Haha funnily enough I was just having an argument with a friend over Xbox live today, because he takes his online gaming far too seriously and gets incredibly annoyed at pretty small things. Like people who use LMGs on COD4, saying they "take no skill to use" and "its a n00b spray and pray gun" or people using juggernaut, and that general group of people just using features of a game available to everyone to better effect than so called "skilled" players. And I'm not exaggerating he gets genuinely offended by stuff like this.

Also many people seem to take losing very seriously, especially when it is by a pretty large margin. Its pretty often that I get challenged to a one-on-one because some moron is to incensed by losing that they attempt to try and regain some stupid kind of gaming honour like its an old school sword duel or something.

Personally though I don't take online gaming seriously at all. The only reason I play pretty much any game online is to chill out and talk to some friends from the comfort of my own home...and take the piss out of stupidly serious gamers as well of course.

I take gaming seriously. Go ahead-- laugh! Call me an angry, closet-dwelling nerd-- but I'm a competitive person.

That, plus I'm only really having fun when I'm winning. (Which is almost always.)

Wow. No offense, but you sound like a douche-bag, dude.

It's all about finding the right people to play with. Just don't quip whenever you kill someone. That tends to piss them off pretty quick. Funny though, slashing someone to death with knife and then saying "knife to meet you" into your mike in a bad Arnie accent. Well, it is when you've had a bit to drink.

What's T-Bagging? Are we talking 'balls on chin', or is that not what that phrase means to you guys?

Edit: Shooting someone so they fall into a swimming pool/pond/river etc and then telling them to "cool off" is fun too. Bad Arnie accent essential.

I don't think its too bad, as the only multiplayer game i play now is TF2 and punshing someone to death as a heavy is funny for everyone

I was hardly ripping it off... i love the film... the only reason i said "Why so serious" was also yes it is from the dark knight but it is actually a question i was asking myself... why are people taking these things so seriously, i'm not trying to rip off anything thanks very much....
although i could tell someone was going to make a comment because i used something from the dark knight... if it was honestly useless to you why did you have to comment about it i am not trying to draw anyone in... you read it if you want and if you dont fine.

And your the only person who has actually said that.

I never seem to find anyone as competative on TF2 although that game can be slightly frustrating at times and yes Singleplayer recently has been ignored, on most 360 games now there are more multiplayer achievments than there are single.

Multiplayer gaming is way too serious. I played in a clan for a short while but quit just because it wasn't any fun. If you have xbox live, then it's obvious that people take things too seriously.

Gaming probably will become an olympic event to be honest. I mean, they have beach volleyball [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beach_volleyball#Controversy] for christ's sake.

As it has been said many times, online is what you make it. I have played with some VERY serious people and some laid back people, but the levels they played at were very different. But there are some very competative people in the FPS side of gaming.

Also, as for the single player with online auction houses... the issue with that would be item authenticity. It would be nearly impossible if you were offline (no internet connectivity) and got an item through 'hacking' for lack of a better word, for the game to tell it was ill-gotten, unless you were online the whole time. As a result, you can just go online and make a passworded game, or just don't join a party, and play solo.

Voila! Online single player. Just no auction house.

Some days I do, some days I don't. I try to stick to non-ranked games now,... TF2, COD4, soon to be L4D.

I try to stay away from CS:S.

i played CS:S for some time and as soon as you beat the other team you were considered as a hacker or a cheater. TF2 is probably the least competative since everyone just messes around on there

I like to think its because the're handling gay urges and try and make themselves hate men by calling them fags so they can deal with their insecurity of being a "Ball Handler".

You're right. I was way too harsh. My apologies, I was in a bad mood and it was uncalled for. :)

As for the topic:
I think that part of the fun in multi player is the friendly and good willed interaction between people. When it gets overly competitive the fun disappears and it becomes just another professional sport, which is not what I'm looking for in a game.

A lot of the competitive bloody curdling abuse on xbox live comes as a result of people being extremely bored, or trying to impress their friends. Just like you'd pull wheelies on your bicycle whenever you went past some cool dudes as a kid, showing off gives you a rather fuzzy feeling, and is very satisfying.

Although there is quite a large demographic of people who get generally angry at a game, and headbutt their fridge, I think a lot of it is just in the pursuit of a good laugh with themselves. Most Xbox live racists aren't strictly racists, they're just people trying to get a rise, and stimulate some entertainment for themself and possibly their friends.
