Well, what did you think of the original's? I felt like the vehicles in Halo: CE handled very awkwardly, especially when turning and stopping. Halo 2, 3, ODST and Reach felt smoother.

Fun fact: I've played Half-Life, all of the Doom games, classic Wolfenstein, Serious Sam, Duke Nukem, Quake, Deus Ex, Thief, System Shock 2, Halo, etc.

And out of that list, you know how many of those games I've actually completed? Halo. ... and Star Wars: Dark Forces II, but that's because you get to be a Jedi.

It's almost like there are actually people out there who *gasp, shock, horror* might not actually care about whether your character zooms around at eighty miles an hour, flipping between an entire armory strapped to the void on their back or not!
So you're the an exception to the rule. Feeling special? Most people who played classic shooters like Half-Life expect more from their shooters, I guess you're not.
Expecting much more like... What? I realise Half-Life came out long before Halo did, and was more of a classic, but just saying "expect more" is a really vague way to put it. I can see how you could say that Halo "had less" in comparison to things like System Shock 2 or Deus Ex, but those two are known as pretty much the best PC games ever, so saying that Halo isn't as good as them isn't much of an insult to it. I can't really think of anything Halo was lacking that Half Life had, though.

But seriously, expect more what?

Well, CE was the only Halo I didn't play so I missed that problem.

Well you're not missing out on much then :)

The vehicles sections only seem to appear at the beginning of a mission or for a few minutes at a time (excluding the final mission which you would recognise if you played the last mission of Halo 3).

I found the final mission of 3 pretty awesome though :D. Especially in co-op where you can really mess with the other player.

More environment types, more weapons (different weapons for different purposes, not ones that make others useless), better working mechanics, more room for exploration, more original plot. Again not saying that it's the worst, I'm saying that it's mediocre and doesn't have anything special about it to distinguish it from others.

Halo is the only pure multiplyaer FPS left I buy and play. Because I need one for when I just want to play a game that's quick and doesn't require any thinking.

What made it my choice was the Sci-fi theme of it, rather than the modern military theme of CoD/MW/MH.

And the story is better than those games ... but thats not saying to much, it's still pretty bad, but not so bad I wont complete it. Plus all Forerunner/Covenant bases, ships, tech and superweapons in the stories make the story pretty at least. Though they still managed to keep everything human grey, black and brown.

Yeah it was pretty good, it's Halo 1 equivalent probably the best usage of vehicles in the game and also has a nice little plot moment midway involving the Halo 1 equivalent of Foehammer.

Halo was both critically acclaimed and popular among consumers. However, I see nothing special about the series. Even Halo:Reach, which was in my eyes easily the strongest of the series, seemed a bit weak for the 10/10 reviews it was getting. I would like to hear from both people who do like Halo and those who don't in this thread.
For me the height of Halo was on 2 and after that it became mediocre

The first game had a pretty interesting world and levels that felt atmospheric, while 2 had an extraordinary fun multiplayer and some interesting background on the covenant as well as the arbiter

After that the games got kinda eh with the story and the magic of being part of a cultural juggernaut that was Halo 2 was gone.

Anyone else starting to think that the "Why do people like X" threads we've seen lately are being done by the same person?

Because it appeals to some people. I find My Little Pony nothing short of a ten year old girl's show. Yet fully grown men are going on about it being a fantastic show. Why do people feel the need to completely understand something they don't understand?

*shrugs* i got no idea, i played the original on PC and didn't get why it was so great... i liked the Flood, but then again i'm a fan of ALIENS and the Tyranids from WH40k so that just opened up a whole other level 'fun' guessing games and scifi horror...

i pretty much blew it off as a series since my primary experience was a 'meh' ALIENS wannabe game that didn't have the balls to be really gritty or Star Trek knock-off that didn't get the memo about being 'nice' with the alien speices in the universe, take your pick... and i was dragged to a house full of 10 guys on fridays to 'play' LAN games when i had no idea how to operate an Xbox controller and they literally just dropped me in a game with nothing and the name 'Lag'... *clicks tongue* yep, rain of granades!! :D

i think the only time i gave it any credit was when my GIRLfriend/roommate in the Navy went OFF on me for calling it lame... i got to enjoy 5-6hrs of her ranting about the complexity of the story, the back story, the books, the universe, and i really by the end of it i thought it'd be interesting if THAT was what i was getting when playing and not... Halo .-.

suffice it to say Reach gave her an anurism and she finally understood why i had a deep hatred for the AVP movies...

honestly, its only good as a PvP thing in my opinion or meh co-op... as me and her blew up horde after horde of supped up goons after she beat it to make her feel better... but as a 'game' or story in general *shrugs* don't see why its that great when there's other stuff out there that's done it better .-.

maybe its just the supersolider idea that's not space marines *shrugs* and shiny?

It's just the quintessential multiplayer fantasy shooter. Nothing special about it, except being an exclusive so Xbox owners try to make PS users jealous.

Its a really tight game.
I used to enjoy the story and campaigns, but those have been pretty skimpy lately. Still, it has great multiplayer and some interesting weapons and vehicles.
I personally stopped caring for the series after Halo 3. 1 and 2 were great in my mind, but everything after (except Reach) has been rather boring. Especially 4.

I love Halo personally, this is a pretty lousy justification, but everything just works for me. It's a simple arcade style shooter that is fun to play. I don't care much for the multilayer, but I find the campaigns as short as they might be, very fun and re-playable. The colorful presentation is nice, music is great, the developers make great battlefields especially the larger "do what you feel like ones." The guns are fun and varied, (although the promethean weapons were pretty uninspired), and the design choices are really well thought out.

Just like the Uncharted thread that just popped up, it's all opinion, I have a blast with Halo, not everyone does, and that's cool. I do recommend the series to anyone who still hasn't tried it yet.

Because it's fun.....It's really that simple I guess. The multiplayer is fun as well especially spartan ops and zombie mode.

Edit: Unfortunately, I have no intention of getting a Xbox one, so I may end up missing the sequels if they don't come to PC.

Half Life isen't really THAT good shooter, nor puzzle-game. Its so called "mysteries" brings people to call it "deep" and such, but it doesn't really have much to give. Slow gameplay, bland visuals and unplayable multiplayer, unless its modded.

Halo CE on the other hand, sold the Xbox to the people ;)

I loved the original Halo, and because of the massive innovations it brought to console shooters I sort of became loyal to the franchise. I wouldn't count any of them among my favourite games, but I always come back to them.

The criticism that gets thrown at Halo is that is is a generic shooter, offering nothing new and never evolving it's gameplay. I would say that's half-true. It definitely doesn't evolve it's gameplay ever. It even regressed when it came to Reach, when they purposefully scaled it back so it was more like Halo: CE. However when people call it a "generic" console shooter...

Well yeah I guess it is, but it invented that.

It feels generic now and if you go back and play the first one to "see what all the fuss is about" you will be disappointed. That's because the reason it feels generic now is because every other shooter initially tried to be Halo, and because of that, being like Halo is essentially what it means to be a shooter on consoles. Like it or not, Halo is probably the most influential shooter there is, at least when talking exclusively about consoles.

Its much more accessible than most shooters. SHotguns are called shotguns, pistols are pistols, gravity hammers are gravity hammers. The story actually damn exists, and the universe is surprisingly expansive. It has a clear health bar, an accessible HUD, large open environments, and an AI that can carry its own weight.

Plus, have you seen the ragdoll physics?

While I'm not a fan of the games, it's a FPS and I don't do those, I like the back story and lore surrounding it, but that's pretty much it. If it wasn't an FPS and Xbox only I'd probably be all about it like many others, but *shrugs* least its more interesting on the whole then Half-Life, now there's a game I'll never under stand why people like.
