To have fun should not be an option because everyone plays games for fun but what is it about it that you find so fun?
Personally, I game because I they are a rewarding challenge.

To have fun while doing something that would otherwise be impossible - I avoid games that simulate activities I could feasibly do in the real world like the plague.
I also demand a plot - it could be the barest possible outline, but I won't countenance entirely plotless titles (casual gaming dreck) or the "all multi-player, all the time" nonsense where any single-player content is just multi-player with bots.

I play every simultion game I come across. I play to unwind and have some fun. Gaming is not a lifestyle for me; it's a way to spend time.
This, with what you have said, is a reason I play games. Games are for entertainment. I simply enjoy them for that purpose. But..WayOutThere said:
I see more in games to that matter. I see challenges to overcome. Challenges that I am able to overcome.
If I am not able to overcome a challenge, a little practice makes perfect, and in the end it refines my experience as a gamer overall.
One thing that changes how I look at games are playing with other people, because playing alone makes the experience dull after a while. Sure, in the end I may earn a Big Boss rank in MGS4, get all the stars in Super Mario Galaxy, or gold star all RB songs, but I would have no one to share the experience with if there was no-one around.
Playing with friends and relatives together makes gaming that much better and enjoyable, and playing online makes gaming sweeter. Get friends together, have some fun, and LOL's ensue. That's how I see it.
I play to take my mind of of the real world and the hell that ensues just by being alive. I chose the "Kill people without actually killing people" one because if i wasn't playing video games i might, or should i say would, be doing something else like drugs, which include alcohol, or torturing small animals. That would then lead to the slippery slope of murder 'small' to 'large' to 'human'. Well if you believe that pot is a gateway drug, then killing small creatures is a gateway pass time.
