1. a text is less immediate than a phone call. You can text them and even if they can't reply straight away, your question/statement/whatever is still there, waiting for them. No need to try remember what it was you were going to phone them about.

2. Nobody can hear what you're saying.

3. It's easier to think of replies because you don't have the pressure of the other person sitting listening to you breathing while you think.

4. tends to be a lot cheaper than phoning. I get unlimited texts but only 200 minutes of calls. Unless I have something important to say that requires them to hear it right it right that minute, I'll text them whatever it is.

It's popular because most of modern society has the attention span of goldfish and have to have instant contact gratification at all times.

Cell phones can die in a fire, my phone plugs into the wall and stays in one place.

I really like being able to be legitimately out of contact from time to time.

i don't have a cellphone, and don't want to have one. I feel more free that way.

ps: i already had one for a year, and felt i didn't had the need.

Because people don't want to hear the other's voices?

Or maybe because they're lazy.

Or maybe, just maybe, its just a stupid trend that will hopefully die down.

I hate texting. It's annoying, takes too long and costs too much.

I prefer texting because it allows me time to think of a response I dont think well on my feet, even when its a simple conversation.

Why do people type replies on forums so often?

Exactly. Think about it and it will come to you.

Because it's fun to talk to other people around the world about different topics and we're using keyboards that lets us use all our fingers unlike cellphones.

About a couple of years ago, I decided I got fed up with my phone and threw it in a drawer for six months. Only the fact that I got a new job made me pull it back out. Ah... those were some of the happiest days of my life.

I can do without texting, and consider it overrated. If I want to talk to my friends, I'll either call them, or go to our local pub. Which they conviniently own.

i text because its easier to read then to make out wat a person is saying on the phone
it also lets me start and pickup a conversation anytime i want
pictures are also a plus.
ps. nice avatar
What follows is my exact reaction to reading your post:
Yeah, that's true.
Heh, I was going to put that.
Hey, wait a minute...
You freaking mind reader!

No, seriously, how the hell did you do that?

OT: I text quite often because my friend text me quite often and it seems easier than just calling them back. I understand why people hate it, but it never really got on my nerves, except when people can't tell that I'm being sarcastic.

no, because it's easier to make statements and talk through text than speaking to someone miles away on a pair of a speaker and microphone.

Humans aren't meant to talk on phones. It's difficult for us because we read body language and smells and all sorts of stuff when with a person and can't do that on the phone.

Texting however gives us time to interpret what the other person is saying.

I text a lot. I mean a lot. I have my phone next to me right now.

I text bitches and my weed man. Seriously, he doesn't like being on the phone either.

Texting is pretty hassle free, and it lets me not get too involved in a conversation so I can multitask. Like post and text or do homework and text.

Mad props for the Boondocks clip. I love that show.

I send that ***** a smiley face... Bitches love smiley faces

Talking on the phone consists of dialing the number, waiting for someone to pick up, all the formalities of saying "hello" and "goodbye", all in the name of talking for about 20 seconds. When they don't answer, you have to leave a message, which in turn makes that person have to call their voicemail and sit through a menu before selecting the option to delete it after listening to whatever you have to say.

Texting is quick, to the point, and non-intrusive. Plus, the person doesn't have to even be near the phone and they will eventually get the message.

I don't use it. Period. It's a step back in communication. We have gotten to the point where you can send a live video feed across the world over the internet to communicate. It's now so cheap to hold a live audio conversation that the cellphone has become ubiquitous. Texting is a throw back to older communication skills. If we need asynchronous communication, we can get emails which can more easily transfer other data, like pictures and programs. This we can also get on cellphones at a similar level as the constant voice communication. Texting is nothing more than a way to gouge for more money to use an archaic communication method. Unfortunately my friends text me, so I have the old style AOL dial up sound effect for my incoming texts.

I tend to stutter a lot.
So texting lets me say witty things without ruining the novelty with my shyness

Alright so this question popped in my mind from seeing people texting everywhere I go, whether it be in college or anywhere I go to I always see people spending so much time texting when they could have just said what they were typing in 10 seconds. My feelings about texting can be best explained in the video below, now just so you know I don't think people are stupid for texting I'm just flabbergasted on why people text so much everyday.

This may be waaaay off topic but I am still kicking myself over never watching this show! Every clip I see of The Boondocks gets me laughing, why did no one ever alert me of its existence until long after it left?

And on topic: Some people text, some people talk. And some people have an illogical crippling fear of phones (yours truly).

Well humans aren't meant to text either,I still think talking on the phone is more efficient you can hear the tone of their voice and sense their emotion unlike texting which half the time I don't know when a person is mad, being sarcastic, or being serious, but that's just me whatever works better to either of us.

No, because a forum is a place where we can exchange ideas from varying viewpoints and grow as a culture. We use a text based format because A) it takes less data than video or audio and holding a large conversation between multiple points across the world would strain internet connections B) because it keeps statements up for a longer period of time so that multiple people can comment on the same post C) Having 30+ people talking at the same time gets confusing and would likely result in people pairing off or forming small groups to discuss a topic which somewhat defeats the purpose of a forum and D) allows people to be grammar nazis more efficiently.
