the way through the series, and there are very few characters I just plain hate, but he managed to be one of them. But I digress, the ending is the topic of discussion here.

Gainix ran out of money and it shows. They were in a hurry to try and wrap everything up and it just didn't work for me. It just felt like a bit of cop out to me, and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe the movies explain it better. I don't know because I really have no desire to see them.

I'm not a big symbolism person though. Unless i'm really into something I don't look to deep into it.

Well I loved the ending in both the show and the film, but to be fair... they flat out ran of budget at the end, so a lot of people couldn't help feeling disappointed.

Also, you get into some deep stuff by the end, so if you don't get it XD I can definitely see how it could just seem like nonsense.

edit: XD that poll is a bit of a trap. I said no thinking the poll was "did you hate the ending", when it's actually "Did you like it?"

I don't know Yani, a lot of it seems like someone telling a really bad joke, then screaming how I was an idiot because I didn't think it was funny. Maybe I can sum up better, it's like telling a joke that isn't funny, then being offended that no one laughed...when we were all just waiting to hear a joke.

I don't know, it's 3:30 in the morning and I hated that show.

I can barely remember what happened but it was that standard anime thing to do, some uber mindfuckery that adds more questions and explains nothing about the series and roll credits.
It's evil genius, keeps people wanting more :D

I'm guessing those creators don't even know what the silver lining is suppose to be, they just pile up mystery after mystery and in the end noone has a clue how to tie it together, then you can do the Lost thing and try to explain badly or just leave it all hanging in mystery and keep the fans guessing.

I liked the original ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion. I'm not, however, going to claim that it's a good ending. In fact, even though NGE is one of my favorite works of dramatic fiction of all time, in all honesty, it has some pretty serious flaws (one of them the ending).

However, here's why I liked it: it did a good job resolving the character arcs. No, we don't get to see what actually happens in the real world (for that, we have EoE). It leaves the giant-robots-beating-the-shit-out-of-trippy-monsters element out by the side of the road, but that's not why I loved NGE so much. If your primary concern with NGE is the robots vs angels element, in my opinion, you're not watching the right show. I loved the action arc, but even though it's masterfully done, it serves primarily as a lead in to the rest of the series. As a resolution to that, the ending really does suck. However, as you all know, they didn't have enough money to give the story a proper ending and properly resolve the character arcs. Given a choice between the two, they chose exactly right.

Which leads to the next point: yes, the ending is cheaply animated. It's a lot of still frames, sketches, and montage. And you know what? In my opinion, that's all they needed, because it works. It takes Eisenstein's montage theory of building images on top of each other to create an overall thematic picture, and does some really cool and creative stuff with it. Tsurumaki and Anno are both masters at framing shots and building sequences in a way that - at least to me - was quite visceral.

Of course, there's the flawed pseudo-philosophical existentialism, but that really wasn't such a big roadblock for me. There is a philosophical message in Evangelion, but it's about the human condition and how we see ourselves and interact with each other, not any of the poorly constructed stuff in the ending that, taken out of context, one might believe the ending to be about.

In case I haven't stated my position clearly enough, I like the ending, but it isn't in and of itself "deep stuff" for the reason people seem to think it is. The people who hear the "deep stuff" as nonsense are right: it is nonsense. That's not to say, however, that the ending, along with NGE as a whole, don't say some pretty deep things.

I also don't get where all the talk about religious symbolism comes from. The religious symbolism doesn't exist. It looks cool; it's a visual motif, just like we use greek and other classical religions as motifs all the time. Anno, Sadamoto, and Tsurumaki all said so.

That said, someone (specifically Zac Bertschy, on ANNcast) once raised the point that a show about building robots to challenge the judeo-christian god would be pretty epic. I'm inclined to agree.

Anyway, I'm not trying to convince the people who didn't like the ending to like it, or even to convince people that it's even a good ending, but I hope I've explained well enough why I personally loved every last second of it.

TL;DR: I loved it, other people don't; we both have good reasons...but I'm still right ^_^

PS: On the other hand, I do have problems with EoE, but that's neither here nor there. Either way, I can't wait for Rebuild 3.0 and 4.0.

I think Gainax did the best they could with what they had at that moment. Could it have been better? Sure. But they didn't have a lot of budget and they had to make due with what they had. And I think they did well enough.

That doesn't mean the ending of the series was in any way conclusive though. During the last few episodes the main characters were being either physically or psychologically tortured, but at the end of episode 24 it just cut off from these events and never really follows up on it.
So obviously I was pretty steamed that Gainax just left me in the dark like that after I had gotten so invested in the characters and the universe of this show. Though, back then I didn't even know about the budget problems at all.

For me the worst part of the last 2 episodes were...

...those two quick shots of Misato and Ritsuko lying dead without any explaination of why they died or what killed them.

And then having to wait untill the release of End of Evangelion to find out what the fuck that meant.

Still, I love the show and I love the characters (even Shinji).

Are we counting the two movies as the ending, or the last 2 episodes? I was quite satisfied with the movies. They wrapped everything up and ended the series in a very interesting way. The last 2 episodes, however, were terrible. It was like if every war movie and cop show contained the main character's debriefing in its entirety.

This isn't the producer's fault, because of the budget issues and all, but the episodes were pretty disappointing.

I watched the movie ending and STILL hated it.

And I just saw this shitty ending LAST WEEK.

It's bullshit philosophical crap that doesn't even wrap up it's own story. The movie was going well making up for it...until the half-way point. >_>

Like I said, I agree that for it to have been an objectively good ending, it would have had to have shown more than Shinji and company trying to make sense of themselves. The point I was trying to make was that, given their options, they chose the right one, and that I loved it anyway, but I definitely see where you're coming from. In my opinion, EoE does the opposite, and is actually worse off for it. Only by combining the narrative of EoE and the character development of the series ending can one get a full picture of what was happening. This, of course, is hugely stupid, and fans like me would never accept it from any lesser series, but at least Rebuild might handle it better.
Casual Shinji said:
Precisely.

Anyway, I probably should have mentioned this before, but it seems like your acceptance of the ending is almost directly proportional to how much you're invested in the characters. Someone who thinks Shinj is emo, Asuka is a *****, and Rei is fap material probably aren't going to accept two episodes of these people having what amounts to giant, trippy, post-modern group therapy. I might even go as far to say that if you only like the characters as much as those on any other show, the ending still wouldn't be very effective.
