My new island nation, Potatolassia, shall rule the entire world by 2050 through a combination of space lazers and genetic supersoldiers. We shall have an army of robocops. Applications welcome.
Question one: How do I apply?
Question two: How shall we refer to you, m'lordship?
Answer 1: By killing at least 10 people with a single potato (extra points for creativity).
Answer 2: My username will work.
I shall begin at once, sir Spud.

I only hope that by 2050 humans stop drawing lines in the sand, measuring value with pieces of paper and just have earth.

I think there will be many world powers, each controlling its own region. Turkey is probably going to be the first developed country to be practically self sufficient (in terms of shelter, water, food and energy) and will probably control the Middle East. Brazils stock market is growing very quickly, and is showing no signs of slowing down so it probably going to be South Americas regional power. The UK or Germany will be Europes main power. India and China are going to be Asias main power, it just depends on India, as they might want to stay isolationist. The Us is probably going to remain North Americas main power, I could even see the governments of the US and Canada merging. Africa will probably be under the control of South Africa, but Africa is probably going to remain poor for a while. These countries are probably going to just take care of their regions, but thats just my guess

Not really, they may own a large part of the debt, but they do not hold anything close to a majority hold. Also, the united states is a sovereign nation, and we can do what we want. I mean I could say that Europe is Turkey and Africas *****, because they are major exporters of food to the European Union, but I would be incorrect, even if they did hold the amount of debt China held.

I think we're getting away from superpowers and starting to see the global power balance become more...well, balanced. BRICS, the USA, France, Germany, The UK, Japan, Korea, Chile, Argentina, Venezuela, Canada, Australia, Egypt, and Indonesia are the countries that I think will drive the world forward and, barring any unforeseeable events, I think will start to come to even footing in terms of global power. For the US, that means losing power, for everyone else, it means gaining it.

What does 'World's Leading Superpower' even mean?

Do they have power over something other than themselves?
Keeping in mind that the discussion is already silly...

I once theorized that if there was any nation, and country at all, that had established itself and empowered itself and decided to stick its inluences enough into many numerous places all over the world to take over every other country...it is the U.S. It's not simply a boast or even grandstand paranoia. It's just that it believes it can govern the world, so one day it might try.

India.

As far as I can see, they're the only option (other than Brazil, but, come on, Brazil? Seriously? Is this a joke option or something?) that aren't falling apart under what can only be described as retarded leadership. So yay! Go India!

And... erm... by-the-by, you do kinda owe a good bit to the ol' Empire for making you what you were today... so... er... be nice to Britain... please? =)

I think China has already got the mantle. Right now their just eyeing up Africa as one giant farmland to feed its population.

Sure why not, let's add another chapter into this grand epic of a drama we call world politics. And quite frankly I don't believe that national debt thing that plagues the working class Americans like there's no tomorrow even exists. I think it's nothing more than a scare tactic that keeps the people of this nation quiet and under the government's thumb, and gives them an excuse to rob us of our hard earned money and jobs. All this debt just proves how greedy our government is, and how they could give two shits about responsibility as the leading force of this nation.

As with some other stupid bullshit that government had to "come to an agreement on" earlier this year, they'll stall out these "talks" long enough to get us on the edge of our proverbial seats, and at the very last minute reach a deal that will probably cause a huge sigh of relief. (Then proceed to shit on us a few months down the road, I'm guessing right around Christmas.) I just find it funny that this debt crisis, and the national debt number have become so obnoxiously adamant anymore that you can't go about your day without someone or something smothering it in your face. To be honest I wish governments of all kinds would cut this stupid shit out. They aren't heroes so they need to stop acting like they think they are one. And they need to stop hiding behind loop holes and lawyers every time someone calls them out for not doing their jobs.

As for China succeeding the US, I doubt that will happen. I believe what we have going on here is a mutual agreement, we provide jobs for the people as well as supplies, and they provide us with products, the money is equally interchanged. If China were to take over the US, I have a feeling they'd be like "So....now what?". Granted I don't know everything there is to know about China or its tendencies to take over other countries, but as far as I can see, they've got their hands full with their own problems right now especially with Korea and Japan. Remember people the Japanese and Chinese don't like each other, so they'll probably want to attack them before they'd attack us. And if China is weakened by such bold advances, what's honestly stopping Russia from invading? Something tells me that if they would do that, they'd have done it by now. As for India, I don't really see it gaining too much power. I can imagine it will advance to an industrialized 2nd world country or possibly a 3rd, but nothing too militantly powerful.

germany doesn't have the population to take over anything. They have about 81 million people. One of the big reasons that the US suceeded against them in WW1 and WW2 was that we had so many people that the vast military advantage was rendered mute and we were able to catch up while they eventually ran out of quality people to fight. And let's not mention the double edged sword of not having a real military right now. military wise we'd crush anyone but china, eventually they'd just out people us. I don't know about the US though we haven't fought a real war since vietnam. we cant even get Iraq under control and their best weapons are bombs they bury under the ground. Nuclear war is out of the question unless we wanted a no win for anyone situation, if we press the button they press the button and we all get destroyed no cake for anyone. I'd stick with either the US or china based on economies, population and general patriotism and zeal.

Given the rate of economic growth in China I'd say they're going to overtake the U.S. fairly soon. I don't understand why people think that the U.S. can't be toppled, it hasn't even been a super-power for that long.

I was under the impression China was already more powerful than The US.
Econmically they supply all manner of shit to the west. Because it's cheap. Plus their citizens don't have the level of human rights the west has. So all that money it makes doesn't have to make an appearance to the people. just to China's treasury.
So not only are they wealthier. If they decided to cut off all trading with America, I think America would suffer more than China would.

But all that doesn't necessarily mean China is more powerful politically. But it does have an interesting advantage in that area

Despite current economic problems, the US remains the world' hegemon, and will do for some time. Personally, I'd like to think the EU could get it's act together, in which case they'd be the ones to replace the US...or the US would successfully undermine them.

Yes, already happened.

Who do you think owns America's massive government debt? More pertinently, where did the money come from to begin with?

China has the manufacturing, the income and the keys to the money, it snaps it's fingers, America jumps whether it admits to it or not.

Might be worth noting the Chinese control the value of the American Dollar while we're at it, they buy and sell it to keep it's value at a level they want, nobody else has enough money to challenge the price they want to set, especially not America.

I'm not seeing it. All of those countries have economies that are based on the US economy. They all have massive reserves of US Dollars and they don't have the military to overtake us in that way. They rely on our success for their success so they can't really bring us down.

Personally, I don't think there will be a superpower in 2050. I think that economic issues will cause most nations to retreat from global interactions and focus on stabilizing their own economies and becoming less reliant on each other. For a few decades anyway. However, China has the best chance of retaining most of it's economic and military power and stability, but with the rest of the countries needing to withdraw into themselves, it won't mean that much IMO.

Since when has Germany on their own been a contender to be a world superpower? I would like to think that if we here in Europe got our act together and worked as a team then we could become an economic powerhouse, but that's not likely to happen any time soon ¬¬

Unfortuneatly China. I say unfortuneatly because they have really shitty human rights, inhumane stifling of free speech, and privacy? What privacy? If one nation has to be the most powerful I still prefer the States, as long as they do not invade us.
