(This mostly pertains to Modern Warfare)

I'll admit.

I don't like the newer Call of Duty games, both modern warfares failed in my eyes, the only one I can think of that I enjoyed was World at War, even then that was just because of Nazi zombies. Call of Duty 3 was more enjoyable than the modern warfares. But I suppose I have to thank them for helping to make my hobby of choice mainstream, video games are pretty common place, and almost everyone I know has at least taken a stab at them.

But at the same time I have to point out that they make video games and (and teenage boys) look bad. At least where I live, "COD" has become almost synonymous with video game. You're playing a video game? It's assumed that you're playing COD. You're not playing COD? You're gay.

And even if you're not playing Call of Duty, someone you know is, and their non-gamer family member or friend will come and watch then kill people for two seconds and judge all games. Granted this goes for most games, but these thoughts are commonly brought up by Call of Duty, which has a horrible story, and (in my mind) doesn't stand out as an example of a "good reason to kill virtual people" (see Mass Effect, Red Dead Redemption or Fallout 3 among others for good reasons to kill virtual people).

If nothing else I have to thank the games for being the poster boy for games. Because of that, the jerks who don't care about researching and trying games (and a few who do, because the game generally get amazing reviews) flock to it, because they don't put in the work to find a good game. As such, they stay out of my Bad Company2.

Now, I'm not asking you to change your ways, if you like CODMW (pronounced kind of like codmwah) then play it, I just want to keep this game from ruining the greatest generation the Industry has seen.

I can't really speak for this too much because the only time I play MW2 is when my friends are over and we play split-screen,I always find that enjoyable. But I've never played on Xbox Live with it.

The main reason I'm not to keen on CoD is because I'm a huge Medal of Honor fan. Well any Medal of Honor before Rising Sun.

I really liked the earlier CoD's like 3 and Finest Hour.

I pretty much stopped caring about your opinion when you said "WaW is best cuz nazi zombies, and COD3 is better than modern warfare." I hate when people say "COD has terrible story". If I recall, COD4's story was fucking awesome, and WaW is World War 2 so there's only so much they can do (MW2 was convoluted). So the fuck what? A game is popular. A new game comes around every year that people think is the "bestzors" so they play it no matter how poorly made it is. It just happens that COD4 had some basis for its popularity, because I thought it was pretty damn good. /end counter rant.

So COD is bad because it's popular?
And the game is not responsible for those retarded mongrels who prejudge games. That's their own retard fault. The story, well can't argue there.

I agree, well halfway, I live near a military base, so modern warfare 2 is like a gold mine to the military kids over there. Most of them only know modern warfare 2, if you say Battle field bad company 2, they will give you this strange look as if your mentally retarded. Someone will say, are you a gamer? If you say yes, the only thing that person would talk about is modern warfare 2. I love Modern warfare 2, single player and multiplayer, but I hate the fact that the "true gamer" only owns Call of duty. I dont blame the creators, but I blame the community. Oh yeah, I believe the story line for modern warfare 2 is awesome, I believe its better then Heavy Rain by a mile.

I'm not saying it's bad because it's popular, I was saying that it's a bit too popular, and it's diluting other good games. If you want me to talk about why it's a bad game that's a completely other topic.

I just don't like Call of Duty MW2 because it focused so much on Multiplayer and dumbed down Veteran Mode. I missed those week long sessions of me trying to complete Veteran mode, when I did it in the latest one, I felt like I didn't do anything, mainly because I played it on Veteran on my first playthrough.

On your arguement, I think you're going a little overboard. Yes, Call of Duty is popular, but it is not the poster child for ALL gaming, it shares the title of Poster child of Current FPS games. Especially those that try to sell under the word "Realism" (A Side-Note: No Video game is realistic. You can use real items and real tactics, but its still just a video game and as such, it will go against real logic at every turn.).

Call of Duty most certainly doesn't represent games like Oblivion or Mass Effect or WoW or Limbo or God of War and etc. Its popular, but you know what, So are all the previously mentioned games.

I'm guessing you really didn't like it. Am I right? Nazi Zombies were definitely the best part of WaW.

Was that all? Alright I'll keep playing MW2 then.

How can a game be too popular. So lots of people enjoy it despite its flaws, however big or small they may be. So what?
It's diluting other games, how so.

All my mates have moved on to FIFA or Red Dead Redemption.
I personally thought CoD was a bag of wank...until I started playing it.
The multiplayer gets you hooked really early with decent guns and quick level ups.
To be honest, I dislike CoD anyway, preferring the (PC) Battlefield games. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad MW2 managed to bring "Video Gaming" further into the spotlight, instead of cowering behind "Movies", but I just don't see the appeal of CoD all that much, other than Zombies!!!

This has been happening since the dawn of DOOM. Only difference is that bro gamer has replaced computer nerd in the cater-to market.

I honestly think, when compared to that era of games, gaming's image has never been stronger. Think of games like Guitar Hero, Wii Sports, and mobile play-for-5-minutes iPod Touch games. Games like those attract more attention than Modern Warfare, and given their pro-social nature, the people who play them don't see gaming as "do nothing but kill people".

You know, Nazi Zombies is one of the reasons I hate the new Call of Duty games. You know, Call of Duty, the intense, realistic, squad based shooter that was always one of the most respectful tellings of World War II? The game that was always focusing on historical accuracy and sometimes teaching you about the battles and motives of the war? And then they bring in Nazi Zombies.

I don't care about any Call of Duty game after 2 (and 2 is a stretch) and to me Call of Duty ended with 2. I'm not saying something about all Call of Duty players because I know there are exceptions, but most of the time the people who play Modern Warfare are not the people who I want playing other games that I play. See, whenever someone joins my game of L4D2 and they have a name like ^4Uber^2Sniper or something, I can almost always tell they won't be a team player and try to run out first and be rude to other players and most of the time I'm right. Those people can stick to Modern Warfare if they want to, I don't want them running out in the open Rambo style... unless they're on the other team.

And I hope that made you see how we can all make generalizations about games but that doesn't make us any more right and when I point that out I'm sure that nearly any Modern Warfare player can pull out a huge list of respectful team players just as you can pull out a list of games that counter a basher's arguments about video games.

I wouldnt say it would ruining the game industrys' image but it does shine light on the ugly parts. Whenever someone tries to put down our industry, they go for GTA.

I dont like CODMW either, I uninstalled it because it frustrated me. Campers game :|

In essence, you have a different opinion on the game. They're playing a video game, that's all that matters, really. It's not giving gaming a bad image, it's giving gaming a popular image. I don't care if you prefer multiplayer, I'll see you on it after the single player. So long as gaming moves forward, I'm cool with that.

If it's poisoning video games, it's because it has a huge following of clueless teenage gamers* who will pay whatever price for the game, buy whatever map pack, and quite likely pay a subscription fee for it. If this gouging catches on then that is what will poison videogames.

*No offense to any of the clued-in players who enjoy COD - I know there's alot out there who genuinely enjoy the game against other FPS'.

Halfway with ya. I'm in an environment where shooters are looked down upon by all of the 'real' gamers but I have fun with it. Sure I can detail exactly why MW2 is a fun exciting game, but I can also explain why it's a big pile of shit. I still love it though.

I only wish EA would make a game I could love because I'm getting tired of Activision's bullshit. Bad Company does not do it for me. The weapons aren't all that varied and it all feels like the game is doing the work for me. In COD, I've got to strategize, flank and ambush to get a positive K/D.

Call of Duty you kill people to stop terrorists blowing up the world...

Fallout 3 and Red Dead Redemption, you can kill people outside of any context, for no other reason than your sick pleasure at doing so.

EDIT:

My point is that COD is not to be blamed for the perception of games as mindless violence. Blame Doom for that.

Maybe I'm making too big an assumption for the rest of the world, but where I live (New Hampshire, USA) the pain has mad a pretty big impact, and has become a painful stereotype. I once had a conversation with a kid in my school, a while I said said something about how I like videogames, and this kid asked me how many time's I've prestiged. This is what I'm talking about, how it's just assumed that if you play games you love Call of Duty.

As for diluting other games, I'm saying that other great games that fall in a similar category, Bad Company 2 for example, are getting passed up or ignored, because people are content with Call of Duty. Now it sounds like I'm saying that's the end of the world, but that's not what I mean, I'm just saying that when people are talking about COD, and I reply with a "Bad Company 2 is better" only to be insulted for my choice, it's not exactly the best of condition the industry could be in.

Once again though, maybe it's just where I live, and I assumed it's a more wide spread phenomenon.
