So Gearbox has finally released Duke Nukem, a game which in my opinion is pretty good, but suffers from a lot of problems due to the long development time. Now that it is finally out, do you think Gear Box will make another game, no longer having to deal with the expectations and the mistakes of the past developers?

I dont think so. The game in my opinion was average at best and the gameplay wasnt that crash hot either. The nostalgia effect of the game has worn off. I dont see how they can advance the franchise any further with another game.

If it were made by a competent developer, and not stuck in purgatory for about a decade and a half, it's possible a Duke game could come out and actually be good. It's depressing when I see the trailer for Serious Sam 3 and think to myself, "Man, if only Duke Nukem Forever could have looked this cool."

God I hope not.

I just don't think something that was 'shocking/edgy' in the 90s can still be so 1.5 decades later. The series is a classic, but let it die a graceful death.

Eh... Maybe? I guess it depends on how much money it makes (because it certainly won't be due to anything groundbreaking in the game itself). But it'd have to make some serious cash to warrant a sequel. The DN series has overcome the bad press of more than a decade of delays and slew of damning reviews criticizing everything from the story to the humor to the gameplay itself.

I personally don't see a sequel coming. Then again, I've seen other series continue long after I thought they were dead.

OP: I assume you mean another -Duke Nukem- game.

I hope not. As a deconstruction, Duke is no longer relevant. As a property, it's no longer interesting. It's selling points as an absurd, sex-and-testosterone laden romp are now not even worth raising an eyebrow over. Gameplay? Mediocre and uninspired at best. Duke does nothing which hasn't been beat to death already. Sure, Doom and Duke in their day managed to provide some shock value and some amazing, revolutionary gameplay in the 1990's. Today, the boobs and toilet humor just don't make a game sell (Hello BMX XXX?) and DNF does nothing new gameplay wise.

Investors are generally not stupid; twelve years of vaporware followed by a critically lambasted game which many players were thoroughly disappointed with? Yes, I can hear the counter-argument already: Duke is selling well despite the overall negative reaction. However, there are no sales figures released, just Gearbox's assurances that they're selling "greasy hamburgers."

I want to say No. I want to say that after this, we finally got what people were expecting and there's closure. No point in ripping open any old wounds now.

BUT

Given the groups of people who enjoyed the game, given the legacy it has behind it, given all the people who bought it because...Duke Nukem Forever is out, and given...well a lot of factors...

I imagine we'll probably be seeing a sequel on the horizon by next years E3 at the latest.

It doesn't really matter to me though. I never played any of the old Duke Nukem games, I didn't play this one, and I'm not gonna play the next one that's destined to come out.

I think there is no chance that Gearbox is going to go through and acquire the IP, knowing the first release will inevitably be faced with fan backlash no matter what is released, just to give up on it. It might be 3-4 years before we see a new installment, but I think its safe to bet on Duke.... returning eventually.

Don't know, but I hope so. I've liked all the games I've played so far.

Still, they need a return to form. The original Duke.

now that forever has been released i think that gearbox is going to release a sequel. I'm interested to see how they handle it now that they have full control off the franchise. They could easily turn it into a great or at least decent game.

I don't know.I really don't know.
My hope is they do and do it right, but it all just seems .... it just seems like the king is suffering a lack of infrastructure within his kingdom.I hope he comes back, hell, its Duke Nukem we're talking about but that's only going to happen if GearBox has that great a nostalgia factor or sells off the license.Either way, things look grim.

Graceful? You're talking about DN right?

With 90's design style instead of early to mid 2000 FPS design style, DNF could have been a great game.

I will wait for some well designed levels and some non-linearity, and maps without a single scripted event.

Probably, but it would need the following:

DNF gets retconned into DisContinuty.
Some Lampshades need to be hung.

Im enjoying now but some things need to be improved, if they learned off Half Life 2 it would be better.

Such as
NO two weapon limit
No regen health
Better graphics
Better driving sections
Better health system (I dont wanna be shot once and have to regen)

If those where improved it would be better for everyone...but still I hope to HAIL TO THE KING and give it a perfect rating in my lifetime.

I'd rather it doesn't. I actually agree with Leigh Alexander a bit in regards to this whole thing:
http://sexyvideogameland.blogspot.com/2011/06/for-dummies.html

Namely that I was actually a little bit worried that Duke Nukem Forever would succeed and usher in a new generation of immature poop and sexism jokes with cheap titilation popped in and immaturity running high. The fact that it's failing both in gameplay and in the fact that people of this day and age really plain don't like the jokes is actually a good sign. To me anyway.

I suppose if the fanbase wants the game to come out, I won't try to prevent it. After all it's their right to play whatever they want and even if I don't enjoy it, it doesn't mean I should step on the toes of people who do. But all the same, I certainly don't think Duke's persona, attitude towards women, immature jokes and satirical portrayal of things that are so irrelevant in this day and age really have enough to carry the franchise on it's own.

Because without that, Duke Nukem is pretty much just a below average shooter that mocks games like Halo, Half Life, Gears of War and Dead Space but is kind of inferior to all of them.

I guess what I'm saying is, Duke Nukem is a forgotten relic that was dug up and is filled with stuff that might have been great over a decade ago but times have changed too much now, so either Duke works really hard to reinvent himself, or he's got no relevance.

But again, that's just how I see it. Just to be clear, I wish no offence towards any fans of Duke Nukem.

I definitely hope so, but I seriously doubt 2K will be willing to take such a (in their eyes) huge risk. They've seen the reviews and now probably think there's little interest anymore in the Duke, wich is a crying shame if they really think so.
