Probably China. I mean, young (governmentally speaking, I know China is an ancient country but it's current regime has only existed for around 60 or so years.) ambitious, rich, and ethically loose country that has massive untapped resources and clout takes the stage from stagnant, aging superpower that can no longer police it own imperial holdings and interests. Where have we seen this before? Oh, well, U.S. taking center stage over the British Empire in the 1950's. Britain taking the stage from the French in the 1750's. France taking it from Spain. Spain from Portugal. You get the idea. It's obviously not as clear cut as I'm making it out to be, but yes, some country will take world precedence over the U.S. eventually. Maybe not in my lifetime, but definitely in my hypothetical children's. Right now, China is a solid bet with Brazil a close second and India holding steady at number 3.

China has no chance. I can't believe they haven't been overthrown, the way they treat their people. Plus, if the US decided to pull its jobs out of China, what would happen to them?

I think we should be wary of Mexico. Those buggers ever lay off the tequila, and we're screwed! ;)

No, but seriously? China has way too many internal problems and would struggle. If anything I think the US might grow even bigger, despite the fact people see them as dicks, or trying to be the world police, or just a big bully.

Our politicians will suck up to them, because it makes economic sense >.>

There's a TON of nationalist propaganda in China, and the government is actively encouraging people to fear encroachment by Western powers. I'm not sure how effective it is on the common citizen, but the Central Party hopes by scaring people about foreign conspiracies to take over China, they can keep their population complacent.

China cannot call its debt in for a very big reason. If they did that, the US would crumble, and if it crumbles, so does the world. China has invested a lot of money into our country, if they call it in now, they won't get a single cent of it.

I think by 2050, the world would have changed and that both the US and China and India will all get along. Wishful thinking on my part? Maybe. But that's what I hope happens.
Great post, and pretty spot on from what I have been able to glean with my limited understanding of politics on the world stage. Only thing I wanted to comment on is this:

In military terms, it's quite strong, but still far behind the US - the Chinese have virtually no blue-sea capable fleet, although they are starting to built Aircraft carriers now, they won't have a fleet that can challenge the US navy for at least 2 decades. By 2050, who knows what the Chinese military is capable of.
I've read some interesting articles lately, mostly projections and conjecture, about China's submarine programs, and how many military 'experts' are claiming this will be the path to China's eventual dominance in the blue.

Oh c'mon guys, ok 2050 is a long way away, but China to the rest of the world is kinda like 'meh, we'll just do what we like, help us if you want, be we aint helping you'.

NEW RULE: People with 10 posts don't get to make their own thread until they're up to fifty, and the RP section doesn't count.

In other news: No, China isn't going to supplant the U.S.
I like this, can this be a forum rule? And no Polls until 100 posts? It would be so nice...

OT: I think that the US and China will be competing much less subtly come 2050 but I don't think the US will be completely suplanted.

I think in 2066 China will attack Alaska for its oil.

In 2072 the US will fully annex Canada

And on October 23, 2077...nuclear war.

I wonder how many will understand this little referential timeline of mine

I think that unless the US climbs out of this vicious circle of debt, China will most certainly overtake them very fast. In time they will anyway.

People who believe this tend to be ill equipped to handle the conversation.

Most of the money we owe, we owe to ourselves.

Edit - Totally superfluous. Holy shit, hundred posts. Yay.

China is pretty damn close to a collapse - give it 10 years.

While the nation itself is making bank, most citizens are beyond poor, and are treated like slaves. They have a bit of extra spending money, but overall their standard of living is just horrible.

The Chinese have the work ethic and manpower to be a Superpower - but they don't have the proper structure. The closer and closer they get to over-throwing the US as the dominant force in the world, the more and more they'll crumble.

Not to mention, as soon as this whole "Financial Crisis" is "over" (when the media as a whole stops making a big deal out of it and people realize the reccession ended back in 09), and the US finally gets its debt situation figured out (as soon as we can force politicians to make live within our means), China's gonna shrink from power.

While I admit that the US has it's share of problems (i.e. some leaders elected officials have their heads way up their ass), China also has a laundry list of things that they need to get through. Then again who know we might be singing this song by the time we grow old and gray:

Rule Britania, Birtania rules the waves... Much love from the other side of the pond.

I personally think that the USA is already "de-throned".

They have the biggest economy but the biggest debt. Sure, I can be a millionaire if I borrow a million dollars...
