Well...Here's my take...

Fallout 3 was a great game...it's so good...so unreasonably that it'd be next to impossible for the next one to be better or even as good...

Bioshock 2 wasn't a bad game in anyway...the only problem with the game was that it wasn't Bioshock 2. If it was released first, everyone would have been amazed at it just like the first. The first time you descended into Rapture and saw the giant whale swimming through the city, the first reaction I had (and probably everyone else playing the game had) was "Holy shit...that's awesome..." By the time part two came out, instead of the reactions I had, it was "Hey, a shark" and then I moved on with my life. It got to the point where I wasn't exploring everything the way I did in the first one or even looking out of the glass tubes to see what was going on outside like I was in the first one.

I think New Vegas will have the same problem
Replace "Fallout 3" with "Fallout 2" and "New Vegas" with "Fallout 3" and you've got my opinion.

What I really hope they do is improve the shooter mechanic, it was horrid. Either make it more RPG-y, or just make it less... sucky really, such as a proper FPS/3PS mechanic.

Oh, and Voice acting, story, and animation, those were unforgiveable.

Looks like it'll be just as good as FO3, but I voted "better" because it looks like it'll stop the waves of nerd rage and nostalgia coming from those who thought FO3 was garbage compared to the first two.
Either way, I'm getting it. Excellent stuff.

I loved Fallout 3. A lot.

But after going back and playing Fallout 1 & 2 I get the feeling Fallout 3 could have just as easily been called "Generic Post-Apocalyptic Game" and been just as good without as destroying a brilliant IP.

Hopefully with the original Fallout creators in the hot seat we can get Fallout 3's gameplay with the brilliant and hilarious story telling of the original Fallout games. It also sounds like it's being refined a lot (they're making the combat more FPS like and the rest of the game more RPG like) and Hardcore mode sounds great too.

Having never played Fallout 1 and 2, Fallout 3 quickly became my favorite game. I don't really know the reasons fans of the first 2 games complain about, but as long as the game maintains an awesome atmosphere and depth, count me in. And from what I've seen, it looks perfect. It might not make as big an impact as FO3 made, because there don't seem to be that many improvements, but I'm guessing it will still be better.

And also I remember that if you stumbled across Enclave soldiers in Fallout 2, it tended to be a matter of: "HOLY SHIT! Enemies with power armour and laser weapons! Im gonna die!" The first few times it happened. In fallout 3 it didn't take long for me to slaughter enclave troopers wearing power armour in their hundreds without breaking a sweat.
Fallout 3 made power armour damn near useless.

In Fallout 2, Enclave troops were something to be feared. When you run into them the first time, you barely have time to read their little one liners before being reduced to ash.

"Hey, have you seen what one of these babies can do to exposed flesh?" *pew, dead!*

I hope New Vegas is more Fallouty than F3.

BS2 was a really good game on its own, but it had a lot of issues thanks to Ken Levine deciding not to participate in the making. The pacing and subtlety was gone, the development of the story and characters only got good at the way ends, and there was a lot of opportunities missed in the direction they could have taken.

(underwater combat, open exploration, hydro-physic effects, pre-dystopia Rapture)

You see a lot of the (hardcore) fans of FO find FO3 more on the lines of BS2 when comparing to the previous installments.

Personally I prefer FO3 since I'm not a fan of top down views and the turn base combat you find in the first two games. But the main story was a lot better written, and now that those same developers are back to making another FO game with the gameplay of the third...a lot of us feel FO:NV will be nothing less than solid gold.

But, I prefer not to hold my breath, there's a lot of room for disappointment when your expectation get too high..=/

Falling short of bringing out a 'real' Fallout 3 (That is to say A Post-Apocalyptic Roleplaying Game, as opposed to the Post-Apocalyptic Generic FPS Bethesda released) New Vegas looks good.

I just hope that along with the deeper dialogue trees, they bring back things which made the originals great. The 4th-wall breaking humour, making certain things feel more "heroic" (Power Armour should be a massively awe-inspiring thing, enemies wearing it doubly so) and more interactive little easter eggs.

Who can forget the great little bit in Gecko where you can accidentally phone up the Enclave and taunt the (fully voice acted - which was something for Fallout 2 NPCs) Enclave soldier. Brilliant.

Let's see. Take Bethesda's mastery of gameplay mechanics that were self-evident throughout Fallout 3, add in JE Sawyer and friends who are better writers and loremasters than Emil Pagliarulo could hope to be in his wildest dreams (don't get me wrong, Emil rocks, but he's got nothing on the original Fallout guys)...

That sounds an awful lot like a "best of both worlds" Game of the Year lock right there.
What he said. Everything I've been reading points to a better game. It will be awesome to have more realism in the game, greater difficulty options and a deeper story.

The only thing that makes Fallout 3 better than Fallout Vegas at this point for me is that I have Fallout 3 and I have to wait to get Vegas.

I have to wait far, far too long....

it's not hip or unique to bash on a fantastic game. okay, it wasn't as deep as fallout 1 or 2 (especially 2) but it was still fantastic and having a first person perspective was really good. i don't know if you saw/played the van buren demo (probably did) but i didn't like playing it for even a minute. and the story? it was really good. early on eden does a great job making you believe the enclave may actually be good guys, then three dog comes around and was ridiculously amusing and the "updates" were really immersive. reminded me of the GTA radio stations. the story made you feel like even though you were obviously the "one", it still had this sense that you were moving around the world, not that the world was revolving around you. anyway new vegas will be amazing, probably better than fallout 3 which is like saying there'll be an indiana jones movie better than raiders of the lost ark, but it'll happen. i'm still waiting on fallout new york if it'll ever happen. creepy warrior-style baseball related gangs? (THE JOE PEPITONE GANG), HUEG (yes, hueg) subways? over the top bushwick accents and a fort in the middle of central park? aaaayyy.

I'm very much looking forward to it.

I played a LOT of FO3, kinda lost interest after the 2nd DLC because it wasn't very deep. But I love the FO series a lot.

I honestly don't see how they could mess it up.

Good game engine + time to improve it
Original story teller + time to write it
= Great game
