I did the research bar routine and I couldn't believe nobody here made exactly this question yet. I see a good part of the escapists are or more frequently like me were WoW players at some point.

With me it all started more then 5 years ago. I am a Blizzard fan, specially a warcraft RTS series fan. I always loved the games and the lore behind it. When WoW was announced I was looking forward to try it. My main curiosity (that would also reveal to be my doom and hook me so much into the game that made me waste a good chunk of my life) was to see and how the series universe would be converted to what I think is exactly the opposite genre of strategy games.

By then I had played for 10 years in the perspective of a warchief or even a God shaping the world and running armies into epic fights. How would my experience be in that beloved fantastic world as a "puny little insect" lost in multitudes of endless heroes, with no power to influence anything at all or almost anything, in a way having the experience through the eyes of a character that otherwise would be just another unit in a vast army.

What is your story?

I gues it's a mix of being a warcraft series fan and my friends playing it.

I played Warcrafts 2 and 3, so of course I had to play WoW. I got out eventually, but I was really into it for a while.

My friends played on a private server and said it was cool. I got the game as well but after a while we all decided to just friggin pay and join the main servers.
I more or less enjoyed the game up till a few years ago..I uninstalled it and threw it into the attic for over a year. WotLK came out and things where fun again..till the achievements crap popped up.
In TBC only a few people where arrogant with their gear. Now you have to have achievements and gear score to do the fun stuff. Up to the attic you go you stupid game lol

I had a free trial for it so I tried to use that, it wouldn't work for some reason so I just though fuck and bought the actual thing. I really got into it and was playing it for about 3/4 years before I had to take a break due to being poor =[

I used to enjoy the old RTS games when I was younger. Then I saw that WoW had a free trial so I played it, didn't like it too much but was interested in the world and all the people so I got the game and played a while, and got bored really quickly. Six months after that I decided to give it another chance and I got into it. I think I'm level 77 now and will most likely renew once more news of the expansion comes in.

One of my friends was playing it, so I gave it a bash. It was fun until either I or my friend didn't play for a while and we had to quest alone. After a while I just said "fuck it" and I quit.

I wanted to see what it was like, I played it for a month straight. Probably the least fun I've had with any game, just relentless tedium through and through. I concurred that I wasn't missing much and never touched it again.

And to all those people who say "WoW doesn't start till level ##", I don't have that kind of time, and neither should you!
Your absolutly right, though I wish I had realized this much sooner than I did

I was lording up Final Fantasy 11 and heard a couple of college friends were starting to play World of Warcraft since it came out (On release day), I got the game the day after and joined em playing it.

Been on and off ever since. None of them have played for a good 2 years now though...

Loved the RTS's. Played to continue the story. Realized the story was gone. Stopped playing.

Because I'm a boring person with a boring life and lost of money to spend on random things. No, no wait that was a dream I had.

I played it because someone told me it was a fun game, and a place to RP. For those of you who don't know what RP stands for, it stand for RolePlaying. For those of you who don't know what that is. That's what your parents do behind locked do-- I mean writing a story with other people through the eyes of a character.

The people lied and WoW was fun for only a little while, or at least until the patch decided my laptop wasn't good enough to fucking finish.

I had played quite a bit of Warcraft 2/3 and StarCraft and Diablo 2, so I was pretty familiar with Blizzard's work. And I had been into MMOs for a while, notably with Ragnarok Online. I basically got converted by a friend, and was going to pick up WoW come Burning Crusade, since my RO guild was slowly dying. But then everyone just kinda quit, I picked up WoW right away, and have been playing it off and on since. The friend who got me to play doesn't play it much anymore, but I run with a different group I met in game when I do activate my account.

I got into WOW cause of W1-2-3 series and loved it. I don't have time for raiding anymore soon as real life caught up with me and have too many things to do at the moment.

I just found out that leveling is one of the things I actually enjoy in this game . I can do it when I want and I feel like a noob again when I start a new class . I really enjoy taking it slow now and doing one quest at the time , reading the story , I really enjoy it .

its a mixture of both friends playing it and the fact that i loved the RTS games.and you know,WOW was fun untill blizzard made everything SO EASY! my god, they've dummed it down so much that there is nothing fulfilling about it anymore.i remember that it was hard to understand at first, but once you had your head around it was was easy and flow-y and worked very well.but now their turning it into "base stats only" like wtf? i had no problem with spell power, atk power, parry rating, ect ect stats.it added that bit of complexity cause you had to figure out just how much 5 "parry rating" really is compared to agility.i liked having to use my BRAIN to figure out my stats and what were suitable upgrade for myself.and when they introduced the new gem system they even dummed that down! for the love of god red to red and blue to blue please! its not like when your a kid with a puzzle and you cant figure it out so you just jammed the pieces in.why can i add ANY color gem to ANY color slot (not including meta)? i shouldnt be able to do that,it should tell me that the gem and slot DOES NOT MATCH! i dont want to be running on only the 6 (i think 6,its been a while) basic stats.i want variety! i want some complexity to my games.if im gonna play a MMO i want more then a mindless hack and slash.i want to use my brain! i want not only a challenge on a physical level but also a intellectual level from my MMO.i get a better sense of accomplishment when i get that out of a game.WOW was like that, but not anymore.blizz fucked that one up big time.also while im at it,why the fuck are the horde getting palli cows? (cant remember the races name for the life of me) last i checked they were in-tune with NATURE not the LIGHT! then again Dwarves are gonna be mages so WTF!?!?! and that is why i joined (and then left) World of Warcraft! if on the slight chance that Blizzard realizes their mistake i may comeback.but until then ill be in SC2 and Diablo 3...if they dont fuck them up too....

After avoiding it for quite a while due to not wanting to get hooked on another MMO after I'd quit Everquest, a friend finally talked me into tryin a trial.

About a month later I'd completely passed his characters and was on my way to the level cap.

He quit long before I did. :| Fortunately I made other friends and had a lot of fun for quite a while. Finally put the game down last August. It had lost its appeal, I felt like I'd done most everything I had set out to do, and only one of my friends was still playing. No longer merited the repeat fee.

After being off Everquest for so long and leaving the army after an imuplsive choice to only do Basic Training and quit, it seemed like a nice escape. Seeing as how my brother had recently got burned out and quit, I figured I'd take over just to get my feet wet. Little did I know that it'd steal a couple years of my life though. But, in the end, I doubt I'd change anything. Games worth trying are tried. It's just too bad the lore that I'd come to like a lot from the RTS series has been bent over the barrel these last few expansions. It's no wonder they're coming up with a new IP for their next MMO.
