WoW is better than City of Heroes in a lot of different ways, but it still has a few aspects it beats Blizzard's baby at.

WoW still has nothing like the Exemplar/Sidekick system, dividing all would-be parties by level or even gear score. This would be a bigger issue if its player base wasn't so huge and I do like the new Dungeon Finder.

CoH possesses a far more in-depth character creation system to make up for most Enhancements not making any visual difference, and because of that it's still more varied. I remember hearing about an upcoming feature in WoW that let you use the appearance of whatever gear you liked while still wearing your best stuff, but I guess that became just the option to hide helmets and cloaks.

WoW makes each Expansion a huge change that is purchased. CoH makes each 'issue' free and released more frequently, but each one making only a handful of changes. Different business models, but I know that expansion price tags turn some folks off.

CoH's playerbase tends to be far more helpful and less elitist or trollish. That's the curse of having the largest playerbase around- you also get the highest percentage of vocal idiots. Also, WoW has so many tales and bits of player etiquette that its like an invitation for someone to fuck things up.

Too early to tell if DC Online will make a comeback, but I'd bet good money that my beloved CoH will continue to be the number one Super Hero MMORPG for a while yet at least. WoW will remain its superior, the number one MMORPG for even longer than that, but no one would take that bet.

Guild Wars, because it's a great game that you only have to pay once per expansion, which is pretty darn big. The strategy for each class in pvp keeps up the entertainment, and the story line is just plain awesome.

Frankly, I tried World of Warcraft, couldn't stand it. Go kill 10 such and such, now go kill 40 such and such, now bring me 8 things that drop from such and such for a completely stupid reason! Go kill 80 such and such that has nothing to do with anything at all.

Congratulations, you leveled up! Now you can go kill 10 of these such and such to level up again only to do this process over and over and over and over.

Question: How is this fun?

I'm a big fan of Atlus games, so naturally my thinking is "Hey, some company made an SMT-type MMO with permission from the makers." when I heard about Shin Megami Tensei: IMAGINE. It's a bit limited, but frankly I don't even care.

I stayed in DCUO for a bit but then my friends left so I had no reason to play it. I have a lifetime sub to lotro but refuse to play it. It's so boring. I recently went back to WoW with a buddy of mine. We've been just leveling a healer/tank duo and running dungeons in our free time. It's really fun considering we don't even have to rely on our teammates. They either dps or they don't. Things die from just the two of us eventually (I'm usually first or second in dps while tanking anyway.) Good dps only makes it faster. It's nice controlling the pace and direction of the group.

Edit: Mind you I hate the questing so we've been doing nothing but dungeon runs for levels. In our low 30s atm.

Runescape is better than WoW because Jagex, unlike pretty much every other MMORPG/RPG developer current out there, understand how to make PROPER quests:

Quests in pretty much any other game pretty much boil down to going to a waypoint and completing some objective, be it kill a certain amount of monsters or just a fetch quest. Runescape is good by comparison because even their fetch quests make you think -- you don't get a waypoint, you have to figure out where to go by yourself using a compass, and that alone makes Runescape infinitely better than some games.

So yeah. >.>

Runescape still kinda sucks though.

I was on WoW a lot but I quit for a while, didn't get a level 60 character (At the time I think that was max) but I got up to level 34 before just geting bored.

Tried it again 2 months ago infact but I couldn't even be bothered to get to level 15, such a drag!

Personally I've always enjoyed Maplestory, it was right good fun and seemily was the only really good 2D free MMO out there (if there is any more 2D GOOD ones out there drop me a line)!

Played Runescape for awhile when I was a lot younger, like crazy!

I'm getting off topic, right now I'd pick Perfect World.

I have played several MMO's, WoW included (Only for a limited time though) But my favorite of all time has to be Mabinogi by Nexon, Same company as Maple Story and Vindictus (V. actually took place in Mabinogi's back story). It is by far the most interesting MMO I have ever seen.

FREE TO PLAY.

I enjoy Mabi more because its freedom of customization, wide variety of skills and abilities, and unique combat system that is a fusion of real time, and turn based Rock-Paper-Scissors.

While the Anime-ish art style, and overall bright feel to the game might turn off some players, it offers a wide variety of character features, clothes, and armors that can allow you to adjust your look to accurately express the feeling you want to convey. Combine hundreds uppon hundreds of outfit choices, along with a full choice of colors (Not 8 or 10 or 24, but near limitless), You have very little risk of ever seeing any two characters look the same.

Unlike many other MMO's where Stronger Armors are unlocked as you level up, all clothings are available to wear as long as you can afford them (With a few, rare exceptions that are limited by other factors). However, just because one outfit is more expensive, doesn't mean it's better. Clothes are split into three levels: Heavy armor, Light Armor, and Clothing. Clothing offers little in terms of protection, while Heavy armor helps, it won't let you take on anything you couldn't take on before (THe combat is unique, more on that later). With this system, you find armor that you like to wear, and don't have to worry about giving up a pair of gloves you like because something with higher stats showed up. Of course, there are still some items that are rare, powerful, and worth bragging about.

In terms of Skills and Abilities, there are three types: Combat, Magic, and Life. Combat skills and Magic skills are Rather self explanatory. The number of skills are rather low, but each one is very useful. Life skills are abilities to create, or do special actions outside of combat. Life skills include the ability to Play and create music, Refine metal to be black smithed into weapons, armor, or items, tailor clothes, or even create a campfire to help battle wiry friends rest and heal. Skills are advanced by first using them enough times, then once you've met the requirements, you use Points accumulated by leveling up to jump it to the next level. While each of the races have a couple race specific skills, none are guided by skill trees or set archetypes. You don't Choose an Archer class, you just rank up archery related skills, and ignore melee skills. But, if down the line, you choose to change to a Fighter, or even a Craftsman, its not impossible to switch.

Every time you level (Or other major event), you gain AP, or Ability points, usually 2 per level. In order to advance a skill, you need to use your AP. As the skills rank up, they require more AP to advance. To fully Master some skills, you may have used hundreds of AP by the end. Unlike in Wow, where Level 80 is considered top, Mabi levels are done differently. You gain them like you would in Wow, Get expierence, gain level, more expierence for higher level, but after a while (1-3 Weeks)You get the option to Reset your level back to zero, while keeping your skills. Top level Mabi payers have total levels in the thousands, while their on screen level may only be 20-40. This allows you to get the 20AP needed to rank a high level skill in a lot less time. Also, you don't get any weaker for resetting, you can still take on the same level enemies you could before resetting.

And the last, but largest Difference is the combat mechanics. If used correctly, a new player with only the base skills can take on monsters a Dozen times as strong, if used incorrectly, a simple rat can take out a pro. At its core, it revolves around 4 Skills that each have their Strengths and weaknesses. Each skill takes a short amount of time to warm up and become active, and Limit the mobility of the user.

1) Defense: Slows the player to a walk while using. Skyrockets the players resistance to damage. If used with a Shield, can turn a One hit kill to one point loss. IF attacked when using defense, the attacker is momentarily stunned and open for retaliation.

2)Smash: Player can still run around while loading this skill. Skyrockets the players attack. One super strong attack that can do upwards of 200%-400% normal attack power. On the down side, all it takes is any other attack to cancel it. When used against De fence skill, it ignores the raised defenses, breaking straight through. Will send the target flying backwards.

3)Counter: Player stands still while loading and using skill. Drains energy needed to fight. If attacked with a Melee attack while countering, No damage is taken and Original attack plus extra is delivered back to the attacker. Devastating against Smash, Useless against Ranged attack.

4)Windmill: Only AOE attack, stand in one place, and when ready unleash a spinning kick that hits any monster in its range. Very useful when used as a counter after begin knocked back. Downside is it takes 10 Percent of your max health each time you use it.

There are several more combat skills, as well as Magic, Ranged, and Alchemy, who also have their own pros and Cons, but to add them would make this post way too long.

The combat alone sets Mabi apart, as its not just "click-hit-click-hit", If you can get the timing down right you can string together different moves to cause constant havoc and demolish your enemy.

But what is even more appealing is that Its not all about being the best fighter. You can train to be an amazing blacksmith, or create your own music to play. Its not hard to learn, but takes true Skill to master. It is honestly one of the most diverse MMO's I have ever played.

Curious? PM me, and I'll tell you more. I Really like this game.

Been playing Warcraft since day one.

I've dabbled with Guild Wars, wasn't interesting.

Played DDO for a while, but lost interest after a week

Just started playing Rift today, and I think its extremely good fun, just hoping it keeps me interested and doesn't become another MMO that falls to the wayside because of Warcraft heh.

Lots of stuff about Mabinogi.
Yeah, I'm going to have to agree with this poster. Mabinogi was the most fun for me since it did many things that are important to me. Largely, it's the customization, class-less system, community, and pacing of combat. While it suffers greatly from a poor internet connection, the game demands realtime movement and action, something that WoW doesn't do. Oh, and hits (or being hit) matter, as opposed to the drivel that is the pure DPS/HPS system. Jhtpo also mentioned the life skills... those are important, since I liken Mabinogi to being half combat, half Harvest Moon. There's a clear developmental focus with the non-combative side of the game, which gives that diversitiy that makes the game fun. And well, if you ever get bored of the main system, there's always the /storylines/.

(Oh, and go on Ruairi. Fun people on that server.)

Let me add CosmicBreak to that list. It's yet another fun game that involves realtime combat. Unlike most of the games listed here, it isn't really an MMORPG - rather, it's a third person mecha shooter (somewhat in the vein of a really frenetic Mechwarrior) that was built upon an MMO infrastructure (networking, as well as a clear distinction between PvP, PvE, and extended PvE). It has an incredibly in-depth customization system (again, much like Mechwarrior) and an anime influence (which might turn off some of you, but it helps with the style and maintaining low polygon counts). It's also running off of a microtransaction system, but I do recommend treating it as if it were a normal, retail game and pitch in $50 as a one-time purchase.

I would also give the following games a try, simply because of how much they push the envelop: Vindictus (or Mabinogi: Heroes, basically a Source Engine MMO that manages to work in the networking without making computers cry) and Wakfu (I guess it's still in closed beta, but the entire thing is written in Java and developed by French developers). Conveniently, both are using microtransaction systems, so it's baseline free-to-play.

Really, I wish Western game publishers/investors could be a little bit more creative and /not/ try and compete with WoW.

Other: Star Trek Online.

Why is it better than WoW?

The community is helpful and polite, The combat (space only) is a lot more tactical and with the upcoming ground combat re-vamp away missions will be just as good as space.
Also "The Foundry" has gone live and given the players access to potentially thousands of user generated missions and tons of new content.
Finally featured episodes always feel fresh with a very high standard of writing and polish.

If you where put of by the open beta or bad initial reviews then I strongly suggest you give it another blast, It's only $5 or so on steam these days with 30 days play time.

I've played several MMOs and they all have their ups and downs. One thing that makes especially the smaller MMOs different is the sense of community. WoW simply doesn't have that anymore.

What's that? It smells like controversy.

Okay, to be honest, Wow is number one, and it's number one for a reason, but not everyone who plays MMOs plays Warcraft. So my question is, what is your MMO of choice and what draws you to it? For me, It's Dofus. I've just always been partial to Tactical RPGs (fft, Disgea) so this one was a natural choice.

But what about you? What makes you shun WoW in favor of your MMO?
Oh, I play WoW. I just don't seem to be as into it as other MMOs I've played.

The two MMOs that I enjoyed far more than WoW, one of which I still play:

Dungeons & Dragons Online and Warhammer Online.

Reasons:

Dungeons & Dragons Online is just a completely different experience, and I'm totally, hopelessly addicted to Dungeons & Dragons rules - no matter what the edition. Take my favorite series of fantasy gaming - that I still play tabletop every week even though I started at 12 and now I'm 32 - and make it into an MMO? YES PLEASE K THX! I like the fact that it isn't like every other MMO out there; the character creation is truly unique and the traditional roles of tank/DPS/healer are blurred. My wife and I have been playing this game since 2006 and honestly I have a lot more hours clocked into DDO than I do WoW; and I enjoy it more.

Warhammer Online I actually quit playing WoW for, for a while. Why? Because I was/am obsessed with RvR PvP - have been since Dark Age of Camelot. I LOVE being the leader of a group of 24 people and leading them to victory by taking the "keep" of a group of my enemies. I LOVED the "team sports" style of the scenarios. I loved most things about the game, except the lack of a 3rd faction. If other people felt the same way I did and they didn't merge all the servers due to lack of player base I'd still be playing it now.

Both of those games have a vastly different feel than WoW.

I also enjoyed Fallen Earth, which for me was a lot like "Fallout Online" but it felt too... empty and under-done, for my tastes.

WoW is OK but I like it mainly for the smoothness and full-featured nature of the game; the art style, graphics, etc., are way too cartoon-y and "cutesy" for me. I will say this, though - anyone who says WoW is an "easy" game obviously hasn't played much of the end-game 25 man raids, etc... or experienced the cutthroat nature of Arena PvP at high levels. Hop on a PvP server and tell me how "easy" WoW is. ;)

That isn't fun. I have more fun leveling through PvP and random dungeon groups, personally.

I ignore the quest-leveling in WoW; for the most part.
