I guess I'm more of a comic guy really, although I've heard there are some good manga and have read a few online. I'm not super into either though, I own a few DC graphic novels, Watchmen, Kingdom Come, Arkham Asylam, and one or two others but that's it.

I think though that what that girl said was out of line. I hate people like that, people who have never read, watched, or done something and feel the need to criticise it. And then she feels the need to be rude about it. Oh well just ignore the little trollop.

And yeah I have met alot of people like that in my life, mostly in High School. People who hated on things for no better reason than they could. Buncha snide punks, glad to be rid of 'em.

I always thought "Manga" and "Comic" were the same. You know, one being a Japanese word the other an English word.

Anyways: Why do you care about that woman? She's full of shit, obviously, will some day die as just another person and history will forget her very soon after her death. Meh.
She touched a nerve most likely. Being an American white male I want when someone says something ignorant based on a culture and or sub-culture I just want to beat their face in with a Driver.

Just a case of cultural appropriation. People right now just love to praise foreign products and distance themselves from local ones - right now, anything that comes out of Japan is "exotic" enough for people to start harping on about how much superior it is. Happens with foreign films as well. I can't help but think that current Korean films are way better than Hollywood pictures, but I realise that this stems from an ignorance of films in general; there are many good Hollywood films I haven't bothered to watch last year, and I'm sure there are plenty of crap Korean films that I haven't seen, simply because only the better films are likely to be exported to the West anyway.

Back to comics vs manga. Sure, manga is ok, ignoring the fact that "manga" is just a Japanese equivelant term for "comic" (likewise the term "anime" is used to refer to Disney cartoons or any animation), but comics are superior simply because of this guy:
Who?

I love manga but, i also enjoy Western Comics.

People love to disagree and argue.
Its the same way with Games, Movies, and even food.
Everything has its Pro's and Con's.

Short answer: Because people are morons.

Also, I can't say I'm a fan of either. I'm not saying they're rubbish by any means, I've just never been interested enough to pursue the collection of them as a hobby.

I prefer Manga, but I don't care if you read comic books, and I know they can be just as good as manga.

People tend to think that they're opinion can qualifies for fact rtaher than... well, rather than opinion. It's a sort of "high and mighty" thing going on. It's always been there, it's not a recent thing.
I know, but it's just been happeing a lot here lately is all. Kinda wondered if there was some new trend popping up ^^;
It's no new trend, you just have a fairly large amount of them. Just smack them with rolled up newspapers and tell them "Bad" and everything will be fine.
I like the Marvel Encyclopedia idea, it's bit more blunt.

Wanted to vote, but you were missing option 3 for people like me, which is "I like both". Other than that nice poll :)

OT: It's a natural phenomon... a very unfortanet one but one none the less :/ Personally I try to keep an open mind to new things... at least I think I do... these things are really a matter of perspective.

What's funny here is that both are rather foreign here, and we're quite an upbeat multicultural country.

Cause i'm superrior to all of y'all, so obviously anything i bless with the awesomeness of my attention must be better than what you read/watch/play/wear/listen to.
If i didn't point this out at every chance, people might not realize how absolutely awesome i am, or even worse, I might not even get heard or noticed. Oh the horror.

Music, game genres, game platforms (oh this one is bad) etc. it's everywhere.

people are elitist bastards who needs to point out how they're supperior and has better taste based on practically nothing.
But i guess that if you have nothing to pride yourself by you can always try to feel better by yourself by running your sorry ass mouth about how you have the better console/pc or plays the better games or watches the better movies, or listens to the better music than everyone else.

I did the poll to see which is more popular, choosing a third option like that would be like voting for each and showing no difference. Most people tend to lean one way more then the other, but I will remember that in future ^_^

Heh. I know what you mean. What I said is what I say to myself all the time, but it hardly stops me from being angry with such people.

I totally understand what you mean, it's just bugged me and it's a slow day at work. Plus I haven't made a thread before I don't think.

I work at a comic book store in New Zealand, the only one in our capital as a matter of fact (it's not a huge industry over here.). We mostly specialize on western stuff ie: DC/Vertigo ,Marvel, Darkhorse, But we do deal in a small amount of Manga, we can order things in for people as well if we don't have them.

I had this one customer come up to me and buy some manga (Deathnote) which I have read too and she makes this snide comment about how manga is better then western stuff, I ask if she has read comics aside from manga and she tells me "Why bother, it's shit." Now I read manga and watch anime, as well as read comics etc and I think this kind of ignorance has been growing a lot as of late, especially in the manga side of things.

I know this isn't true on all people into either but it really annoys me when people are so closed minded like this. It's fine if you tried some and didn't like it, but it doesn't mean it downright sucks.

I was wondering if anyone else had noticed this sort of trend lately?

Also a poll, manga or comics (can be anything, DC, Marvel, whatever). I'm just curios what's more popular here on the Escapist.
You should make a "Neither" option, I can't really get into manga or comics.

Manga everyday.
Why?

Because something like 7/10 Comics are shit with nonexistant stories and actions nonstop.
Can you possibly back that up with some examples? A lot of manga are like that, Bleach and Naruto are good examples. My flat mate reads them and the plot isn't exactly rich in those not to mention they're fight after fight too.

I try not to be like that but at times its just instinctual to automatically defend and claim that your thing is better which is kind of wrong, even if you are doing it for the right reasons.

Its usually because people feel personally connected to their favourite things and will try and defend, or proclaim, the awesome of those things, especially when it its awesome..ness is being contested.
