I just can't get over how every time Anonymous is mentioned, all ye who hear them begin shaking in their proverbial internet boots. Why is this? Why does everyone believe this? Sure, there are anonymous hackers out there that attack consumers, but come on.

Project Chanology? All those times Anonymous has saved abused animals? The group fights censorship and tries it best to keep civil rights, net neutrality, etc., all these acts of literal internet vigilantism, and everyone seems to think they're some kind of internet hate machine. Where do people get their ideas from?

Oh, that must be why.

Why does everyone think that? I don't know, I always thought that some people thought it.

Stop making generalisations.

I don't think of them as evil. I think they are people with things they believe in who go far over the top with their beliefs.

pretty much they're neutral. They fight for freedom of speech above all else, but are dicks at the same time, so they're pretty much central

All those massive trollings on innocent sites? All the death threats and verbal harassments towards the families of people who died?

Anonymous is a group that portrays itself as under a somewhat noble cause and then does everything they can to show that they are far from noble.

As I've said before, they're self righteous internet vigilantes who occasionaly do the right thing.

Why is there no middle ground option? Its not just black and white. Anonymous is a collection of people. The white knights are good people, they're the ones that actually do shit about the abused animals. The rest of them either act like assholes because they think its cool or they actually are assholes. They think they're more important than they really are. Thus when they're not given the attention they believe they deserve, they release some major threat that they never go through with.

Well, I usually don't group together "Righteous People" and "Unknown Hackers on The Internet". I don't think of them as completely evil, but I do judge them on a case-to-case basis.

EDIT: Also, I feel I need to also imply that some "Members" of anonymous really don't do anything besides hind behind the name for some respect. In my original post, I am referring to the ACTUAL members of Anonymous.

Anonymous are lawless, they consider themselves above the law .
Or perhaps they think they might serve as the law where it had failed in protecting the rights of consumers against Sony.
Either way, please don't hack my account.
I voted for neutral .
FOX is looking for some action news, that's it.

Maybe lots of escapists got upset about the Habbo hotel raids? Also as I've always said they're neutral.

They're just random internet trolls for the most part as far as I can tell. They're not really a group with any kind of single goal, they're just a bunch of people who post under the same name.

Because they are, by definition, a chaotic neutral group, and because of this, they do whatever they want and say "screw the rules". This can be good, for the reasons the OP stated. However, that doesn't change the fact that they are also, by definition, cyber terrorists, taking the law into their own hands and doing what they see fit. That's all well and good to some people, but the laws and law enforcement are there for a reason, and believe it or not, the people who enforce those laws don't like to be walked all over by some hackers behind a computer.

I can see why their popular with the younger crowd. They have that "rebellious, we don't take shit from anyone" type of feel to them.

Personally, I don't give two shits about Anonymous. Had it not been for this website, I'd have no idea who they were.

Just my two cents. I'm far from an "Anonymous Expert", so everything I just said could be entirely wrong. Don't really know, don't really care.

Anonymous isn't a group. 'They' don't do anything, members do things, sometimes together. If anon saves a burning orphanage, then a guy saved it and chose to call himself anonymous. If anon burns an orphanage, a guy burned it and chose to call himself anonymous.

Where's the option for thinking they're a loosely affiliated group of internet people who some people think control the world?

Anonymous members are the most awesome people on the internet (and I use "members" in the loosest sense of the word). They will ruin personal lives, hack company networks, and generally irritate the hell out of the rest of the pussies that inhabit the internet in the name of LULZ.

I love these guys.

well i always though they were behind the psn hack
why?
well when the ps3 hack guy (cant remember his name)
hacked the ps3 and sony was on his ass on a lawsuit
anonymous said they would give sony payback for trying to sue someone
that was only using what he bought and they had no right to sue him
it led in the end to anonymous DDOS'ing the psp home and taking down the site for a while
but im not sure since anonymous LOVES bragging when they do something
like a drama queen
its just interesting that they dint claim they did it whitch probably mean they dint do it

back on topic anonymous is evil
but not evil stab stab
evil in the eyes on normal people
maybe because of their methodes and their language
anonymous main role is to protect free speech and have lulz

their main source of attack are DDOS (go check what it is im too lazy to explain)
and hacking
since they have no leader (their like a flock of birds, moving together but no leader)
hope it clears the air

It depends on what they do.

Some times they're decent people. Like with the WBC

Sometimes they're not. Usually they're not. I cant wait to see what happens with this Iran thing, cause if any uprising happens, I'm solely placing the blood of whoever dies on their hands.
