I had serious doubts with Mass Effect 2 because it was so hyped. But it delivered. I'm sure Mass Effect 3 will deliver a great experience.

What hype? Am i the only on this site thats not hyped about this game at all? I cant be the only one that thought ME2 was an overrated, bad RPG and an average 3rd person shooter?

Mass Effect 3 WILL be great, if nothing else, than because I'll finally be able to give closure to the three Sheppards I have at time of writing (Planning on adding a fourth to the family pretty soon...). Also it will be the last EA game I ever buy, I'm so pissed at them about everything they do. But I'm still buying ME3, day of launch, I would still buy it if it where being sold to me by the devil. (Which it kind of is)

OT: I haven't really seen a lot of hype for ME3. All of the information I can find on it makes me think it'll be the best in the series, though (in my opinion, obviously).

Who's expectations? I bet that a large portion of the gaming community will be unsatisfied no matter how good ME3 is. As long as it delivers more of the same stuff that ME2 had I'll be happy.

This seems like a very silly question; we haven't played the game yet, so we have no idea how it will live up to our expectations. That expectations word there, that's the one you should be focusing on when the game isn't even out yet.

Surely that would depend on exactly what expectation we're referring to.

My expectation is, "great game similar to Mass Effect 2". The pre-release material I have seen so far has not disappointed me.

Woah there, that's Bioware fanboys, not EA. Technically the same entity but there's a distinction between the two, and not respecting that is Fightin' Words Round These Parts. Also, I understand respecting differences of opinion and all that, but accusing people of being fans of EA? That's beyond the pale my friend.
Except it's not "technically" the same entity, it IS the same entity.

I found this. It's crude, but so very well sums up the situation with Bioware lately.

I was caught up in the hype machine for ME2 and I walked away disappointed, so I lowered my expectations for ME3.
Not because ME2 was bad, but because I didn't think it was as good as the first and I'm not expecting the third one to be either. I really can't be disappointed by it, so in my case at least, there's no way it can't live up to the hype.

I actually don't think there's been a whole lot of buzz around ME3 (other than concerns about MP). I'm looking forward to it but don't think people have made that big of a deal about the game.

Honestly, I was hearing a lot more about ME2 during its later phases of development than ME3.

I really enjoyed the last two Mass effect games but I wonder if Mass Effect 3 will be as good. Sure, they may follow the same basic format, but I can't help feeling the game could be ruined if they change too much like reintroducing vehicle systems in a crap way.

Thoughts?
Well firstly on your example, the vehicle kicked the shit out of that fucking planet scanning, my gods, molten liquid glass on my arms would've been less painful. The vehicle on the other hand? Well that was just a bit quirky. Besides, I loved taking down a thresher maul to within an inch of its life, then killing it with a pistol, or sniping out geth and mercenaries, that was awesome.

Will it be the game of all of our dreams? Impossible. Will it be as good as either game, very likely. Will it be the best in the series? Odds are against it. I'd say its got a 30% of being the best, 50% of being better than one of the games, and the remaining 20% of it being a close third (mind you, with ME2's story setting the bar so low, it can hardly fail there).

It all depends on whether or not it merges RPG with FPS well or not, the first one was critised as not having enough FPS, the second kills many of the RPG elements, so if this could get inbetween somehow, that'd be a huge point in its favour.

It also has to deal with the Reaper story, which is much harder than either story in ME1 or ME2, but hopefully they thought out the whole story at the beginning of ME1, so it'll have a nice ending.

But worst, worst, worst case scenario, its a 75/100 game, and didn't live up to the hype, and kills a great series - 2 out of 3 games is not bad. It'll still be an awesome FPS/RPG game, with good seqeunce, many good plot elements and gameplay should be good too, even if the main story is a failure, so I don't think many of us will be too badly burnt if it doesn't be the legend we're hoping it will be.

Look, this game is probably going to be amazingly good. (I'm pretty damn sure.)

I think too many people are worrying over things like small gameplay changes or the integration of nonsensical things. People want this game to be perfect and it can't be, but that doesn't mean if it isn't perfect it can't be amazing.

At the end of the day aren't we looking forward to the story the most? I'm positive the story and the dialogue are going to be top notch as always.

And if you are worried about gameplay, just look at the numerous demos all over the place. Gameplay isn't a problem. And if you don't like the updated gameplay, well then you've known you won't like the game for a while now.

Plus, its Executive Producer is Casey Hudson. He's been at the reins of the Mass Effect series for seven years, since the production of the first one. He's not about to let the final game of the trilogy be sub par. Also, this is the guy who was responsible for games like Kotor and Jade Empire. Just sayin'.

Of course this is all from my humble opinion.

No change in hell.
Not saying it won't be awesome (it probably will), but there's just too much expectations tacked onto it (somewhat lessened by the design choices in ME2).

I certainly know it will live up to my expectations, and most likely surpass them.
INFINITE LOOP

If X is a measure of your expectations, and Y is what you feel it will live up to, then by your statement

Y > X.

However, what you feel it will live up to is, by definition, your expectations, therefore

Y = X.

Therefore your expectations are an unsolvable quantity.

Before watching the Beta, I did not think it would live up to -my- expectations. After watching the Beta, I am VERY optimistic!

I think there is less chance of it living up to expectations than there was before multiplayer was announced.

Not that I'm not a fan of multiplayer, it's just that when they delayed the game, everyone assumed it was to improve the quality of the single player, which would have been AWESOME!

But instead? They were making a multiplayer component which they had denied in interviews. Great.

With all the disappointment from fanboys, this could drive them to focus more on the multiplayer to make it please everyone. If that's the case, I will be sad.

I will get Mass Effect 3, but I'm not holding out for anything spectacular at this stage. I loved Mass Effect 2 too much.

I have no idea, Mass Effect 3 isn't out yet.

That's seriously the only answer. The question these people are answering to are "What are your expectations of Mass Effect 3?"
