This discussion always comes down to whether Infinity Ward should be allowed to include the scene, and I think most people with a vested interest in games actually supports the artistic potential of such a scene. However I think it's more important to consider whether this scene is actually any good.
Modern Warfare goes from jumping a chasm on a snowmobile straight to a harrowing scene in which the player must either actively participate, or watch helplessly, as inncocent civilians are gunned down in an attack reminicent of real world attacks like the mumbai massacre, before then moving to a running firefight through the slums of rio de janerio.
The story is a dumb adventure romp about some marines fighting the ruskies in suburban america, and a team of british special forces travelling the globe kicking ass. No Russian, taken out of context, is a great scene that comments on how the world is made a worse place by people blindly following their orders, but in the context of the game it doesn't really add anything to the story, and is jarringly out of synch with the gung-ho attitude of the games more action packed sequences. This is not a game about politics, or the value of human life, this is a game where you storm an Afghan school and shoot terrorists in the fucking face.
Perhaps the worst thing about it is that Makarov doesn't even appear again save for 3 lines of dialogue in the penultimate mission. The level serves no purpose other than to stir shit up and provide some semblence of artistic depth in a title that has very little.
The multiplayer is fun though.
