Heavy metal is just sound to my ears, but that's my opinion. I'm not entitled to put it above the opinions of anybody else.
I'm pretty sure that any genre of music can be considered sound but maybe that's just me.
I'm pretty sure that he means that it's just a bunch of random sounds, thrown together and called music.
Arent all music just random sounds thrown together? ;)
Erm...no? I'm pretty sure the mere existence of musical theory disproves that.

While not into metal as much as I used too, I do enjoy some bands. Black Metal is pretty lulzy, but that's cause their fandom is ridiculous. This is a decent(Black Metal) song.
The fact they played with an orchestra is a plus.

And as for stuff I truly enjoy. Some melodic death metal

Well, we can agree that a note is a sound yes? If you take a note and put it together with another note, you get music right? Therefore all music is random sound put together.

Here i thought i was funny :(

I like Power Metal and Speed Metal because they're very melodic-sounding and often have very complex, interesting composition. Death Metal just sounds all the same to me. Maybe I haven't listened to enough to hear the distinct nuances between bands, but all I hear is throat-screaming and too many distorted guitars.

I remember seeing this band a few years back that had no drummer, no bassist...just four guitarists. And I'm like...really guys? Your awesomeness doesn't increase proportionate to the number of dudes you have playing power chords really fast <_<

Error.
IF 'Random' = no composition
AND 'put together' = composition
THEN 'Put together' ≠ 'random'

Depends on the notes you pick. Even if you pick the notes randomly there will be implications of musical keys arising out of it.

I don't like it because I generally don't like the sounds of guttural screaming inherent to the genre. For some reason, I seem to have the insane notion that I ought to be able to understand lyrics without consulting the album liner.

Understandability really depends on the skill of the singer. People such as Johann Hegg (Amon Amarth) is very understandable and uses alot of the same techniques used in Opera. A good death growl that won't blow out your vocal cords takes alot of skill, doubly so to sing well while doing it like Hegg does.

That's like saying I can throw any random pieces of scrap metal together and get an Aston Martin instead of a pile of scrap metal.

Random sounds put together to form 'music' would be me mashing my hand on a keyboard and calling it a song. I think most people know this is not how music is written.

While nothing quite that crude there are plenty of methods for creating music out of randomness.

This still does not resolve the "I don't care for how screaming sounds" part. I've nothing but respect for the musical abilities of many metal bands. They show some of the greatest skill with their respective instruments that one is ever likely to see. But the problem is that, when one's accompaniment is as high intensity as it is, the singer isn't left with many options as to how they will present their part. The screaming thing seems to be the natural result of the accompaniment. And, no matter how awesome said accompaniment is, I just really don't care for the sound of someone screaming.

Ahem, i can sit down right now on my pc, put together a whole bunch of random sounds, burn it on a disc and sell it. Aslong as i can find one idiot willing to buy it, i can call it music.

And yes, you can take a scrapheap of metal and put them together to get an Aston Martin. As a metal fabricator by trade i can tell you, if you know how to manipulate the metal, you can get any shape you want ;)

But by god, i really underestimated peoples abillity to spot a joke.........

I don't consider myself much of a metalhead, and its hardly my genre by choice, but im more than happy to admit that bands like Iron Maiden and Apocalyptica are some of the best bands ever. I guess one reason its not popular is because 90% of the time, lyrics in metal songs are unrelatable with the listener, for example The Trooper by Iron Maiden. Im probably going to get some dedicated metalhead prove me wrong here, but compared to Punk or Ska, it holds little angst.

I like metal. But only in a weird way where I enjoy the sound but can't take the content seriously.

I quote some lyrics from Nymphetamine Overdose (Cradle Of Filth)...
"Six feet deep is their incision
In my heart, that barless prison
Discolours all with tunnel vision"

Almost poetic. (In a middle-school type of way) It's talking about being addicted to a woman's love so much that it brings him back from the dead (only to be returned there when she's finished with him).

Deep, but it's just kinda funny in a way.

1) Wall of sound
B) Hard to follow if you don't concentrate on it.

Same reasons most people don't like pure jazz, really.

People hate metal because metallers are egotistical, elitist, arrogant morons who are probably more closed minded then the people they spend all their time whining about.
They also take themselves and their music way too seriously.
That and the fact that metal gigs/venues are so clique-y its unbelieveable. I felt like an outsider all my life within the metal crowd, it was only when i started getting into drum n bass that i found myself actually having a good time and meeting good people at gigs.

That and the fact that its not an easily accessable genre of music to get into, and the metallers dont help that fact by being so ignorant and intolerant of people with tastes that differ from their own.

Rant over.

Is it possible to take anything about Cradle of Filth seriously? =p
